caixa preta. O espao da exposio vira o espao da
projeo. O cinema instala-se no museu e as imagens
projetadas nesse ambiente sugerem modos originais

The place where lm-viewing experiences used to
take place is increasingly shiting rom movie theaters
to dierent acilities. This newound trend o showing
audiovisual works to the audience has been adopted by
museums, contemporary art galleries, and exhibition halls,
art shows and centers geared to media art. The traditional
so-called white cube has metamorphosed into a black
box. The space or displaying artworks has turned into a
screening space. Cinema sets oot in the museum, and
images shown in those settings suggest innovative ways to
articulate and understand the narratives proposed underthose circumstances. The exhibition site, ully occupied
by projection devices, sound and visual codes o moving
images as well as the inormation bits rom the narrative,
blends with the cinematic space and vice versa, while
all the overlapping o unctions gives way to a broader
understanding and denition o the traditional cinema.
Cinema Sim Narratives and Projections is not an
exhibition about cinema, but rather about the idea
and concept o cinema and how contemporary
artists imbue their works with creative and aesthetic
principles that hark back to the cinematic language
and its means o expression.

A mesma preocupao demonstra o crtico de arte Jean

espao de representao que transorma radicalmente as

The move rom one single screen

meant not only broadening visual

The same concern is shown by art critic Jean Cristophe

enunciate images.3

A mecnica, o som do aparelho e a
Line Describing a Cone (973), no qual a luz do projetor cria no
Em sua obra You and I, Horizontal III(2007),
a Cone.
Many o these characteristics can be ound in the set o
works o several artists included in Cinema Sim Narratives
and Projections. Those works show projection eatures
transorming the exhibition setting into space-time o
the exhibition; narrative elements also become evident
along the screening process itsel; and issues related to
attendance, ruition, and participation o the audience are
worthy o a deeper analysis when examining these works
where cinema and visual arts converge.
Visuality with a brushstroke o poetry
English artist Anthony McCall is one o the artists that best
represent this trend, as clearly shown in his series o works
entitledsolid light lms, where the light beam fowing rom
lm and video projectors composes an installation that
transmits a strong sensory appeal. This artist started this
work in early 970, creating lm-installations wherein the
6-mm projector was let apparent as an integral element o
the piece. The tangible elements o the common cinematic
notion were represented by the mechanical parts, the
sound equipment, and the light projected through the lens,
although, contrary to what happens in a movie theater,
the device remains exposed and integrated to the actual
moment o the screening, while the image shown presents
a visual and three-dimensional acet. His most amous work
dates back to that time and is called Line Describing a Cone
(973), where the light beam o a projector creates a cone-
shaped, 3-D, luminous beam in the dark room o exhibition.
Following the development o technology and the
remarkable improvement o image quality o video
projectors, McCall started to produce his solid light lmsusing digital medium. In his workYou and I, Horizontal III
(2007), the light beam o two video projectors creates
an abstract-shaped shat o light in the dark room. On
the screen placed in ront o the projectors, the image
is projected as a line making a drawing with a slow and
continuous motion that lasts about thirty minutes. In this
piece, the cinematic image is, above all, represented by the
immaterial shape o the objectperceived in the installation
through the light smoky atmosphere created in the
previous workthe procedure is the same one used in Line
Describing a Cone. The light beam foats in space as i it were

rontal.
espectador observa em Stunned Man (Trilogy o Failure/
At que, surpreendentemente, o
personagem passa a destruir o apartamento, quebrando
os mveis e demolindo as paredes.
Essa narrativa desdobra-se nos dois campos visuais
que esto diante do espectador, exibidos em duas
telas justapostas.
No lme percebemos
maneira incongruente. A complementaridade d-
emGoing Places Sitting Down (2004). Nesse trabalho, as
the projector. Free to walk around or inside such foating
shape, the viewer is physically inserted in the representation
expressed by the light beam o the projector.
Two screens placed side by side show the images o
a character in his apartment. This is what the viewer
sees in Stunned Man (Trilogy o Failure/Part II) (2004),
by Julian Roseeldt. The narrative begins by describing
the character in a prosaic scene in his apartment.
This situation, with very casual and commonplace
characteristics, depicts that character doing hishousework just like any other citizen. Surprisingly, he
suddenly starts destroying the apartment, breaking up
all the urniture, and making the walls collapse.
The narrative unolds in two visual elds placed in
ront o the viewer and projected on two overlapping
screens. One could say that Roseeldts lm has no
beginning, middle, or end like a traditional lm. It takes
place at the unolding o an ongoing time occurring
synchronically while the events are revealed on both
screens. One can see that the images in the lm reer to
the same situation lived by the character in that same
space but at dierent moments in time. The apparent
absence o synchrony between both moments shown
on the screens gives rise to an interesting dialectic
approach. While recalling the past in the quest to nd
any possible trace o its linearity, the viewer realizes
that it all reers to the same narrative arranged in an
inconsistent order, though. This is complemented by
the narrative time, which is built as both sequences
overlap in the screening room. The dynamics o the
meaning could be simplied i one could see the lm
on a single screen and ollow the events lived by the
character in a linear manner. Yet it is precisely this veryduplication o space that osters the dierentiated
arrangement o events and the overlapping o the
cinematic time, thus orcing the viewer to try to
understand why the character behaves with calm
normalcy at a certain moment o time and shows an
insane and surrealistic behavior at another.
The same procedure, that allows the projection to
create one single meaning to the video narrative, was also
exploited by Hiraki Sawa in Going Places Sitting Down (2004).
In this artwork, Sawas digital animations poetically glide
across the domestic setting o a typical British apartment.
The detail rames reveal the oneiric trotting o a wooden

No toa
espacial do enquadramento vrias narrativas distintas.
Lev
Manovich utiliza o termo spatial montage (montagem
temporal do cinema tradicional, a montagem espacial

horse amidst the urniture and objects scattered around
the house. Shown in a triptych projection, the images
complement each other in a peculiar associative game
at the resonance o a sound track redolent o music-box
melodies and childhood memories.
In Yong-seok Ohs works, on the other hand, the two
overlapping screens are placed at a ninety-degree angle
and their resulting complementarity helps to support the
deconstructed time perception o the image that creates
an animated mosaic o reality. However, much more can beound in Drama No. 3 (2004-2005).In addition to the double
projection, dozens o juxtapositions can be seen on the
same rame, which ultimately widens the meaning o the
image and ragments the notion o time and space o what
is being represented. Not surprisingly the artist decided to
use extensive landscapes in open scenes with extraordinary
depth. By treating these images as suraces, the artist
inserted several other rames on the preliminary one to
compose, just like in a painting by Picasso or a photograph
by David Hockney, the many unique and temporal nuances
captured through the use o the digital medium to depict
the reality. His lm compresses several dierent narratives in
a single spatial dimension o a rame.
In the other three works, the situation and conditions in
which the lms are exhibited dene the determining aspects
o the narrative structure, as well as how it is assimilated
and interpreted by the viewer. The artist paves the way or
the construction o the discourse through an associative
game o images and their meanings. On the other hand,
the juxtaposition o the images osters meanings and
combinations that occur at the viewers level. Unlike a lm
with classic narrative, where editing predetermines the
order o the shots and o the subordinated articulation
between them, this projection cinema requires acognitive remontage o the order in which sequences are
presented. Lev Manovich uses the term spatial montage
to classiy this type o narrative composition and points
out that, contrary to the temporal montage o traditional
lms, the spatial montage reorganizes the conventional
sequencing in a dierent order that only becomes
easible due to the space where that narrative is created.
Juxtapositionsper se do not result in the montage; rather,
they allow the lmmaker to build a logic that determines
which images will appear together and the type o
relationships they establish among themselves.4

Nessa interpretao

movimento. Zootrpio, praxinoscpio, cinetoscpio e

criados com esse intuito. Mais de 00 anos depois
The two works included in this exhibition 89 Seconds

Now Wait or Last Year, by Rachel Reupkeshown in a
single channel(one single projection screen) recreate
aspects related to the cinematic imaginary or the possibility
to create ctional representation through a narrative. It
is undoubtedly true that the lm 89 Seconds at Alczar
triggers an immediate empathy in the viewer and awakens
curiosity about the peculiar eatures o the moving image.
This is a scenic and moving perormance o the painting Las
Meninas by Velzquez. In this postmodern interpretation, the eect o the baroque plasticity o the painting is
experienced by the viewer when entering through the
our corners o the room where the amous Velzquezs
characters reign in splendor. Sussmans lm mirrors her wish
to virtually experience the 3-D dimension o the painting
and to oneirically disclose the secrets hidden behind
the shadows and the complex spatial game insinuated
pictorially in this amous painting.5
See the analysis made by Michel Foucault published inAs Palavras e asCoisas (Martins Fontes, 2007) on the paintings o Velzquez.
In the case o the artiicial landscapes created
by Rachel Reupke, the artist created an allegoric
vision o Beijing using digital image-composition
resources. Bizarre buildings occupy the urban space
contrasting with the low o traic showing cars and
bicycles and the natural behavior o pedestrians.
A more attentive glance captures vestiges o the
treatment and digitalization o the image, whose
color, texture, and motion were changed to a great
extent. Reupkes ilm takes us to uturistic scenery
heavily characterized by nostalgia, resembling thosepostcard iconography and advertisements with
ading hues rom the 950s.

The art o cinema was ounded by the eorts o many

poca do pr-cinema.
Elas so como
Alterando levemente a
digital, a artista anima o quadro e insere delicadamente

the creation o kinetic objects and devices that, in a
playul and almost parodic manner sweep one back

immediate question that comes to mind then is: in an
era deeply marked by the sweeping development o
inormation technologies and digital images, why are
artists interested in creating noisy rattletraps driven by
electric motors which project poor and uzzy images?
What is so surprising and unusual about the projection
objects and machines created by Milton Marques and
Peter Fischer?
Perhaps it is precisely the deployment o the hegemonic
paradigm o technology, that apparent simplication
o the way to produce motion combined with the
nave gesture o building a primitive image-generating
mechanism that lend those projection machines a
undamental meaning in the eyes o a viewer, utterly
contaminated by audiovisual inormation. They seem to
be a poetic metaphor or how important the cinema has
become in our culture. As i they were the actual proo
o what is still sublime in the experience o viewing a
moving image.
Held in a vertical position, a handheld DVD player shows
an image as i it were some sort o electronic picture
rame. The apparently static image o a child swinging
ace down rom a tree appears on the screen. A similar
situation can be seen on our other players, showing the
image o a young girl head-over-heels in a somersault, a
man jumping, one diving, and yet another one swimming.
In Frutos Estranhos (2006), Rosngela Renn challenges
the viewer to look attentively at something that, at rst,
is not there. By slightly changing the composition o the
scene using digital editing eatures, the artist animates therame and gently inserts the cinematic temporality on the
photographic matrix that originated those images. This
semiotic transition rom one status to another creates the
aesthetic dimension o the image through the exchange
o ideas between what is static and what is contaminated
by the impression o motion.
The last work made by French artist and theoretician
Thierry Kuntzel beore his death in 2007, the
installation La Peau (2007), shows on a twenty-
one-square-meter screen the image o the human
skin. Captured in great detail by hundreds o
photographs, the skin is shown in a nonstop

humana. Registrada em detalhe por centenas
de otograias, a pele exibida numa seqncia
contnua de aproximadamente 40 minutos, com
suas nuanas de textura, cor e rugosidade. O ilme
As otograias
lentamente a longa tira otogrica.
Como uma extensa paisagem que se prolonga
horizontalmente, o ilme est ocado na dimenso
sica do corpo e de sua epiderme. Mas a sua
enunciao por meio dessa impressionante
visualidade provocada pela nitidez e pela escala
ampliicada da imagem sugere um olhar que
extrapola a materialidade da imagem e projeta o
linguagem, tecnologia e produo coletiva, ele entra
artistas contemporneos6.

sequence lasting approximately orty minutes with
its dierent nuances in color, roughness, and texture.
For the projection, Kuntzels ilm uses a special
device that permits the uninterrupted screening
o a photographic ilm similar to a 70-mm wide x
5-m long slide or transparency. The photographs
careully merged through computer sotware were
edited in a sequence and associated to each other.
The synthesized image o the skin is projected by
this device that slowly sets the long photographic
strip in motion.
Like a wide landscape extending horizontally, the
ilm ocuses on the physical dimension o the body
and its epidermis. Its expressiveness, however, by
means o this impressive visuality provoked by
the sharpness and ampliied scale o the image,
suggests a look that goes beyond the material
nature o the image and takes the viewer to
exercise his subjective perception.
I cinema was the art o the 20th century because
it blended language, technology, and collective
production, it now enters the new millennium acing
the challenge o consolidating the multiplication
o its representation means. As Augustin Prez
Rubio states, the time has come or cinema to
have its own space inside the museum, to analyze
both the importance o such language in relation
to some movements and styles, and the need to
have contemporary artists incorporating cinematic
processes into their art.6

Now Wait or LastYearrefects a ascination with science ction and the inherentproblem o visualizing the uture.
Shot in Beijing in 2006, the city was in the throws o a construction boom. Thousandso developershoardings intruded on the c ity streets, each displaying an architectsvisualization o what was to come, in a digital-sot stylea visual overlay o proposedonto existent that seemed to compress time and give the impression that tomorrowmight actually be running con currently with today.
The video presents six buildings in single-shot xed rames, a hybrid o architectsprojection and corporate video. Photographic in nature, but with visiblepostproduction, the images, both monumental and unreal, resist being located in aspecic time or reality, so prompting the question whether these buildings actuallyexist in present-day Beijing, are plans or uture developments, or sheer antasy. Thetitle is borrowed rom Philip K. Dick.

Now Wait or Last Year refete o ascnio pela co cientca e o problema inerente devisualizar o uturo.

Oh Yong-seok Ohs Drama is a synthesis o dierent times and
spaces. Even though it looks like a natural, single -rame scene,it is the combination o many views rom various lms. It is alsoa mixture o lm clips and real scenes.By capturing scenes rom lms, he mixes given articial realitieso the lm with a real scene he records by himsel. Eventually, this spectacle and eccentric scene looks as i it is a stageset o a lm or a play in a theater. This new stage set scenecreates and reconstructs temporality within only one space bycombining dierent time ragments.
In a broader sense, his creation o dierent times in one singlespace is the exposure o the dual reality (physical reality andvirtual reality) in our times, and a hyperdesign o dierenttime-based space. Sometimes his scenes are lled with stillphotography images along with moving images, to create yetanother mixed reality. This unusual creation o time and spacemakes viewers ponder notions o time even in one commonspace. Drama oers an imaginative journey rom a amiliar timezone into a totally new one.
