Tape measure
• It is used for measuring
accurately.
• A tape measure consists
of linear measure
markings in imperial and
metric units.
• Most tape measures are
made from metal or
plastic. The metallic
ribbon tape measure
retracts into the small
convenient storage.

Straight edge
For providing a straight

Cutting knife
• It is used for cutting boards.
• Often given the name
‘Stanley knife’ after a brand
that makes them.
• The blades are
retractable and can
be replaced when
worn.

Plasterboard saw
• Also known as a pad saw or drywall saw.
• This saw uses its larger teeth to eat away at the material.
• Commonly used to cut out for sockets, switches and lights.

Surform/Rasp
• This tool is used to smooth
rough edges.
• It can be used to trim a few
millimeters from a board
once it has been cut.

Hammer
• Traditionally, a plasterer would have a lath hammer. This was used to cut and fix wooden laths.
• It may be more common now to use a claw hammer.

Tin snips
• Tin snips are used to cut sheet metal and beading.
• They may also be called tin shears.

A hacksaw is used to cut sheet metal ribs and the nosing of beads.
