The Segurmatica Mobile Security antivirus is this year’s newcomer launched by Segurmatica, Cuba’s Informatics Security and Consulting Com-pany, aimed at protecting Microsoft Windows operating systems in its 1.7.2 version for PCs. The launch of this new application was mentored by Kaspersky Lab. On this project and others in the works, we talked to Paris Valladares, the compa-ny’s marketing manager for Latin America. What are Kaspersky’s goals on the island nation?For us, protecting the world is the name of the game and Cuba is a major piece in Latin America, a region in which we’re going the extra mile in coordination with Segurmatica, our leading dis-tributor here on the island nation.What do you have in store to protect users?In the case of specific attacks, we count on a group called Great Team. This unit is made up of developers from around the world in a bid to detect attacks of this nature. We also offer solu-tions for the mobile platform, which is extreme-ly important in today’s world because we live in times in which people make use of cell phones and need to remain online. That’s why we call on consumers to remain posted so they could use all devices available to them in a safe way. Believing that everything’s alright and nothing’s going to happen is the biggest mistake of all.

There are still some countries that rely solely on antiviruses and in the face of today’s technol-ogy that’s not good enough. Therefore, our com-pany has developed programs, such as the pen-etration tests, that detect whether a particular company is vulnerable to attacks.

We’ve got other solutions for the protection of airports and power grids, which are highly vulnerable to attacks. In other sectors, such as banking, we provide the Kaspersky Fraud Pre-vention, an application that guarantees safe on-line transactions.In the case of a possible fake website, is there any solution the company has to offer?Our company’s website (kaspersky.com) enables users to post all kinds of reports. All they need to do is paste the URL of the site they believe it’s under attack and we simply run a virus check.What’s the value of Cuba for the Kaspersky market?It has great potentials, especially in terms of the huge leaps the country is taking in technology. Besides, Cuba boasts a disciplined culture in terms of security, so the odds of being attacked are pretty slim. However, we’re mindful that we need to further the cooperation in order to let the country have more access to these protec-tion tools.

¿Con qué armas cuenta hoy para pro-teger a los usuarios?Para ataques puntuales tenemos un equipo de trabajo llamado Great Team. Esta unidad la componen desarrolla-dores de todo el mundo encargados de detectar agresiones de esa natura-leza. También ofrecemos soluciones en la plataforma móvil, de suma im-portancia pues vivimos en una pobla-ción que utiliza celulares y necesita mantenerse conectada a internet. Por eso instamos a los consumidores a que se informen para que usen todo tipo de medios, pero de forma segura: creer que todo está bien y que no nos sucederá nada es el gran error.

Todavía hay países que se prote-gen con el uso de un antivirus y en la actualidad tecnológica ya ese tipo de medidas no es suficiente. Por ello, nuestra compañía ha desarrollado programas como los test de penetra-ción, que detectan si alguna empresa se encuentra vulnerable.

Tenemos otras soluciones que pro-tegen aeropuertos y empresas eléctri-cas, pues son esferas muy vulnerables a ataques. En otros sectores como el bancario, por ejemplo, contamos con Kaspersky Fraud Prevention, que ga-rantiza las transacciones bancarias hechas digitalmente.En el caso de una posible página falsa ¿ofrece la compañía alguna solución?La página de nuestra compañía (kas-persky.com) tiene un espacio habili-tado para que los usuarios hagan este tipo de denuncias: simplemente debe poner el URL del sitio que considera contaminado y nosotros nos encarga-mos de revisarlo.¿Qué valor tiene Cuba como mercado para Kaspersky?Tiene gran potencial, sobre todo por los grandes pasos que está dando en materia tecnológica. Además, Cuba cuenta con una cultura bastante disci-plinada en términos de seguridad, por lo que son menos los riesgos de ata-ques. No obstante, estamos conscien-tes de que debemos cooperar más para que el país tenga mucho más acceso a esas herramientas de protección.

¿Cómo puede insertarse Cuba de forma eficiente en la economía mundial?, fue una de las interro-

gantes planteadas por Agustín Lage Dávila, director general del Centro de Inmunología Molecular en su confe-rencia “La empresa en la economía del conocimiento: ¿qué hemos aprendido de la experiencia del sector biotecnoló-gico?” Para responderla, el Dr. presentó la situación actual de empresas cuba-nas pertenecientes a la esfera biotec-nológica, pero que de manera general pueden ser aplicables a otras del país.

Por otra parte, expuso un análisis económico basado en recursos y de-mandas nacionales en el que puntua-lizó nuestra imposibilidad de contar con elementos como la demanda inter-na y los recursos naturales para avan-zar en el desarrollo. Por ello, señaló que las estrategias al respecto deben estar guiadas a la ciencia y la tecnolo-gía, pues son dos de los campos que han contribuido notablemente al de-sarrollo de la humanidad, además de brindar aportes significativos desde el punto de vista económico y en los que podemos competir internacionalmen-te. En ese sentido habló también de la necesidad de potenciar la gestión ex-

portadora, ya “que no contamos con empresas de alto valor agregado”.

De igual modo fueron tratados algunos de los desafíos a los que se enfrenta la administración interna de muchas empresas en el país, tales como la definición de objetivos y de procesos, traducidos en creatividad y disciplina, respectivamente. Y cons-tituyen desafíos porque los centros nacionales “son buenos en uno pero no en el otro”.

Avanzada la ponencia, surgieron otras interrogantes: ¿se necesitan polí-ticas industriales generales o políticas específicas para cada sector? Explicó el director que la implementación de una estrategia general provocaría un desa-rrollo lento mientras que aplicar méto-dos particulares haría que las empre-sas tuvieran baja sostenibilidad dado que no establecerían intercambio con otras esferas de la economía. Por ello, la mejor estrategia a seguir sería “una combinación inteligente de ambas”.

CUBAN ENTERPRISES ON THE WAY TO DEVELOPMENT“OUR STRATEGIES MUST BE LED BY SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY”

How can Cuba get a more efficient insertion in the world economy? That was one of the ques-tions broached by Agustin Lage Davila, director general of the Molecular Immunology Center during his lecture entitled “The enterprise in the economics of knowledge: what have we learned from the biotechnological sector’s experience?” In this sense, Dr. Lage laid out the ongoing situ-ation of Cuban enterprises attached to biotech-nology, an experience that can have an across-the-board application in other companies in the countries.

On the other hand, he spelled out an econom-ic assessment based on nationwide resources and demands. He stressed on the island nation’s impossibility to count on such elements as do-mestic demand and natural resources needed to make headway toward development. Therefore, “our strategies must be led by science and tech-nology, the two fields that have made signifi-cant contributions to the advance of mankind, and because they also make significant contribu-tions from an economic standpoint and allow for us to compete fairly worldwide.” In this sense, he also spoke of the need to boost the country’s exporting capabilities because “we don’t have companies with high values added.”

At the same time, he tackled the challenges faced in the internal management of many enter-prises across the nation, such as the definition of objectives and processes that eventually render in creativity and discipline, respectively. And they pose challenges because the national centers “are good at one of them but not at both”.

Other questions popped up as the presenta-tion unfolded: does each sector need general or specific industrial policies? Mr. Lage said the im-plementation of a general strategy would lead to a slow development, while the application of particular policies would make enterprises have feeble sustainability since they wouldn’t be able to share and exchange with other sectors of the economy. Therefore, the best strategy to follow is “a smart combination of both.”

ción en mercados tan exigentes como el de Estados Unidos y el de Japón. El producto más importante de Inspur es el hardware del servidor y uno de sus aportes más significativos fue la producción de placas de circuitos im-presos y la instalación y pruebas del Tianhe-2, el superordenador más rápi-do del mundo desde 2013.

La empresa china participa por vez primera en la Convención y Feria Internacional de Informática de Cuba, que este año celebra su XVI edición. Al respecto, comenta Shixing Li, Director General de Inspur para Centro Améri-ca y el Caribe.

“Estar aquí es un honor muy gran-de. Nuestra presencia busca com-partir experiencias, ayudar al sector informático cubano y consolidar las re-laciones con este país amigo de China.

“Llevamos cuatro años de trabajo en Cuba, colaborando con Copextel, que funciona como socio y soporte técnico en el país. Inspur tiene una extensa y reconocida línea de produc-ción, que cubre casi en su totalidad el sector informático. Somos la única empresa china con la tecnología para desarrollar y fabricar un servidor de 32 procesadores, y una de las pocas en el mundo con esta capacidad”, explicó.

“Uno de nuestros productos es el K1, centrado en garantizar la seguri-dad informática, con el que tenemos varios proyectos en China, inspirados en las palabras del presidente Xi Jin-ping: ‘sin seguridad informática no hay seguridad nacional’.

“Creo que tenemos mucho futuro en Cuba. Por eso estamos aquí y por eso pretendemos asistir a la próxima edición de este importante evento”, concluyó.

The realm of technology is becoming increas-ingly heterogeneous. The leading companies from the past are facing more competition, even with proposals and solutions that have laid bare the alleged supremacy they claimed to have. HP, Dell and IBM are no longer the lone dominators. In this scene of technological effervescence, Inspur stands tall, a Chinese company that’s the number-one local server provider and the world’s fifth largest company of its kind.

This rock-solid multination kicked off the 21st century as a local startup based in Shandong. Just 16 years later, it’s scattered everywhere un-der the sun. Its marketing actions include server manufacturing and software development. What’s more, it’s a recipient of outsourced com-panies from such demanding markers as the United States and Japan. Inspur’s top-of-the-line product is no doubt the server hardware and one of its most significant contributions is the making of printed circuit boards, as well as the installation and testing of Tianhe-2, the world’s fastest supercomputer since 2013.

The Chinese company is attending Cuba’s In-ternational Informatics Convention and Fair for the first time, this year in its 16th edition. Inspur director general for Central America and the Ca-ribbean, Shixing Li, touched on these issues.

“It’s a great honor to be here. Our presence seeks to share experiences, pitch a hand to Cu-ba’s IT sector and strengthen our ties with this friendly country.

“We’ve been working in Cuba for four years, collaborating with Copextel, which is our part-ner and our technical supporter in Cuba. Inspur boasts a long and renowned production line that covers nearly all the IT sector. We’re the only Chi-nese company with the technology required to develop and build a 32-processor server and just one of the few in the world with this capacity,” he said.

“One of our products is the K1, designed to guarantee informatics security. We have a num-ber of projects going on with it in China, inspired in the words Chinese President Xi Jinping said: ‘there’s no national security without informat-ics security.’

“I think we have a bright future in Cuba. That’s why we’re here and that’s why we’ll be attending next year’s edition of this important event,” he concluded.
