You already know that the infinitive forms of Spanish
verbs always end in –ar, -er, or -ir
Hablar Comer Escribir
4
Every verb has 2 parts:
Hablar = habl- + AREnseñar = enseñ- + AREstudiar = estudi- + ARNecesitar = necesit- + AR Comer = com- + ERBeber = beb- + EREscribir = escrib- + IRCompartir = compart- + IR
STEM + ENDING
5
Hablar = habl- + AREnseñar = enseñ- + AREstudiar = estudi- + ARNecesitar = necesit- + AR Comer = com- + ERBeber = beb- + EREscribir = escrib- + IRCompartir = compart- + IR
STEM + ENDING
-You WANT to use verbs in ways other than in the infinitive form.
-To do this, you DROP the –ar, -er, or –ir ending and make changes.
-The stem carries the basic meaning while the ending tells “who(subject)” and “when(tense).”

Present-tense verbs in Spanish are actions indicating what is happening “now, in the present.”
Each simple expression in Spanish mayconvey two similar ideas in English:

The verb endings ALWAYS indicate WHO is doing the action. They tell WHO is speaking. Because of this, you can often use the verb WITHOUT a subject.
¿Estudias español?Necesitamos una pluma.Comes el almuerzoEscribís cuentos.
Subject pronouns are often used for emphasis or clarification.
Ella habla inglés pero él habla español.Ellas beben Mt. Dew pero ellos beben Pepsi
