Historical plastering
All over the world, plasterers have been using the same types of tools for similar tasks for thousands of years.

Ancient Egyptian float
One example of an ancient plastering tool can be seen
at the Manchester Museum. The wooden float pictured
below was excavated from the pyramid of King
Senwosret dating back to 1880–1874BC. That’s 3,887
years old!

Tools and equipment
A standard toolkit for applying scratch coats would include
the following:
• darby
• feather edge
• spirit level
• trowel
• hawk
• spot board and stand
• comb scratcher
• selection of brushes
• buckets.
