Pastor’s Note ~ 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time

We recently celebrated two important feasts on June 19 and 20. The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and The Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Now we celebrate Father’s Day on the 12th Sunday of the year. All three honor the relation-ships we have with our brother Jesus Christ, our Blessed Mother, and our dear dads. The heart is indeed the center of it all. From the Sacred Heart we experience that His love is everlasting, and this reminds us to love one another as He loves us. From the heart of Mary we learn to reflect in our heart on God’s unconditional love for us. From the heart of our dads we cherish the gift of fatherhood and we extend our blessings to them. March-June 2020 Report: Part One Blessings and prayers to our parishioners and families! Thank you for your contin-

ued support and guidance during these months when we have been challenged by physical distancing and the COVID-19 restrictions. Since we have not been able to meet and share very easily these days, I find it necessary to give an extensive report on the many pastoral areas that affect our parish spiritually, socially, and financially. Our staff has been meeting weekly with ZOOM conferencing while our office has been closed to the public. However, we have been in touch with you our beloved parishioners as much as we can. What follows is a comprehensive report on key elements of parish life. It will be in the bulletin in three parts over the next few weeks. We welcome two new members of the administrative council: Cecilia Pelayo and

Claudia Lorena Marron. We also welcome Dan Troglin to serve as our St. Henry Board Corporate Secretary.

The capital campaign continues to stretch its muscle. Due to city offices being closed and forced to do much business off site, building permits have been delayed in many cases. Our contractor, R.A. Gray, is delayed in completing three school projects (Forest Grove, Beaverton, and Lake Oswego), so we now have a start date of late August to begin our Welcome Center construction. There is some good news. We will complete two sub-projects over the summer: reroofing the church and office along with installing the sprinkler system in the church. This will require some scheduling adjustments for Mass in the main church. Also, in mid June we are signing the agreement with R.A. Gray Construction. We are very close to obtaining the building permit from the city of Gresham. The permit is contingent on the parish guaranteeing the completion of related city works in Phase One (2021) and Phase Three (2023). We are approved as of June 10th for the archdiocesan loan from the Parish Funds Trust. This is based on pledges (collateral) to be re-ceived.

Offertory Report: We are blessed by your generosity during these difficult economic times. We are currently down in overall contribution to meet our budget for 2019-2020. YTD the needed funds for expenses was $829,017, our offertory is presently YTD $723,145, down almost 13%.

Budget 2019-20 and Budget 2020-2021: The budget is a work in progress, being a new business manager here, Claire is learning all the aspects of this once a year process. The ministries and staff changes throw some wrenches into the mix. This virus situation has caused schedules for volunteers and staff to be stopped or changed and working around this has caused things to be pushed out a bit. When completed it will be given to the appropri-ate people for approval.

We have applied for and received the PPP “loan” from the CARES federal funding. This has been a wel-comed relief to our financial challenges. This covers staff salaries and benefits for 2 ½ months. Parts TWO and THREE will follow in the next bulletins.

In the love of Christ Jesus, Fr. Charles, Fr. Julio, Deacon Larry, Deacon Lou, Claire, Sara, Terri, Jeanne, Emma, Ed, Barbara, and Veronikka.

Respect Life ~ Walking with Moms in Need: A Year in Service

Pg 4

Your baby has now completed 5 months of life. The mother may feel the baby kick, turn or hiccup. Each side of the brain has a billion nerve cells now and the senses—smell, vision, touch, taste and hearing are develop-ing. At this time in our baby’s life the threat of abortions still real. Keep praying for your baby that they will continue to develop and grow. Pray for the baby’s mother too, that she will protect her baby. Prayer: Jesus, protect and save the unborn.

The Unites States Conference of Catholic Bishops remind us that pregnant and parenting moms in need are in our parishes and our neighborhoods. Similarly, Pope Francis reminds us our parishes need to be “islands of mercy in the midst of a sea of indifference.” The bishops are inviting parishes, through the support of their bishop and pastor, to join a nationwide effort from March 25, 2020 to March 25, 2021 entitled: Walking with Moms in Need: A Year of Service. It is hoped that everyone in the parish community know where to refer a pregnant woman in need. The St Henry Respect Life Committee plans to announce a number of resources to assist parishioners in this regard. One resource to assist moms is called Baby Blues Connection (Phone# 800-557-8375). The mission of Baby Blues Connection is to support parents and their families coping with preg-nancy and postpartum mood disorders with information, resources, and community; and connect and support the volunteers, staff, and professionals who serve them. For more information about this series of announce-ments contact www.usccb.org/about/pro-life-activities/index.cfm or call the parish office and ask to speak with Jerry McAfee of the St. Henry Respect Life Committee

Single fathers usually sit in the back row of their children's school performances. Fathers who are married usually sit as close to the front of the audiences, with their spouses. Why is this? Well, we all know how important mothers are to the well-being of a family. However, we as a culture look at single fathers with a bit of suspicion. Fathers are as important as mothers are, but offer a different perspec-tive on life and bring a much needed role in bringing up children. Let us welcome all fathers today to the front row of our lives and acknowledge how important they have been, and continue to be in our lives.

Let us pray... Gracious God and Father, our first father, You are the One who has brought us to life in this world you created. You created us and everything around us. We turned away from you and only after disappointing you did we return your love.

Look with favor on our earthly fathers. They helped create us in your image. We have disappointed them, but have come to realize just how important they are to us.

Bless all our fathers, living and deceased, with com-fort and health. We bring all their needs to you and ask for strength so they may live worthy lives.

We ask all this in the name of your Son, our model of what it means to reverence our fathers. In Christ's name. Amen.

Father’s Day Blessing

Did You Know ~ The Sign of Peace

Peace and Justice ~ The Challenge of Peace Par. 202 U S Catholic Bishops

Pg 5

Question: Why do Catholics give the sign of peace to one another at Mass?

Answer: The sign of peace is a part of the Mass that takes place immediately after we offer the Lord’s Prayer. Inspired by the Jesus’ words to his first followers, we stand together in a spirit of communion to pray as Jesus taught us: “Our Father who art in heaven…” In this prayer, we call for the coming of God’s kingdom in all its fullness and ask that God provides for our needs — “Give us, this day, our daily bread” — to forgive our sins and to bring us to the joy of heaven.

It is almost natural, then, that the rite of peace would follow. As the celebrant prays that Christ’s peace will fill our hearts, our communities, the Church, and the whole world, we extend to those around us a sign of peace (usually a hug or a handshake) as a symbol of the communion that we experience now and will experience forever in the fullness of the reign of God.

We are also reminded of Jesus’ teachings that if we are at prayer and remember that a brother or sister is holding something against us, then we are to go and seek reconciliation with them before we continue our prayer (see Matthew 5:23). And so, the sign of peace also reminds us of the need to truly be in communion — united in love and peace — with God and one another before we approach the altar to receive the Eucharist.

So, the next time you’re at Mass and the time comes for the sign of peace, remember that this is a moment to celebrate the gift of Christ’s peace that each of us has received from God and to pass that peace along to those around us. We need this moment to practice, because this is also the same peace of Christ that we are instructed to carry out into the world at the end of Mass when the priest or deacon says to us, “Go, in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.” ©LPi

The Challenge of Peace The truth that the globe is inhabited by a single family, in which all have the same basic needs, and all have a

right to the goods of the earth, is a fundamental principle of Catholic teaching.

Zarephath Ministries, a non-profit community outreach program located in Gresham, is looking to add new Board Members. This organization has been feeding the hungry in East Multnomah County for the past 35 years (see feedeastcounty.org). If you have talent in operating a business, managing a finance department, or running events, this opportunity may interest you. Please call Kathy Thompson 503-998-7661 for more information.

Peter’s Pence Collection

Next Week we will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression and disasters. Please put this donation in a separate envelope labeled Peter’s Pence and drop in the offertory basket.

There are many things of which we can be afraid: being rebuked, rejection, anger, being challenged, having to defend ourselves, standing alone, insecurity, failure, and even death. For some, identifying and overcoming their fears is a daunting task. Regardless of how much they may want to break the cycle of fear, they find that they remain close friends with old and dysfunctional behavioral habits and norms. Maybe what they really fear is change. There are many who gravitate to the familiar and comfortable, and find safety and security in doing so, even if they remain mired in mediocrity. Human beings have to learn that there is life beyond the “what has always been” and that happiness and depth are possible when old structures and systems have to be left behind. Can you leave the near and dear, the comfortable and familiar, the safe and secure, and discover new oppor-tunities? The shear thought of doing so can bring on feelings of apprehension, intense anger, resentment, defensiveness, reluctance, resistance, and even apathy. If we have to be responsible for making the change, cowardice can creep in. If someone else is to blame for making the change, any number of possible negative reactions are possible. In the end, only one thing is required and that is God. If I can rely on and deepen my relationship with God, especially in the Eucharist along with a community of believers, then little else is of great concern. We have to figure out what is really important. It is not always what we think. The Gospel calls us to stretch ourselves and try new things, not to remain stuck and stagnant in familiar ways. We are asked to live life more deliberately, radically, and intentionally. We are asked to leave the famil-iar behind and learn to live with changing, and often limiting, human structures. We cannot get too caught up in the physical, ideological, or structural systems we are used to. The Holy Spirit always leads and guides us. If we trust this, we will find ourselves doing things we never thought we could do. Always seek the path to joy and love. They keep us from falling victim to our fears and from seeking the nostalgic crutches we think we need to achieve a sense of well-being and happiness. ©LPi
