OTHER TOOLS
Even though the actual printing process only requires a few basic tools and
materials, screenprinting is such a diverse and versatile technique that you
will want to find different tools to do different, more ambitious jobs.
Last but not least, screenprinting makes use of chemicals, the majority of which are waterbased
are waterbased. It is important to use protection, especially in the form of face masks and gloves.
Throughout the book we'll go back to these icons so you can gather all
the tools needed for any particular operation before you start.

FILM POSITIVESFor screenprinting, all the parts that need to be printed will have to be opaque.
The easiest way to transfer a design onto the screen is to print (or draw directly) onto a transparent medium.
You will have to use different techniques depending on your experience and intentions.
FILM
Standard household printers can print on Mylar, acetate or vellum paper. The latter is the least expensive. Remember to make sure it is perfectly clean and clear.
SOFTWARE
You will need image-editing software such as Adobe® Photoshop® and Illustrator® to prep your image for print. Open source alternatives out there include Gimp® and Inkscape®.
MARKERS
If you want to draw your design onto your film positive directly, you’ll need black markers. Make sure they will be permanent on the transparency you plan to use.
CUTTER
If you want to create your design using opaque shapes applied directly onto the screen, i.e. a hand-cut positive, you will need a very sharp cutter.
TAPE
Clear tape is needed to hold your transparency in place when drawing the film positive by hand.
hALfTONEs
halftone is a reprographic technique si-
mulating a tone or gradient. It works by
converting the image into dots, whch vary
in both size and spacing. The dots are hard
to see with the naked eye, but can be dis-
cerned through a magnifying glass.

REGISTERING THE DESIGN
Lower the screen onto the
t-shirt to determine placement.
A rule of thumb is to have
the top of the design
starting about 2-2 1/2" (5-
8cm) under the collar.
Once you have registered
your design, it’s time for the
squeegee and the paint.
tip: ‚Make sure you have enough space when printing: having to relocate your setup will inevitably get you into trouble.
SPRAY ADHESIVE
Spray adhesive is an adherent
delivered in droplet form. This
is easier and neater to apply
to fabrics than glue, and can
be removed by laundering or
dry cleaning. Unfortunately, it
has toxic fumes and must be
used in a well-ventilated space.
Spray the glue onto the pallet
from about 20cm. Use a
small amount, but cover the
entire width of the t-shirt.
Glue should be sprayed
on the separator plastic.
This is used to prevent the
color seeping through to
the back of the shirt.
Stretch the fabric as much as
possible over the separator
and place it on the pallet.
tip: ‚Tuck the sleeves under the pallet to make sure they don't get in the way when you're printing.

Base -Vwww.base-v.org
An artist group based in São Paulo, Brazil. Set up by Danilo Oliveira, David Magila and Zansky, the collective works in a variety of media, from handmade publications to installations, and is famous for mixing techniques and materials. The group values the collective above the individual, as a means of creating new channels of artistic commu-nication. Base-V’s aim is to influence the process by which visual arts are brought into the public sphere, and thereby make art more accessible and democratic. Focused on collective action, the group works in collaboration with artists from around the world, as well as for brands, publishers and institutions that are interested in adding artistic language to their products and marketing strategies. How did the Base-V Box project develop? Was it a case of careful parenting, or of a fun idea between friends that took on a life of its own?
Base-V Box was born when Danilo was studying at UNESP. He was looking at artist’s monographs, thinking about formats and ways to print and to create new forms of publications. One day he started to screenprint, experimenting on 21x21cm scrap paper, using all the screens that we had, printing at random. Any new screen laying around was burned during this “experimental period”. We were limited to what we had, including inks. The production went on to become a wooden box full of art, and so BASE-V BOX was born. People enjoyed the idea and we decided to turn BASE-V BOX into a collaborative publication. It’s a free and simple idea which was developed as a col-lective project, as a way to embrace and publish artists from all around the world.
What are the qualities of screenprinting which make it the best medium for this project? One of the great qualities of screenprinting is that it’s the only process which enables you to print on dark supports, or with white ink. We can print on dark papers with bright ink colors. It’s fantas-tic! You can think in reverse (dark before bright) and it’s a challenge for us to work with colors. Another reason is that screenprinting needs less infrastructure than other printing methods. You can print in a small place with only a table and a place to dry the prints: the screens can be burned elsewhere. Besides, in screenprinting the idea of ‘an original’ simply doesn’t exist - every print is an original.

Wärme—Warmth
Waesche—Laundry
Chris had a brief encounter with screenprinting in her early teenage years, and rediscovered the technique at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg and at ENSAD in Paris, where she studied illustration. Taking full advantage of a residency program in Hamburg, she spent time experimenting in the screenprint workshop. Her style relies largely on using several semitransparent inks to achieve color effects. In a way, it reflects her painting technique, which is also characterized by superimposing color layers. Chris considers screenprinting a way of replicating her works while keep-ing an original feel. Small mistakes and irregularities make for “duplicated originals”, each different from the other.
Zimmernachweis (Room Service)A follow up series of five 42 x 59.4 cm handpulled screenprints on paper, four or five colors, about Chris’ family farm. The individual rooms in the house used to have specific names such as “Milchkammer” (milk room), “Bügelzimmer” (iron-ing room) or “Neue Stube” (new lounge). The text in the drawing represents fragments of memories about the rooms.

Ellen Wagnerwww.thebambamcollective.blogspot.com
Ellen was born in Soltau, a small village in Germany. She describes herself as a late bloom-er. After studying art history in Berlin and Frankfurt, she moved on from theory to prac-tice. Initially, Ellen focused on illustration, but soon discovered a passion for silkscreen. After just one workshop she was hooked. Each print represents a new and surprising way to experiment. All the colors are to be found in Ellen’s palette, and each one creates a spe-cial charm. Relying more on impact than on detail, she relies on a rough and quick printing style, welcoming imperfections and (un)intentional mistakes in the final piece. Her motto: “print now riot later”.

¿O no? C.P.P.V.

A nosotros y a

do”.

innovadoras y visualmente sorprendentes motocicletas

tematica dell’emergente artista
belga hans op de beeck.
la Xavier hufkens gallery di Brux-
elles espone un suo studio sugli
oggetti di ogni giorno.
negli anni la galleria Xavier hufkens,
che segue artisti di fama quali cy
twombly, frank stella e donald
Judd, ha sempre promosso i giovani
talenti, come fa ora con la rassegna
«family scenes and scenery».
op de beeck, 37 anni, è noto per
le grandi installazioni, per i vid-
eo, le fotografie e lo stage de-
sign. tanti suoi lavori iniziano con
un’immagine mentale, un ricordo
dell’infanzia, una scena legata al pas-
sato. Anche in quest’esposizione,
che chiuderà il 16 dicembre, in pri-
mo piano ci sono le sue alienazio-
ni e le assurdità dell’esistenza post-
moderna.
tutto accade negli spazi interni, in
un contesto domestico, intorno alla
famiglia. Quali informazioni si pos-
sono ricavare guardando una tavola
da pranzo abbandonata? in che
modo un oggetto d’uso quotidia-
no diventa il silenzioso testimone
di drammi privati?
con i suoi lavori, op de beeck si in-
terroga sul rapporto tra le per-
sone e le abitazioni: tutti noi pro-
gettiamo la nostra identità, le nostre
illusioni, i nostri sogni attraverso

nuovissimo carnival center for
the performing arts. il doppio au-
ditorium disegnato dall’architetto
argentino cesar Pelli, già vincitore
del premio Pritzker, è appena
stato inaugurato con tre grandi
concerti.
mente meno apprezzate rispetto
alle spiagge di south Beach.
«sembrano due navi da crociera
che si incrociano in mare», dice
il presidente del carnival center,
michael hardy, a proposito del-
la forma dei due edifici realizzati
dall’architetto Pelli. uno sarà ded-
icato all’opera e al balletto; l’altro,
che ha una sofisticata acustica
regolabile, ospiterà i concerti di
quattro orchestre in residence (tra
cui la prestigiosa cleveland or-
chestra) e molti eventi pop.
realizzato a tempo di record con
una spesa di 461 milioni di dol-
lari, il carnival «è il più grande
complesso per le performing arts
aperto negli usa dagli anni settan-
ta», sottolinea hardy, mostrando le
opere d’arte commissionate per
l’edificio soprattutto ad autori su-
damericani. l’artista josé bedia ha
realizzato suggestivi pavimenti in-
tarsiati e vetrate d’ispirazione art
déco, la scultrice Anna valentina
murch, ricalcando i giochi d’acqua
