Previous Teacher Related Experience While at school in the sixth form I joined a group called ‘Read on Write away’. The group was established for students to go to a local school once or twice a week to read with individual students, and the whole class. This introduced me to the world of teaching which I found to be very fulfilling. Because I was working with 6-7 year olds, I found out immediately that you need to engage the students’ attention, and wherever possible, make lessons fun throughout to retain their concentration.

• I also helped coach football to a group of young people between the ages of 10-15weekly during the 6 weeks holidays. This experience in particular made me appreciatethe behavioural variations between teenagers and the younger age group. Although thefocus here was on a specific skill which the children for the most part enjoyed, it wasstill an extremely rewarding experience.

Camp Counsellor in USA

In the summer of 2009 I took up a post at a Children’s Christian camp in NorthCarolina, USA for 11 weeks. In the camp the children stayed for a week at a timewhere, as a counsellor, I had to stay in the dormitories with the children, meaning thehours worked were about 14/15 a day. The students’ ages ranged from 5 to 15. Mymajor responsibilities were:

• Organising students during meals, shower times, and preparation for bed timeetc. Keeping them entertained with any lulls in proceedings e.g. while queuingfor dinner. Did this by playing games, singing songs etc.

• Head of football and other lessons, in which I had to make differentiatedlesson plans for a wide variety of levels. I was dealing with beginners,intermediate and advanced players.

• I joined in group activities, motivating the students. They enjoyed it muchmore when a teacher was involved in activities, providing the teacher didn’tdominate them!

• I performed the role of counsellor to individual students, in case they had anypersonal problems.

Skills/Personal Qualities

I consider that I have particular skills in the following areas:

Team Working

• I am an enthusiastic and approachable person, with well developed communicationskills, who enjoys positive relations with colleagues and students. I like to build arapport as soon as possible when teaching.

Organisation

• In relation to my previous teaching, personal organisation was vital, as I was oftenmulti-tasking when dealing with different students, all with differing needs. It isessential that you cater to all your students and make sure the work is the rightbalance between being challenging, yet not so hard that they lose confidence.Especially when teaching a language, confidence is essential for successful learning.

Communication

• All aspects of my previous work, both teaching and career based, have made meappreciate the vital significance of effective and clear communication. In addition,group and individual presentations were a key part of my degree course and I havedeveloped both confidence and competence in delivering these over recent years. Ihave no doubt that my maturity and understanding of work-based and inter-personalrelationships has developed further as a consequence of my experiences abroad.
