508 University of Durham Dr. E. J. R. Primrose, general practitioner in Brora, has been appointed university medical officer. University of Sheffield The title of visiting professor of medicine has been conferred on Prof. R. R. H. Lovell of the University of Melbourne and Prof. H. N. Robson of the University of Adelaide, who will come to Sheffield, under the Ernest Finch Memorial Fund, in March and October respectively. Dr. Thomas Lodge has been appointed a lecturer in radiodiagnosis, and Dr. E. W. Parry an assistant lecturer in pathology. Royal College of Surgeons of England Dr. H. J. A. Dartnall will give the Edridge-Green lecture on Wednesday, March 11, when he will speak on visual pig- ments-a photobiological study. On Friday, March 20, Dr. W. G. Senior will give the Webb-Johnson lecture on dental health and the national economy. Both lectures will be held at the college, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London, W.C.2, at 5 P.M. Faculty of Anaesthetists.-Prof. E. M. Papper, from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, will give the Joseph Clover lecture at the college on Wednesday, March 18, at 4 P.M. He will speak on the impact of man, machines, and mechanisms on the clinical practice of anaesthesia. Resuscitation and Cardiac Pacing A conference on this subject will be held at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from March 18 to 20. British Diabetic Association The medical and scientific section of this Association will meet at University College, Cardiff, on April 3 and 4. Okeke, visiting physician to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has given the school E500 to endow a prize to be awarded each year to the best student taking the course for the new academic postgraduate diploma in tropical public health of the University of London, Dr. Okeke was himself a postgraduate student at the school. Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation Trust At the inaugural meeting of this Trust held at the Mansion House on Feb. 20, Lord Bossom was elected chairman of the trustees. The medical advisory committee are: Dr. A. P. Norman, Dr. C. 0. Carter, Dr. D. N. Lawson, Dr. Lynne Reid, and Dr. Winifred Young. Mr. John B. International Congress on the Scientific Study of Mental Retardation This congress will be held in Copenhagen from Aug. 7 to 14, under the auspices of the International Committee on the Scientific Study of Mental Deficiency. New Chair of Virology at Hammersmith The National Fund for Research into Poliomyelitis and Other Crippling Diseases has agreed to donate eel 00,000 to the Postgraduate Medical School of London to endow a chair of virology at the school. Negotiations are proceeding with the University of London about the establishment of the chair. Funds for the building of a department of virology have already been donated by the Wellcome Trust, and the depart- ment will be housed in the new medical school building now under construction. Diagnosis in General Practice The East Anglia Faculty of the College of General Practi. tioners is to hold a symposium on this subject at the department of human ecology of the University of Cambridge, on May 3( and 31. Course in Experimental Teratology This course will be held at the department of anatomy of the University of Cambridge, from Sept. 21 to 25.
