My dear parishioners, This past Monday, Monsignor John (Jack) O’Brien died after a long battle with cancer. Most of you probably do not know him, but when I was a newly ordained priest, I was sent to him for my first assignment. He was the pastor of St. Benedict Joseph Labre, Richmond Hill for a long time and I was with him for five of those years. He had a reputation for being tough and it was well-deserved. He did not like non-sense of any kind. Even though he had an Irish last name, he was more German than anything, which he got from his mother. He still had a sense of humor and I loved trying to get him to laugh. He was the right kind of pastor for me as a newly ordained and I learned a great deal from him. He was al-ways open to me sharing ideas, would give his input and we would discuss possibilities. He was not afraid of correcting me and I was not afraid to show him what I thought. We developed a trust that made it easy for us to work together. We might not have always agreed, but we had each other’s back. I remember when I first came to see him, we went to his room to talk. He immediately got on his knees to ask for my blessing. That always stayed with me. Msgr. O’Brien taught me how to work as a priest but also how to relax. He would meet every Friday night with a priest homily preparation group and I saw the frater-nity that he had. He always encouraged me to maintain that same kind of fraternity and allowed me to host priest Christ-mas parties for my friends. His loyalty to his priest friends was inspiring. He was a man of prayer. I frequently caught him praying the rosary in his room in the afternoon, or saying his breviary. We would at times run into each other in the recto-ry adoration chapel. We would share books, fiction and theo-logical, and then share our thoughts about them. When he was retiring, I invited him to come live with me at my last assignment, Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jamaica. My big selling point was that there is a YMCA down the block and he loved to swim every morn-ing. He was with me for a number of years before I came to our parish. He remained there and continued his swimming and serving the parish. If he is to be remembered for one thing, it would be his love for the Hispanic community. He was one of the first priests sent away to study Spanish in the 1960’s. He was responsible for sending other seminarians and priests away to study Spanish. He began one of the first Masses in Spanish in the diocese at what was Sacred Heart Chapel in Brooklyn. He gave a voice to many of them and fought for their rights throughout his priesthood. He was one of the hardest working priests I have ever met. His counsel and his concern for me throughout the years has had a lasting effect. I ask if you could offer a Hail Mary for the repose of his soul and may he soon be with our Lord in the glory of heaven. God bless,

No siempre estábamos de acuerdo, pero nos apoyamos uno al otro. Recuer-do cuando fui a verlo por primera vez, fuimos a su dormitorio a hablar. Inmediatamente se arrodilló y pidió mi bendición. Eso siempre se quedó conmigo. Monseñor O’Brien me enseñó a trabajar como sacerdote pero también a relajarme. El se reunía todos los viernes en la noche con un grupo de sacerdotes de preparación de homilía y vi la confraternidad que tenía. El siempre me animó a mantener la misma clase de confraternidad y me permitió ser el anfitrión para fiestas navideñas con mis amigos. Su lealtad para sus ami-gos sacerdotes fue una inspiración. El fue un hombre de oración. Frecuentemente lo vi rezando el rosario en su dormitorio en la tarde, o diciendo su breviario. Algunas veces nos encontrábamos en la capilla de ado-ración de la casa parroquial. Compartíamos libros, ficción y teo-lógicos y después compartíamos nuestros pensamientos acerca de ellos. Cuando él se iba a pensionar, lo invité a vivir conmigo en mi última asignación, Presentación de la Santísima Virgen María, en Jamaica. El mejor punto para que aceptara era que allí hay un YMCA en la cuadra siguiente y a él le gustaba nadar to-das las mañanas. El estuvo conmigo por varios años antes de que yo viniera a nuestra parroquia. El se quedó allá y continuó su natación y sirviendo a la parroquia. Si a él, se le va a recordar por una cosa, será por su amor a la comunidad hispana. El fue uno de los primeros sacer-dotes enviados a estudiar español en los años 1960. El era el res-ponsable de enviar seminaristas y sacerdotes a estudiar español. El comenzó una de las primeras Misas en español en la diócesis en la que era la Capilla del Sagrado Corazón en Brooklyn. El le dio una voz a muchos de ellos y luchó por sus derechos a través de su sacerdocio. El fue uno de los sacerdotes más trabajadores que he conocido. Sus consejos y preocupación por mí a lo largo de los años ha tenido un efecto duradero. St. Peter Claver, Priest Peter Claver was born June 26, 1580 of a working-class family in Catalonia, Spain. He joined the Jesuits and studied at Majorca, where the porter Alphonsus Rodriguez urged him to apply for the South America missions. After his ordination at Cartagena (in pre-sent-day Colombia) Peter declared himself Aethiopum servus, “Slave of the Africans.” He devoted himself to the multitudes of slaves who were brought to work the farms and mines, feeding, bandaging, catechizing, and fathering them. To their owners, he preached mercy. In his later years, Peter gave an annual retreat to the rough seamen who entered the port. He died September 8, 1654 and was canonized in 1888 alongside Alphonsus Rodriguez. He became the patron saint of slaves in Colombia.

San Pedro Claver, Sacerdote Nació el 26 de junio de 1580, en una familia de clase trabajadora en Cataluña, España. Se unió a los Jesuitas y estudió en Mallor-ca, donde el portero Alfonso Rodríguez lo animó a aplicar para las misiones en América del Sur. Después de su ordenación en Cartagena (Colombia en la actualidad) Pedro se declaró a sí mismo Aethiopum servus “Esclavo de los Africanos”. Se dedicó a la muchedumbre de esclavos quienes eran llevados para tra-bajar en las granjas y minas, dándoles de comer, colocando vendajes, catequizándolos y sirviendo como padre espiritual. A sus dueños, les predicaba la misericordia. En sus últimos años, Pedro dio un retiro anual a los marineros rudos quienes entra-ban al puerto. Murió el 8 de septiembre de 1654 y fue canoniza-do junto con Alfonso Rodríguez. Es el santo patrón de los escla-vos en Colombia.

The year following the 150th Anniversary was filled with emotion: due to low enrollment and financial deficits, Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians School (St. Mary’s School) was forced to close its doors in June 2005 after 147 years of educating children in the area of Winfield. Howev-er, parish life continued to thrive. During Father Noel’s Pas-torate, the Food Pantry continued to help provide for the neighboring poor and the school was rented. The old school basement was renovated and an elevator was installed for ease of access; this provided ample space for the Religious Education instruction of the parish children as well as for other parish meetings and events. At the conclusion of the 12th year of parish administration by the Holy Ghost Fa-thers, Father Christopher O’Connor was appointed the 14th Pastor by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio in 2014. Father O’Con-nor took up the task of updating the grounds: additional lighting for greater safety and security, a ramp for the hand-icapped, and improved acoustical system in the church, the bell tower was illuminated and “sound” was added to the bells. Once again, through the generosity of the parishioners participating in the Generations of Faith Campaign, a much needed boiler was installed in the church and repairs on the organ (brought from the old church). All this is evidence of the people’s love for their parish that continues over these 167 years.

El año después del 150 aniversario estuvo lleno de sentimien-tos: debido a pocas matrículas y déficits financieros, la escuela de María Auxiliadora (Escuela St. Mary) se vio obligada a cerrar sus puertas en junio de 2005 después de 147 años educando los niños en el área de Winfield.
