Climate change has become one of the main challenges - to find new greener and renewable alternatives for energy production
USA and EU have established ambitious targets for increasing the share of renewable energy in the transport sector, e.g. bioethanol from lignocelluloses
A major challenge is to improve the design of second generation (lignocellulose as feedstock) processes such that they become feasible alternative renewable energy resources…
Transfer of these processes to industrial scale is mainly empirical
Maybe inefficient and costly wrt time and resources consumption

• A number of routes to convert biomass to energy
• Some large-scale pilot plants as well as demo-plants are being built in Europe, USA, elsewhere
• Proven processing technology, now time for optimisation and cost reduction

Modelling approach
Experimental approach
Modelling all the way from an idea at lab scale to full-scale production
DPPB Semana: 6\Sesión: 1

Collect/ Analyze (e.g. data, models)
Identify
(e.g. Enzymatic Kinetics)
Innovate, design and simulate
(Integrated process models)
Validate
(pilot lab data)
Phase 1
Phase 2
Identify dynamic models for constituent unit processes...sometimes difficult due to the lack of data.
Formulate a plant-wide model by linking together different unit models, and simulate different process configurations and validate on pilot plant data
