Since the beginning, cruises have beensynonym with luxury and relaxation. TheRomans used to go on leisure trips through theMediterranean Sea, and well-off Dutchmerchants from the XVI century, would cruisethe North Sea.
When one think about releasing tensions, itis superb to picture oneself onboard of oneof these ocean colossi, going from beach tobeach, from port to port holding caipirinhas
and so, assisted by a crew that will keep one
away from boredom, and by always ready
cooks who will fill stomachs and hearts with
the «all inclusive» service.
Destinations abound, and way to reachthem will depend on personal choices and
budgets. By bus, train, car, ship, or plane,
whatever the chosen trip might be, it will
mean the beginning of the upcoming summer.
Different options within our country have
blossomed during this spring: warm beaches,
dreamful Patagonian provinces, beautifulmountain landscapes, Litoral places, and
northern destinations inviting to travel the
Argentine roads.
According to data released by the
Argentine Ministry of Tourism, 994.241
travelers had toured Argentina during the last
long holiday, exhibiting an increase of 16%
in comparison with the figure reached thesame period of time last year.
To interpret the previously said as an
encouraging overview, we should also
consider the variation in accommodations and
rentals´ figures in the different destinations, as
well as the cost of life for an average family
in the vacation place they have picked.
Within the country and around the world, with or without stops, places to visit grow and
grow. There are varied options however; the
common thing among them is always the same:
fun and relaxation, very well deserved
indeed .

bodega museo La Falda. El
emprendimiento data de 1895 y fue
obra del alemán Bernardo Herzig. Es el
único museo del vino de nuestro país.
En General Roca hay una bodega de
pioneros: la que fundara en 1909 el in-
geniero Humberto Canale y que hoy es
manejada por la cuarta generación de
descendientes.
roquense.
Delicioso recorrido:

sidra, conservas, dulces, mermeladas y jaleas.

AROMAS AND TASTES
The Alto Valle of Rio Negro dazzles with its beauty
and extension inviting the traveler to a journey through
a unique natural setting where it is possible to taste
delicious apples, pears and excellent wines.
If there is something that sets Rio Negro apart is the
variety of landscapes and alternatives offered to
visitors throughout the year. Lakes, mountains and
forests stand out to the west, and beautiful costs and
cliffs to the east.
However, there is an area characterized by the
magnificence of the green pallet of the cultivated fields
and blooming farms: the Alto Valle of Rio Negro, a
world of fertility, colonization stories and ancestors’
memories. The wine, apple and pear tours were
delineated upon this geography, which currently attracts
many tourists eager to enjoy the tastes and scents
offered by this route.
Nestled in a privileged place, it gathers a great
number of visitors who, on their way to the Andean
region, can’t help stopping by to admire this marvelous
natural scenery.
There is no doubt that this is an extensive area: the
region of the Rio Negro valleys has a cultivated area
under irrigation that covers 86,000 hectares,
approximately 400km long, and 10km in its widest
part.
The colonist started to settle in this area at the time of
the arrival of the railroad in 1899, and its consolidation
occurred after the construction of the Ballester Dam in
1928, which ensured the irrigation.
The Alto Valle region extends between Chinchinales
and Cipolletti, and comprises ten cities concentrating the
fruit and horticulture activity par excellence.
Río Negro is the first seed-bearing-fruit producer
and exporter of the country, and its apples are a
synonym with worldwide excellence and an
unquestionable symbol of this region.
Wines with history
The wine tour allows the tourist to enter into the
refined world of wines and champagnes, and into the
typical varieties offered by this region, with
extraordinary tastes and scents. There are traditional
and boutique wineries that serve as testimony of the
productive history of the towns of the area.
In the Alto Valle of Rio Negro, the warm and dry
summer helps to obtain grape musts with a higher
acidity and a less sugar content than the one produced
in other regions. The most important varieties of the
area, apart from the Cabernet Sauvignon, are Semillon
that produces dry and honeyed wines; Pinot Noir,
typical of cool climate; and Merlot, either the young or
the fruity type, or the one with oak essence.
The wine history of the region started more than a
century ago and nowadays, it can be experienced at
La Falda Winery Museum, located in Cipolletti, the only
wine museum of the country. This endeavor
dates from 1895 as an initiative of the
German Bernardo Herzig.
In the city of General Roca there is a
winery of pioneers: the winery founded in
1909 by the engineer Humberto Canale,
which today is currently managed by the
fourth generation of descendants. The

Canale wineries and vineyards are emblematic in the
region and cover 500 hectares, 8 km far from the city’s
downtown.
Delightful circuit: the apple and pear Route
Thinking about Rio Negro means to think about
apples of excellence. Either red or green, juicy and
shiny, the apple cultivation is not developed in the whole
province. The privileged place for this purpose is the
Alto Valle, which contributes with the 70 per cent of the
pear and apple production of Argentina. This is due to
the characteristics of the regional ecosystem, which is
almost globally unique for the production of these two
kinds of fruits: particularly, for the mild and relatively
dry climate that avoids the proliferation of fungi
diseases.
Peaches, nectarines, nuts and grapes are also
cultivated in the region.
Regarding the apples, apart from fresh fruit, part of
its production is used for the elaboration of juices, cider,
preserves, sweets, marmalades and jams.
Some farms offer the tour to the production facility,
the possibility of participating of the production
process, tasting the fresh fruit directly at the foot of the
tree, and learning about the delicate pruning and
maintenance processes to get the best fruit.
It is also possible to visit the packaging facilities and
juice fabrication plants so as to get familiar with the
industrial process related to pears and apples. Doing
this tour during the harvest or the plantation season is a
dazzling feast for the sense, due to the colors of the
flowers and the scent of the recently harvested fruits.
The National Apple and Pear Fests, during summer,
would be a good opportunity to prepare the trip to the
Rio Negro valley, which also include the election of the
queen and a number of festive activities so as to relive
the ancestors’ ritual to celebrate the fruits of the earth.

dad súper importante», remarca Noelia Schulz, asis-

caciones./ Both day and night, cruises offer tourists
magnificent onboard amenities.
do.

Cruise season
Contrary to popular belief, cruise lines offer
budget-friendly options. Rates are about U$S
310 and U$S 2000 depending on the departing
date, number of nights and chosen itinerary.
«Argentines are beginning to discover cruises as a
guaranteed high-level holiday alternative at a
very reasonable price. In South America, only few
places can offer the kind of services cruises
render», explains Verónica Chancalay, Marketing
Coordinator of MSC Cruceros.
Competitive rates, in addition to quality
onboard amenities, combine to make these ships
an interesting holiday proposal. «First of all, we
should describe cruises as destinations in
themselves. Many couples come with the idea of a
romantic trip and get excited after finding they
can get up to 25 % discount if it is booked
beforehand», states Federico Ceci, Account
Executive of SB Viajes.
In order to win more clients,
companies bring in promotions
targeted to different sectors:
couples, just-married, and
friends. All you have to do is
go to a travel agent and ask
about current promotions. For
instance, families have very
convenient rates which include
one or even two free-of-
charge children when sharing
the stateroom with two adults.
Additionally, children have a
variety of onboard activities
during the trip», Ceci adds.

USEFUL DATA
How to book a cruise
Cruise lines have all the useful data posted on websites which include departing
dates, itineraries, promotions, and ticket purchase. Another way is booking them
through a travel agent.
What is the Online Check-in?
It is a service given by cruise lines which allows guests to fill out departure
forms from their houses so as to have all the necessary documents ready before
getting to the passengers terminal, that way, they’ll only have to deal with the
luggage upon arrival.
What documents will I need?
Each passenger will have to bring the ticket together with the identification
and passport, or all the necessary travel documents requested by the destination
countries.
How much luggage should I bring?
One suitcase per person is recommended. Onboard services include sheets,
bath and pool towels; so packing sport outfits, coat, evening garments, and of
course, bathing suit will be enough.
Do I need money onboard?
In most cruises, passengers make a deposit or give their credit card information
before starting the trip, in exchange, they will be provided with a card in which to
charge all the additional onboard expenditures, and bar or boutique purchases. That
way, there will be no need to bring extra money.
Where is the Buenos Aires Terminal?
Cruises depart from and arrive at Terminal 3, Benito Quinquela Martín, of
Buenos Aires, sited in the junction of S. Castillo and de los Inmigrantes avenues.
Is it allowed to get off at a port of call?
Yes, it is. Passengers may visit the different cruise destinations, and even
book an excursion.
What happens if it rains during the trip?
In case of bad weather conditions, it is possible to use the ship´s facilities:
bars, game rooms, library, gym and shops. Picking a vacation cruise is a good choice
for, in spite of the weather, they keep being perfect.
...
Currently, the market offers trips set sailing from
different Argentine ports heading to national and
international destinations, which may last few days or
several weeks, such the case of traveling to the
Mediterranean Sea or Northern Europe.
The Benito Quinquela Martín Terminal located at the
Buenos Aires city port is expecting about 329.000
passengers this up-and-coming 2010/2011 season.
«We always try to put an emphasis on an
additional and important detail, departing from
Buenos Aires is highly convenient», remarks Noelia
Schulz, Costa Crucero´s Marketing Assistant. Ships
departing from said port head to destinations such
as Punta del Este, Uruguay, and numerous Brazilian
cities». Costa group informed that its summer schedu-
le has raised 70 % within the Buenos Aires province.
«This year, additionally, we´ll introduce the biggest
vessel in the pier (3470 passengers and 1027 crew
members) which boasts from a virtual game area for
children to a huge water slide «, Schulz remarks.
Trip to the argentine south
According to data recently released by the Ente de
Turismo del Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires,
Antarctica, Puerto Madryn, Puerto Deseado and Islas
Malvinas are among the prime local destinations.
Patagonia tours depart from the Ushuaia port,
Tierra del Fuego province, dazzling with its
magnificent sceneries: glaciers, snow-capped
mountains and large forests.
In summertime, the Peninsula Antarctica’s cold
weather, typical of the coast, makes tourists walk
through the ship’s bridges wearing appropriate
garments as it can reach temperatures from 8°C to
18° C during the day, and 6°C to 10°C at night.

ensaladas, papas asadas, variedad de postres y be-

MEALS IN A COUNTRY STYLE
Tomás Jofré
A name with history
The village was legally called
Jorge Born, who found it in
1902 after the real state
company La Franco-Argentina
sold the land. However, it is
popularly referred to as To-
más Jofré, the same name
held by its abandoned railway
station, paying homage to a
local leader, a lawyer who
wrote the farm workers´
statute.
...
Country roads, brick shops, andan old railway station where thetrain used to pass, seem to indicatethat time stopped decades ago.Illusion renews at every step withcharming aged constructions, lowhouses, and thick groves that makeTomás Jofre an ideal place forfamily recreation.
People walk at a strolling pace, and local residents soon welcomeeveryone. The village, scarcelycomposed of 20 blocks and 300inhabitants, is more alive than everdue to the vast offer of countryrestaurants already known amongconnoisseurs.
According to the story, everythingis attributable to Don Domingo Pedro
Silvano who, in 1924, opened ashop where salami and ravioli, both
elaborated by his wife EnriquetaGatti, were the house´s specialties.
Later came the dances and socialmeetings and in 1963 this first
village´s eatery was officiallyinaugurated. Simple as that, hardly
realizing about it, Don Silvano andhis family began what today is
considered one of the first countryculinary Meccas of Argentina.
Pleasant to palate
The weekend arrives together with
a great wave of diners willing tosample the specialties offered by 15
eateries clumped in few streets. Thearoma in the air, typical of a good
«asado» in the open, is a trueprelude of what is coming.
The menu has a fixed price, between 60 and 80 ARS, and
includes drinks and local desserts.Lunch begins with the traditional
«picada» (nibbles) served on awooden plate consisting of cured
meat, delicious country bread, andsalami from the nearby city of
Mercedes. The treat continues withknife-cut spaghettis and ricotta or
vegetable ravioli with your choiceof home-made sauces; finally and
becoming the most praised ones, theicing on the cake are the best pieces
of meat, pork, and ribs al asador1.
Where to eat
The number of proposals for all
tastes is varied, from old andtraditional eateries to modern

the bustling city.Among the oldest and most
famous ones in town, we canmention «Don Silvano» which still

«La Casona de Jofré» well knownfor the asado a la cruz and home-

Saturday of each month in anambience honoring its name; and La
Cabaña started as a tea house, turning presently to the culinary field

At «El Mangrullo de la Chichita»,the all-inclusive modality begins with
a country platter of delicatessen andempanadas2, home-made pasta,
asado, salads, grilled potatoes, anda variety of desserts and drinks.
If the idea is to spend the nightthere, the hotel and restaurant «Cua-

The four rooms are exquisitelydecorated and rates include
breakfast and a meal. However, ifyou are looking for wellness and
spa, «Los Cuatro Amaneceres» sitedin an old 30-hectare ranch about
800 meters from the village, boastsfirst-level accommodations and
diverse programs for body and mindrelaxation.
Must-visits
But Tomás Jofré is much more than
a memorable meal. Sitting under
centuries-old trees after lunch, ridingponies, bikes or horses are among
the activities to spend the rest of theday.
Shopping fans can visit the fairthat takes places on Sundays and
holidays at the «Don Domingo Pedro
Silvano» main square. Artisan and
vendor stalks «are a classic in town»,comments Carlos while he enwraps
an old sifón3 for an antiques-enthusiast lady. «We receive visitors
from everywhere, and the reason, Ithink, is because here they eat well,
walk around, and relax», statesMónica who sales country cookies
prepared in the horno4 she has athome.
Continuing with the «shoppingmatter», a few meters from the
square, the country store «La Cueva»is worth visiting not only for the
quality of the regional delicacies itsells but also for the kindness shown
by its owner Don Lalo Puricelli. Hisattitude of service is remarkable and
when he is asked what he would you
recommend, his answer is
«specialties abound but, salami,longaniza5 and pork loins are the
best».He is kind and gentle, his words
reflect the pride of being part of atown which, in his opinion, «should
be included in the Guinness WorldRecords due to the great number of
restaurants despite the little numberof people».
Those few people Lalo refers toare, in the end, the living memory of
a village that has survived an utterlysolitude. Privatizations carried out in
the 90´s left them without therailway; still, the innovative capacity
led them to profit from the mainvirtues the place offered, turning the
village into a culinary Mecca which, undoubtedly, will never be forgotten
again .

turismo AVENTURA ...

demandan.
Entonces, sólo resta animarse a emprender
tir .

Following the Libertador´s trace
HORSEBACK RIDING JOURNEY THROUGH THE ANDES
Riding the same path as José de San Martín´s in January 1817 is a unique experience. With the
mountains as main witnesses, more than one traveler is seduced by the expedition through the
Andean Range.
We are familiar with the story since we are
children. Elementary school teaches about San
Martín and the importance he has, not only for
Argentina but also for Chile and Peru where he led
the successful struggle for the independence of these
countries. Surely, we must have imagined many times
about that heroic Andean crossing. Now it is possible
to revive it since, setting out from Mendoza, you can
travel the same path as the Libertador de América´s
in January 1817.
The journey promises a singular and indescribable
magic. Horse rides take you to remote and isolated
places almost impossible to reach in some other way.
Breathtaking sceneries are part of the view, and the
connection between you and the animal is amazing.
No special training is required. «The major
obstacle is the mountain range, not the horses; you
do not need to know how to ride or have any prior
horseback knowledge», states Cinthia Angileri,
Trekking-Travel´s manager, one of the companies
that offers the expedition.
However, there are some limitations. «Due to the
altitude we reach, there are some restrictions as
regards age: 12 years old is the
minimum accepted and 65 the
maximum», she specifies.
Apart from that, the important thing
is the adventurous spirit and be
eager to have fun despite the
eventualities which may come up. The
Andean range has a changing
weather and both, the wind and the
cold are usually hard.
Near the clouds
Excursions last 4 to 10 days, set out
from the province of Mendoza, reach
the Chilean border, and return to the
starting point. Some expeditions cross
the Chilean border returning by bus.
«Horse ridding crossings last a
maximum of ten days, eight of which
are on horseback; however, shorter
excursions are also available», explained the
Trekking-Travel´s representative.
Whatever the chosen itinerary might be, the
experience is enriching. Man becomes just a tiny spot
in such great scenery. Hares and guanacos witness
the passing of the horses, while chañares, romerillos,
montenegros and piquillines seek shelter in their
thorns. Such unequal Andean Range’s postcard turns
into a wonderful horseback riding experience with a
great number of natural ingredients.
The enchanting mountains combine with a true
tasting invitation every stop offers where goat, and
lamb, among other exquisite dishes, can be sampled
in a superb scenery.
Escorted and warm
It is a highly irregular terrain presenting ravines or
stream crossings, as well as climbs through narrowed
steep paths. In short time, huge mountains, rocks,
Pampas grass, and cliffs will be in sight.
But leave worries aside! Horse ridings are always
escorted by experienced guides who know perfectly
well every corner of the mountain range and lead

travelers through the different paths. «The team of

Slopes seem endless, the climb up extends and
everything behind becomes infinitely smaller. Reaching
the top is the best gift after traveling such strenuous
road. From there, you can admire the mountain edges
disappear in a horizon merged with the sky.
The ones interested in going on this adventure, should
keep in mind that due to the weather conditions, the
horse riding crossings are only available from January
to mid-March.
The experience of such exciting and daring journey
at more than 3000 meters above sea level, is a
singular tourist proposal which has become a classic in
summertime and which is only cancelled when the
weather conditions of the upper mountain and the
remote places it reaches, indicate so.
Therefore, you only have to encourage yourself to
embark on such amazing riding with the endless view
of the Andean range in the background, and the
satisfaction of having gone through an experience
which, undoubtedly, you´ll want to repeat .

TEATRO COLÓNConsiderado uno de los
principales teatros líricos del
mundo, el Colón deslumbra a los
amantes de la música, atrae a
prestigiosos artistas y propone
to, grandeza y principalmente or-
plendor.
MÁS VIVO QUE NUNCA
La reapertura se celebró con una
función de gala la noche del 24 de
mayo pasado, en el marco del fes-

para presenciar en «El lago de los
cisnes» y «La Bohème», la recupe-

reconocidos internacionalmente, no
sólo por su tamaño e inigualable
acústica, sino también por su tra-

Desde la velada inaugural en
1908 con «Aida», de Giuseppe

ballet y la lírica formaron parte del
asombroso historial del Teatro Co-

En el escenario dejaron su impron-

Luciano Pavarotti, para mencionar
algunos. Mientras que en la danza
se destacaron figuras como Rudolf
Nureyev, Alicia Alonso, Maia
Plissetskaya, Paloma Herrera, Julio
Bocca y Maximiliano Guerra.
Pero el legado del teatro no ter-
mina ahí. Hace ya 50 años funciona
el Instituto Superior de Arte que con-
tinúa formando artistas del máxi-
mo nivel, dando la posibilidad a los
alumnos de realizar prácticas den-
tro de distintas actividades en el
Teatro Colón.
A su vez, se mantienen cuerpos
estables artísticos, como la orques-

figurantes. Los trabajadores de los
talleres de sastrería, zapatería,
utilería, tapicería, vestuario y ma-

The re-opening was celebrated
with a gala concert on the eve of
May 24th, 2010 launched during
the Bicentenary festivities which
was attended by famous
personalities, who participated
through the «Swan Lake» and «La
bohème», of the recovery of one
of the world’s most famous opera
houses, not only for its magnitude
and incomparable acoustics, but
also for its tradition.
Since the first performance in
1908 of Giuseppe Verdi´s
«Aida», the Colón Theatre hosted
the greatest lyric and ballet
artists who became part of its
amazing history, granting
prestige, recognition and a unique
cultural prominence.
Composers like Richard Strauss
and Arthur Honegger, conductors
like Arturo Toscanini, and opera
stars such as Enrico Caruso, Plácido
Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano
Pavarotti, among others, left their
stamp on the stage; and, as
regards ballet dancers, so did
artists such as Rudolf Nureyev, Alicia
Alonso, Maia Plissetskaya, Paloma
Herrera, Julio Bocca and
Maximiliano Guerra.
However, the legacy of the theater
does not finish there. Since 50 years
ago, the Instituto Superior the Artes
(The Superior Institute of Art) keeps
on developing high level artists,
giving students the chance to
practice activities within the different
areas of the Colón Theatre.
Apart from that, the theatre has
its permanent troupes as the
orchestra, the choir, the ballet and
artists.
Workers and designers of tailor,
shoes’, utility, tapestry, costume and
make up workshops, among
others, complete the staff. All
the elements required for the
plays are manufactured in the
basement along with the entire
performances´ production.
On the other hand, guided
tours for visitors are a pending
issue, since they were cancelled
due to the undergoing
refurbishment process. However,
they are expected to be
resumed with their usual tour
along the main entrance, the
performance room, the golden
room, the busts’ gallery, the
museum and the basements, for
a reasonable price .

- ¿A qué bailarines admiras?

Paloma
«I´ll go on dancing
while I feel it»
Herrera...
Paloma poses for pictures showing
just a little of her exquisite dancing
movements. Her hands move in light
and sweet rhythm, and her face
shows pure feelings.
As she is used to interviews, she
handles it so naturally that is easy to
follow her. Delicate, kind, calm and
self-confident, so is Paloma: a
pleasure to admire her in real life
and on the stage.
Just about 20 years of being part
of the American Ballet Theatre (ABT)
of New York, this talented Argentine
dancer returns to our country to
perform Le Corsaire next October,
31 at the Teatro Colón, place which
was her first love.
- What does it mean to you to
dance again at the Colón which was
like your first ballet school?
It´s a pleasure dancing here, I
have the greatest memories. I really
enjoyed the time there, and still
keep in touch with the rest of the
company and the theatre. I feel at
ease and love it.
- You practically took your first
steps there. It must be very moving
for you…
Yes, a lot. It´s really nice coming
back. My first teacher was Olga
Ferri and at the same time I danced
at the Colón, just before joining the
ABT which was the most important
decision in my career.
At the age of 19, Paloma became
part of the ABT´s history as she was
the youngest dancer being
promoted to principal. She joined
the company when she was 15, only
a girl who would not hesitate in
moving permanently to New York.
«At the beginning I lived with a
couple, friends of my parents, who
lived there and who even today are
like a second family to me. It was
hard as I didn´t speak English and
New York was very different than
today, in the 90´s it was a much
more insecure city», she remembers.
- When you are away, what do
you miss the most about Argentina?
My family and friends. I love New
York, it’s a wonderful city that has
given me everything, and even
though I’m really happy there, I visit
my relatives very often for I love
Buenos Aires. Argentina is my
country, my home, it’s been part of
my upbringing that is why I always
try to speak highly about it, proudly,
to show the best part and highlight
our positive side. On this occasion,
I’m on holiday so I can stay a little
longer.
But Paloma doesn’t take a break,
nor even on holiday. She is also
here with the purpose of rehearsing
for the Teatro Colón performance. «I
could’ve stayed in New York
enjoying summer, instead, I chose
coming here to be with my coach,
visit the theatre, and rehearse so as
to save time and avoid hurries», she
says.
For the time Paloma returns to
Buenos Aires, the whole company
will be in the pre-dress rehearsal
and the dress rehearsal. Yet she is
such a perfectionist that she adds:
«Even I have danced with my
partner (Marcelo Gomes) this version
of Le Corsaire several times at the
ABT, I was the one who wanted to
come».
- What do you feel when you look
back and see such long career, all
you have achieved?
My career is the product of a
number of things: every day,
teacher, stage, couch, and theatre.
Of course, the most important one
was when I first started, that is why
my teacher Olga Ferri and the
Colón have my heart since they
trained me. Joining the ABT at the
age of 15 is one of the most
incredible and extraordinary
experiences of my life.
Cambio de Aire38 |
...- Which qualities do you have to
have become the dancer you are
today?
Many, so when people ask me it’s
not easy to say what it takes, talent
itself isn’t enough. I’m grateful to my
teachers and family, I would be
nobody without them. Many people
have encouraged me to be what I
am, I should thank for that.
Many factors have to concur at the
same time: talent indeed, but also
personality, strength, and willingness,
in addition to learning how to deal
with pressure. Some people work
really hard but as hard as they try,
they won’t make it without talent. On
the contrary, others have everything
but lack that «special something»
you need to go out on stage and
dance.
- For some reason Paloma Herrera
is unique…after all the lessons,
rehearsals and ballets performed, is
there any left to learn?
There is one thing I’m curious
about: I’ve seen many dancers who
felt like they’ve seen it all,
complaining about performing the
same ballet, about doing things over
and over again. I’ve never felt that
way; to me it’s always like the first
time on the stage. I love taking
lessons and rehearsing, the previous
work before a performance, to
know that I can do better, that there
are no limits.
Joining the company being so
young has given me the opportunity
of being on the stage so often that I
feel comfortable, free, calm, and
self-confident; I enjoy the perfor-
mance without pressures or worries
about the routine or choreography.
One can hold the bar a long time
but nothing compares to being on
the stage. Joining the Ballet was the
best decision I’ve ever made, and
being promoted to a principal since
I’m 19 has enabled me to have a
long career and know all the roles
in depth and perform them many
times. It’s always unique.
- How do you manage to carry on
with your relationship with all the
work you have?
We’ve been together for five
years. He lives here so we travel a
lot to see each other. It was hard at
the beginning, but eventually we
got used to it. If I’m in season or on
tour it is impossible to travel, so I do
it during the rehearsals. I leave one
night after a practice, stay here for
the weekend and be back in New
York ready to work the following
Monday. All set up!
- Do you admire any dancer?
I’ve always liked Alessandra Ferri
and Sylvie Guillem. I used to watch
their videos when I was a kid.
When I joined the ABT I had the
opportunity of meeting Alessandra
and sharing the dressing room when
I became a principal. Crazy!
Mikhail Baryshnikov, who also
danced with the ABT for a long
time, left a mark on me even though
he was gone when I started. The
ABT was like a dream come true for
there were the people I admired
the most.
- How do you picture
yourself in ten years?
I have no idea; I live the
day without making plans.
Ballet is youth, pleasure and
magic; it can not mean
trouble, pain or indifference.
Some ballet dancers have
been on the stage for too
long, but I won’t do that. I’ll
go on dancing while I feel it.
A lot of people choose this
career because of the
surrounding glamour, the
flowers, the tutu, the galas,
and performances. I’m not
interested in anything of that,
I like and love what I do, the
rest came additionally and I
enjoy it however, it’s not the
main reason for doing what I do.
- If someone who doesn’t know
anything about Paloma Herrera
asked who she is, what would you
say?
Well, I don’t know! Perhaps that
is a question you should ask
someone else! I’d say I’m a lucky
person because I do what I like
and feel grateful. I’m aware this is
a difficult career and that I’ve
made a great effort to get the
best out of me, without a reason, I
did it because I love dancing. I’ve
always had a clean career
because I followed my heart and
pursued my goals. That’s a good
thing.
Elegant and refined, Paloma
makes everything around shine.
Eyes set inevitably on her and
ears pay attention to her words
like someone who recognizes a
star whom success and fame have
not changed, and who keeps in
her spirit the same love for
dancing and the same original
passion she had when she was just
a glimpse of the gifted dancer she
is today .
