ROYAL EARLSWOOD INSTITUTION.—The seventy-fourth annual report (1921) of the Earlswood Board ofManagement conveys the welcome information that theresidual estate of the late Mr. W. H. Ray has now beenmade available and £30,000 realised to extinguish bankers’loans and other outstanding liabilities. The largelyenhanced current expenses still call for liberal support onthe part of subscribers. The report of the medical superin-tendent, Dr. C. Caldecott. shows that during the year 1920the average number of patients resident was 442, 281 malesand 161 females, 47 adminissions, 37 discharges, and 1-1 deathsbeing recorded ; 23 were admitted by "election and partpayment," ? 2-1 on "
payment," and four were " aided bylocal committees." A few of the new cases raise hopesof improvement from training, but there is also a con-siderable percentage of hospital cases. Twenty-six of thosedischarged were reported
’’
improved," and a yolith of 21was discharged by the Visiting Justices as
*’ recovered."The death-rate was low-i.e., 3’16 per cent. to the averagenumber resident. Pulmonary tuberculosis was responsiblefor four deaths (28.5 per cent.), and there was also a caseof intestinal tuberculosis. The number of epileptics inthe institution represents the percentage of 13.34 to theaverage number resident, and the occurrence of no lessthan 0197 fits was recorded during 1920, three patients, accounting between them for 3137 of the above, havingdied in the " status epilepticus." Considerable reorganisa-tion seems to be in progress in the educational departmentsof the establishment, including special instruction of aninteresting character for low-grade and infant cases ; whilethe industrial and trade work, for which Earlswood hasso long been noted, is fully maintained.
