Mr. Waksman will afterwards give an addresson Antibiotics and Tuberculosis-a Microbiological Approach.Royal Medical Foundation of Epsom CollegeHenry Duncalfe annuities of E30 p.a. each for spinsters

in need of help will shortly be awarded by the council. Candi-dates must be daughters of registered medical practitionersand must have attained the age of 50. Pensions for

Society for Relief of Widows and Orphans of MedicalMen ’

The annual general meeting of the society was held onMay 21, with Dr. R. A. Young, the president, in the chair.The resignation of Dr. Blackett was received, and in appre-ciation of his services as secretary for over 40 years he waselected a vice-president. During 1946 E4950 was distributedto the 52 widows who are beneficiaries. The membership ofthe society is now 281, of whom 160 are life members and121 are ordinary members. Laboratory at 10, Chittaranjan Avenue, Calcutta, has beenconstituted as the Central Drugs Laboratory. Its functionswill include : (1) the analysis of samples submitted bycustoms collectors and courts of law, and (2) the granting ofcertificates of registration for patent and proprietary medicineswith undisclosed formulae. The Drugs Act and rules cameinto force on April 1, except the provisions for the registrationof patent and proprietary medicines, which are to take effecton April 1, 1948.British Empire Leprosy Relief Association

Dr. Gordon Ryrie has been appointed medical secretary ofthe association in succession to Dr. Ernest Muir who hasretired.

Dr. Ryrie, who graduated M.B. at the University of Edinburghin 1926, joined the Colonial Medical Service in Malaya two yearslater. He was appointed superintendent of Sungei Buloh LeperHospital in 1930, where he remained until the end of 1945. Duringthe Japanese occupation Dr. Ryrie organised his settlement as abase for aiding our troops, guiding them in the jungle and sendingfood and medical supplies. In January, 1944, the Japs becamesuspicious, and they put him in prison, later sending him to alabour camp where he remained until the liberation. Immediatelyafter VJ-day, though in poor health, he resumed his work at theSungei Buloh Hospital until the autumn of 1945 when he returned toEngland.
