arcelona lies on a plain extending from themountains to the sea between the Besós andLlobregat rivers. The municipal area has a

population slightly over one and a half million, a figure whichmore than doubles when the outlying metropolitan area is included.

It is Spain’s second largest city and the capital of theAutonomous Region of Catalonia. This international city enjoysa privileged situation on account of its geographical location inthe northeast triangle of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as for itslengthy history and vigorous economic and cultural activity.

One of the main defining features is the coexistence of twoofficial languages: Spanish or Castilian, and the Catalanlanguage, Catalonia’s own language.

EUROPEAN AND MEDITERRANEAN

Barcelona has sometimes been called a northern European cityin a southern Mediterranean country. Catalans are generallyconsidered, especially by the rest of Spain, serious, hardworkingpeople, receptive to innovations and forever focused oneconomic progress. However, for northern Europeans, Barcelonahas a marked Mediterranean character, not only because of itsclimate and beaches, but also for its devotion to enjoyment andpleasure in outdoor living. Armed with a spirit of being in thevanguard plus a high dose of civic-mindedness and rationality,the Barcelonese know how to combine these traits with a joy ofliving and a passion for festivals and traditions.

By AirEl Prat International Airport islocated only twelve kilometersfrom the city center. Train serviceconnects the airport with Santsrailway station every thirtyminutes. Every fifteen minutes theAerobús departs from the Plaza deCatalunya for the airport.

The airport has three terminals: A, B and C. The shuttle betweenBarcelona and Madrid operatesfrom terminal C about every thirtyminutes. Annual passenger trafficon domestic and internationalflights exceeds thirty million. Theairport expansion project currentlyunderway will double its presentcapacity.

By SeaThe port of Barcelona has eightterminals, five of which are forcruise ships and three for regular

ferry lines. In 2002, more than 600cruise liners with more than840,000 passengers stopped at theport. Ferries are operated by fourdifferent companies and maintainregular service with the BalearicIslands and Genoa, Italy. A “fastferry” between Barcelona andPalma de Mallorca takes a littleover three hours.

TWO THOUSAND YEARSOF HISTORY

It is hardly surprising thatBarcelona is an open cosmopolitancity. Profoundly aware of its longhistory and proud of its richheritage, the present-day city is alsothe product of diverse peoples andcultures which have left theirimprint and shaped its characterthroughout two thousand years.

Important vestiges still linger ofthe primitive Roman Colony ofBarcino, founded in the firstcentury B.C. in the area presentlycalled the Gothic Quarter. TheMiddle Ages was a splendid periodof city development and urbangrowth, when the powerfulAragonese empire extended

throughout the Mediterranean,establishing trade and culturalrelations.

In the mid-nineteenth century, thedevelopment project known as theEixample was undertaken inresponse to needed expansion ofthe city outside the medievalnucleus. By the turn of thecentury, Barcelona wasexperiencing an emergingindustrialization and a flourishingof the arts which contributeddecisively to the development ofthe architectural and designmovement known as“modernisme” (Catalonia’s versionof art nouveau). Great works ofleading modernist architects areevidence of this and have left theirunique, unmistakable and personalstamp on the urban landscape.

Barcelona’s designation as host ofthe 1992 Summer Olympicsprompted an upgrading of the city.This special sporting event notonly meant construction andenhancement of the city’sinfrastructure and facilities, butBarcelona was also able to show theworld its organizational skills, itspassionate character andindisputable appeal.

A TOURIST CITY

This two thousand year old vibrantcity, with its own language,Catalan, and special culture, hasbecome a leading touristdestination in recent years. Theyearlong benign climate withtemperatures averaging aroundseventeen degrees Centigrade, the extraordinary wealth of itsarchitectural and artistic heritage,and the unceasing activity in allareas of economic and culturaldevelopment attract more thanthree million visitors each year.Hotel capacity is approximatelythirty-five thousand, a figure thatincreases steadily with the additionof new establishments.

Hailed as the indisputable capitalof modernism, Spain’s version ofart nouveau, Barcelona has fivemasterpieces in this particularartistic style designated WorldHeritage by UNESCO: GüellPark, Palau Güell, Casa Milà or LaPedrera, Palau de la MúsicaCatalana, and Hospital de la SantaCreu i Sant Pau.

To facilitate visits, the city offersmany special services including atour bus (Bus Turístic), BarcelonaCard, Art Ticket, Art Nouveau Route (Ruta del Modernisme) and Walking Tours.

Urban Public TransportationBarcelona has eleven thousandtaxis identifiable by theircharacteristic yellow and blackcolor. Taxis can be found atspecially marked taxi ranks orsimply by hailing any passingvehicle with an illuminated greenrooftop light.

The ample public transportnetwork has five subway or Metrolines and a fleet of nine hundredbuses covering all areas of the city.

The central railway station is theEstación de Sants. The regional railservice of the Generalitat has twomain lines connecting Barcelonawith Sabadell and Terrassa, andalso with Montserrat. A third lineprovides urban service within the city in addition to theunderground network called the Metro.

An unhurried stroll throughthese pedestrian streets and squares is absolutelyindispensable to appreciate itsancient history, often livenedup by the presence ofspontaneous musicians, fairs,flea markets or some type offestive event, such as thesardanes (a popular Cataloniandance in circles, to the tune ofthe cobla or orchestra) heldevery Sunday at midday infront of the Cathedral.

It’s time to begin this shortbut compact route at thesteps leading to the Cathedral (1), a Gothic churchbuilt in the fourteenth and

Roman Barcino wasfounded here, and since then,the area has been andcontinues to be the supremehistoric, religious and politicalcenter of the city. It presentlyoccupies approximately whatin Roman times was the areaof the colony’s fortifiedenclosure.

The best way to really get toknow a city is to walk leisurely up and down itsstreets and around its plazas.Focusing all the senses on acity’s physiognomy to discoverthe character of its peopleand its historic and artisticlegacy awards an inquisitivetraveler with a very gratifyingexperience. A total of ninewalking tours through the city have been proposed. With the exception of theroute devoted to the

visionary architect Gaudí, allthe others are based ongeographical criteria and maybe totally or partially coveredon foot.

Before beginning a tour, werecommend dropping in atone of the Tourist InformationOffices in the city. Here,visitors can check on openingtimes, consult timetables andlearn about all the servicesavailable, such as the tour bus(Bus Turístic), a convenientand comfortable way to view the principal sights of interest.

fifteenth centuries, althoughthe principal façade was notfinished until the end of thenineteenth century, thanks tothe generous contribution ofa rich banker. Notable in thespacious interior are theChapel of Cristo de Lepanto,the magnificent choir stallsand the crypt of Santa Eulalia,one of the city’s patron saints,along with the Virgin of La Mercè (Our Lady of Mercy).Take the elevator near theapse for an amazing viewfrom the cathedral roof.

At Plaza Nova, we see the twintowers of the Roman walls (2).At the foot of the towers, we

notice the seven bronze lettersof Barcino, in honor of the oldRoman colony. These well-preserved towers framedone of the four main entrancesto the walled precinct.

Passing between the towerson Carrer del Bisbe and on theleft, opposite the chapeldevoted to Santa Lucía, is theCasa de l’Ardiaca (3), formerdwelling of the Archdeacon ofthe cathedral. The buildingoriginally dates from theeleventh century but hasundergone numerous repairs.Stop and see its handsomecourtyard with a palm treepeeking out over the façade.

Continuing ahead on Carrerdel Bisbe, the first street onthe right leads into one of thecity’s most charming squarescalled Plaza de Sant Felip Neri(4). Here we find ourselvescaptivated by a lovely patiowith a fountain in the middlewhose spouting waterprovides delicate backgroundmusic. We return to theCathedral through the otherexit on the square, proceedinginto the Cloister (5) by theSanta Eulalia door. Thechapels around the cloisterare devoted to differentsaints, who were patrons ofthe old artisan trade guilds, asubtle reminder of theirinfluence in the Middle Ages.

The Cathedral’s cloister has acertain kind of magic, with itscentral garden of magnoliasand palm trees, wherethirteen geese waddle aroundcontentedly. The numberthirteen is in commemorationof the child-martyr, St. Eulalia.

We depart through the Puertade la Pietat (Door of Pity),opposite the cloister’smagnificent little Gothictemple. On narrow Paradísstreet, the CentreExcursionista de Catalunyabuilding houses four ancientCorinthian columns belongingto the old Roman Temple ofAugustus (6). This impressivearcheological find can be

viewed at no charge. Nearby,in the Plaza del Rei (7), is thenoblest ensemble in themedieval quarter. Locatedhere are the different sectionsof the former royal palace ofthe Aragonese empire: thesplendid Saló del Tinell, theRoyal Chapel of Santa Ágataand tower-lookout, today part

of the Museu d’Història de laCiutat (City’s History Museum),including the Roman ruinsextending under the square,all of which can be visited.

Our walking tour comes to an end at Plaza de SantJaume (8), the administrativecenter of the city and site ofthe Ayuntamiento (City Hall)and Palau de la Generalitat,Catalonian Regionalgovernment offices.

The famous pedestrian streetof La Rambla is a long,colorful boulevard zig-zagging slightly through theold quarter like a lifeline,linking the centrally-locatedPlaza de Catalunya to theharbor. A busycommunications hub andimportant commercial area,the spacious plaza is a goodstarting point for our walkalong Barcelona’s mostemblematic and cosmopolitanstreet. Underneath the squareis the Tourist InformationOffice. La Rambla is like ananimated street theater witha kaleidoscope of curiouscharacters; a people-watcher’sparadise and microcosm ofunceasing activity at any hourof the day and night.

The name Rambla comes froman Arabic word meaning“riverbed”, an allusion to theold natural water canalsleading to the sea. La Ramblais many streets in one, and itsname changes at eachdifferent section, one of thereasons why it is popularlyreferred to in the plural as“Las Ramblas”.

Our walk takes us downtowards the sea, and so wewill begin at the Rambla deCanaletes (9), the sectionnearest Plaza de Catalunya.Drinking from Canaletesfountain is said to ensure areturn visit to Barcelona. Next, Carrer Tallers takes usinto the district of El Raval.The chief attractions here are the Centre de CulturaContemporània (CCCB) (Centerof Contemporary Culture) (10)

and the Museu d’ArtContemporani (MACBA)(Contemporary Art Museum) (11).

Back on La Rambla, and afterpassing the small street ofBonsuccés, at once we see aninteresting building on theright: the Academia deCiències i Arts (Science andArts Academy) (12), whichnow houses a theater. We arenow on the Rambla delsEstudis (13). The name of thisstretch was taken from an oldacademy. The sound of birdsand other little animals is oneof the surprises along thissection of the boulevard,scattered with stalls sellingsmall caged creatures. Closeby, on the corner of Calle delCarme, stands the Church ofBetlem (14), and on theopposite side of the street is

the neoclassical-style edificeof Palau Moja (15). We comenow to the Rambla de SantJosep (16), better known asRambla de les Flors for themulti-colored cascade offlower stalls lining thewalkway. To the right is thePalau de la Virreina (17), theformer palace of theVicereine, now used as amunicipal cultural center. Theexhibition hall always seemsto have something interestingto see. Tickets for a variety ofconcerts are sold on theground floor. On the sameside of the street is the oldestfood market and the mostauthentic of the fortymunicipal markets scatteredaround the city, La Boqueria(18), a shrine to thegastronomist and a delight tothe senses of any mortal.

At the endof the Pasaje de la Banca is the Museu de Cera(wax works) (23), a museum withmore than 360 famous waxfigures waiting togreet the visitor.For an upliftingfinale, take anelevator ride tothe observationgallery of theMonument toColumbus (24) foran outstandingview of the cityand harbor.

Between the streets ofHospital and Boqueria, our eyes are drawn to thepavement by the mosaic byJoan Miró (19), anotherlandmark on La Rambla. Atthe corner on the left is acuriously original buildingwith umbrella motifs and aChinese dragon decoratingthe façade, the Casa BrunoQuadros (20). Next comes theLiceu (21), Barcelona’s grandopera house. Although rebuiltseveral times, it continues tobe one of the symbols of thecity. The unassuming façadefails to reveal the elegantinterior.

A little further, after turningright on to Calle Nou de laRambla, we discover one ofGaudi’s masterpieces, themansion called Palau Güell,(see Gaudí route). Nearer thesea, we encounter another

The district of La Ribera isone of the most charmingand beloved areas in theCiutat Vella, the old quarterof Barcelona. During theMiddle Ages, it was thecenter of the trade guilds,commerce and shipping inBarcelona. Today, there aremany testimonies to itsvibrant past. Many streets stillbear names of the craft ortrade carried out there in thepast (Vidriera –glassmakers,Plata– silversmiths, etc.), aswell as the Llotja de Mar,headquarters of the Chamberof Commerce. Even thoughthe façade was remodeled inthe neoclassical style at theend of the eighteenthcentury, the interior’sperfectly-preserved Gothichalls bear witness to the

commercial and maritimepower of Barcelona duringmedieval times.

Recently, the neighborhoodhas attracted numerous smallartisan workshops, almost as ifhistory was being paid atribute. Remodeling of oldbuildings and the existence ofnumerous small restaurantsand bars have added specialcharm to this area.

Our itinerary begins on CalleArgenteria, a street leadingfrom the busy Via Laietana tothe Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar (25). Laietana refersto the Iberian tribe of theLaietani who settled herebefore the Romans. Duringthe first half of the twentiethcentury, the street was laidout in a straight line crossingthis part of the old city inorder to manage traffic and

connect the Eixample area tothe port; a very complex featof urban planning.

The Church of Santa Maria del Mar, better known as theCathedral of La Ribera, is oneof the finest examples ofGothic architecture inCatalonia. Built entirely in the fourteenth century, theharmonious proportions and serene grandeur of thisensemble create a powerfulimpact.

Off to one side of the church,in the direction of the Paseodel Born, there is a smallsquare that holds specialhistoric significance, Fossar de

les Moreres (26). It used to bethe church cemetery a longtime ago, and it is said thatBarcelona’s war heroes ofSeptember 1714 were buriedhere after the city fell toFelipe V’s troops.

At the end of the avenue, wesee the former Mercat delBorn (27), a large ironworkand glass structure that oncehoused the central fruit andvegetable market up until1971. Behind the market isCiutadella Park (28), one ofthe city’s green “lungs”. Here, we also come across theMuseu de Zoologia (zoologymuseum) (29), a greenhousecalled the Hivernacle (30),

a navigable lake, and the seatof the Parlament de Catalunya(Regional Assembly) (31).

On nearby Calle Comerç, thereis an unusual museum calledthe Museu de la Xocolata (32),a treat for all chocolate-loversor anyone interested in thehistory of chocolate.

We set off for Calle Montcada,an area of narrow streetspopulated by stately mansions.Mandatory here is a visit tothe Museu Picasso (33), ajewel of a museum housing amajor collection of Picasso’searly works, as well as somefrom other periods, such as Las Meninas series, inspired byVelázquez’s masterpiece.

Also on the same street, thereare two other interestingmuseums, namely, the MuseuTèxtil i d’Indumentària (34)

displaying textiles andgarments, and the MuseuBarbier-Mueller (35) of pre-Colombian art, installed inthe Palacio del Marqués de Llió,a lovely sixteenth-centurybuilding. The elegant old housesand mansions along the streetstir up visions of aristocratic lifein Barcelona centuries ago.

Today, it can be safely saidthat Barcelona has beenhappily reconciled with thesea. Even though Barcelona’shistory is intimately linked tothe Mediterranean Sea, it isalso true that the city turnedits back on the sea for a longtime. Activity in the portfocused on the traffic ofgoods, and the coastline was lined with abandonedfactories languishing by the railroad tracks. WhenBarcelona was chosen in 1986 to host the 25th SummerOlympic Games, the idea of opening the city up to the sea became a greatchallenge for municipalauthorities. The goal has been accomplished, and today the harbor has becomea port of call for cruise ships,

inaccessible beaches havebeen recovered, and thewaterfront has not onlybecome a haven for leisureand entertainment, but also aresidential area.

A tour should start at thebeginning, where great shipswere built in the Middle Agesfor maritime trade: the ReialsDrassanes (36) in Plaza Portalde la Pau. These medievalshipyards, an imposingexample of civil Gothicarchitecture, house the MuseuMarítim, a tribute to the seameriting a visit.

Rising in the center of thesquare is the cast-ironMonument to Columbus(see La Rambla route), with an elevator up to the narrowobservation gallery for abreathtaking view of theharbor and the city.

For a closer look at the sea,sightseers can go for a boatride around the port in thepopular “Golondrinas” (37). A promenade leads to the‘Maremagnum’ (38), a largeleisure and recreationalcomplex with a variety ofshops and restaurants. Here, we also find the ImaxOmnimax theater, as well asL’Aquàrium (39), a voyage toan underwater world.

We continue to Port Vell (40),opposite the Palau de Mar (41),a large brick building that hasbeen totally restored withdelightful outdoor terraces tosit back and savor a good meal.Another interesting alternativeis a visit to the modern,interactive museum of thecity’s history, called the Museud’Història de Catalunya.

From here, the Passeig Juande Borbón leads to thebeaches of Barceloneta (42),the fishermen’s quarter ofstraight narrow streets.Strolling along the waterfronton the Paseo Marítimo, we come to the PuertoOlímpico (43), the new marinathat extends to the twinskyscrapers: one a luxury hotel and the other, an officebuilding. A haven for variouswater sports, especially sailingat the Municipal SailingSchool, and an abundance of restaurants and bars makethis area one of the liveliestspots in the city. The port isalso the center of the VillaOlímpica (44), the newresidential area consisting ofover two thousand dwellingsand garden areas, whichcompletely transformed the

appearance of theneighborhood. A tall brickchimney stands proudlyamong the buildings and hasbeen preserved as a testimonyto the area’s industrial past.Likewise, the wood coveringthe grand central pergola onAvenida Icaria (45) calls tomind the old railroad tracksthat have been dismantled tomake way for newconstruction.

The rejuvenation efforts ofthe waterfront do not stophere but continue in thevicinity of Diagonal Mar (46),the venue for the UniversalForum of Cultures in 2004.New convention facilities,hotels, commercial centersand housing are planned.Nobody can doubt now thatBarcelona has opened up tothe sea and has regained itsMediterranean calling.

The Eixample

The Eixample is the districtoccupying the central area ofBarcelona. The urbanexpansion project was begunin the last third of thenineteenth century, accordingto the plan drawn up byIldefons Cerdà. Thedemolition of the medievalwalls that had beensuffocating the city enabledthis vast urban reform tocome about and involved theannexation of some formerlyindependent towns, such asthe current district of Gràcia.To get an idea of the scope ofthis endeavor, you need onlyto look at a map of the city tosee the large central square ofthe Eixample, extending fromthe old quarter to the distantresidential hubs, easily

Likewise, not onlywere grand public buildingsand elegant mansions erected,many small businesses, forexample, still preserve thecharacteristic features of thisstyle. A lengthy list ofmodernist works can beobtained with the ticket ofthe Ruta del Modernisme, a municipal initiative tofacilitate identifying andvisiting modernist buildingsand places of interest.

Before commencing our walkthrough the Eixample, wemust first stop off at the Palaude la Música Catalana (47),the supreme achievement ofmodernism which hasmasterfully combined applieddecorative arts witharchitecture. This concert hall,designed by Catalonianarchitect LluísDomènech i Montanerand built between1905 and 1908 as

permanent home of the OrfeóCatalà, is a symbol ofCatalonian culture, art andmusic. Even if you don’t havetickets for a concert, you canjoin one of the guided visitsto see this modernist treasure,declared World Heritage bythe UNESCO.

After strolling through thepedestrian shopping areaalong the streets of Comtaland Portal de l’Àngel, wecome to Plaza de Catalunya,the communications hubjoining the old city and theEixample. The boulevard ofPasseig de Gràcia is the mainthoroughfare. The first neo-Gothic houses encountered onthis walk give an idea of thearchitecture characteristic ofthe early twentieth century.Between the streets of Consell

Barcelona would not be thesame without the distinctivemark left by the works ofGaudí. Considered by many tobe the genius of modernism,the truth is Gaudí represents aseparate case and is in a classby himself. His architectureappears within the frameworkof the modernist period, butthe unique character of hiscreations and the introvertedand mystical personality ofthe architect himself set Gaudíapart from the rest of hiscontemporaries.

Antoni Gaudí was born in 1852into a family of boilermakercraftsmen in Reus in Tarragonaprovince. The time he spentobserving nature as well as the artisan work of his fatherwould leave an indelible markon the architect’s futurecreativity. Gaudí’s work is notonly the result of a runawayimagination, but also endless practical work andexperimentation with all types of materials, leading toinnovations in buildingstructures and sculptural formsunprecedented at the time.

A chronological list of Gaudí’sworks in Barcelona will givereaders an idea of theevolution of the greatarchitect.

Casa Vicens (55), at number18 Calle Carolines in theGràcia district, was the firstimportant work designed byGaudí, built between 1883and 1888. Commissioned bytile manufacturer ManuelVicens, its style was inspiredby Moorish Mudéjar art andartistically combines stone,brick and ceramic tiles. Thisearly house is privately ownedand can only be admired fromthe outside.

The pair of pavilions of FincaGüell (56) on Avinguda dePedralbes was commissionedby a wealthy, upper middleclass businessman, who wouldbecome Gaudí’s good friendand benefactor, Eusebi Güell,a name permanently linked tothe architect. Built at theentrance to the estate, thepavilions were intended forthe stable and guardhouse.They now house the offices ofthe Gaudí Chair of thePolytechnic University ofCatalonia. The impressivewrought iron gate isparticularly eye-catching, withits fierce dragon “standingguard” over the entrance tothe garden of Hesperides.

Palau Güell (57), on Calle Noude la Rambla, is an opulentmansion Gaudí constructed asa residence between 1886 and1888 for his most prominentpatron, Count Eusebi Güell.

From several blocks away, wecan make out the towers ofthe spectacular Templo de laSagrada Familia (See Gaudíroute). If we take AvingudaGaudí, the middle of which isa pedestrian walkway, wecome to one of the mostimpressive modernistensembles: Hospital de laSanta Creu i Sant Pau (54), a public hospital designed by Domènech i Montaner. It occupies a plot equal tonine city blocks of theEixample. Forty-eightpavilions are distributedamong the spacious gardenareas for visitors to walkthrough (without having tobe a patient). Check times ofguided visits to this WorldHeritage site.

At number 442 AvingudaDiagonal is the Casa Comalat(51) by Salvador Valeri, with astriking rear façade on Callede Còrsega and crowned witha hat that is reminiscent of aharlequin.

Continuing along Diagonal,we run into the imposing CasaTerrades (52) by Puig iCadafalch. This medievalpalatial building occupies anentire triangular block. The various pointed towerscrowning the edifice haveprompted its popularnickname of “Casa de lesPunxes” (House of Points). At number 108 Paseo de SantJoan stands another mansionby the same architect, CasaMacaya (53). It belongs to “la Caixa”Foundation and is open to the public.

Theresan school continues tobe a primary and secondaryschool and has the privilege ofbearing the stamp of thegenius architect, as well asboasting a masterful interiordistribution of light.

At number 48 Calle Casp, wefind Casa Calvet (59), finishedin 1899. Although it had to besqueezed between olderblocks of houses, Gaudí’s mostconventional building stillshows typical Gaudian-styleelements.

The Church of Colònia Güell,twelve kilometers fromBarcelona, is considered bymany to be one of Gaudí’smost original works. Althoughthe project was begun in1898, work was interrupted in1917, and only the crypt wascompleted. The architecturalcomplexity of the ribbedhyperboloid vault and theinclined columns give it an

unexpected mysteriousfeeling. The shape and colors of the windows arereminiscent of butterflywings. Nature was always agreat source of inspiration forGaudí.

Güell Park (60) was originallyenvisioned as a residentialEnglish-style garden city,hence the word “park”, butthe initiative was unsuccessfuland only a few model houseswere built. One of them isnow used as the Gaudí House-Museum and wasinhabited at one time byGaudí himself. Güell donatedthe land to the City in 1923,and since then it has been apublic park. The imaginativeintegration of architectonicelements in a natural settingholds in store myriad visualsurprises for the visitor.

Casa Batlló (61), on thefamous city block known asthe “block of discord” ofPasseig de Gràcia, emphasizesthe sculptural and decorativeaspects of Gaudianarchitecture. Although theedifice was not actually builtby Gaudí, he completelytransformed it in 1906.

Casa Milà or La Pedrera (62)stands on a corner lot ofPasseig de Gràcia as if it werea gigantic sculpture in whichcurves prevail. This residentialapartment building wasGaudí’s last work of civilarchitecture. Built between1906 and 1910, it wascommissioned by the textileindustrialist Pere Milà. A ticketincludes a visit to the startlingloft formed by 270 parabolicarches of flat-laid brick, theincredible multi-leveled roof with warrior-likechimneys and ventilators, and

one of the large apartmentsdecorated in early twentiethcentury style. The informativeexhibit in the loft helpsconvey the scope and geniusof Gaudí’s work. To say a visit here is worthwhile isdefinitely an understatement.

The Basilica of the HolyFamily (Templo de la SagradaFamilia) (63) was undeniablyGaudí’s masterwork to whichhe devoted more than fortyyears of his life, from 1883 tohis untimely death in 1926. He began the fourtowers of theNativityfaçade, an amazinggospel put

to stone and ceramics, butlived to see only one of themfinished. Construction on thisemblematic and monumentaltemple continues today,financed exclusively byanonymous donations andcontributions from visitors.The final project consists ofeight towers, the tallest risingto a height of 170 meters. The sheer magnitude ofGaudí’s project has made theSagrada Familia the city’s mostfamous landmark. Its masterarchitect was said to have

remarked: “Barcelonawill be known for

this temple”.

huge central dome was builtin 1929 and remodeled shortlybefore the Olympics. It housesthe Museu Nacional d’Art deCatalunya (MNAC), apermanent collection of

outstanding Romanesque andGothic art. As if this were notenough, the museum alsoorganizes interestingtemporary exhibits. Theattractive Oval Hall is often

The high hill of Montjuïc, anauthentic green “lung”, is areference point for culture,sports and entertainment inthe city. Theaters andmuseums, sports facilities,fairground pavilions,fountains and gardens, makethis spot an obvious meetingpoint and place to visit. The evening“performance” of water,music, color and light of theMagic Fountain (65) in thissetting is a stunning spectacle.It operates from June toSeptember on Thursday,Friday, Saturday and Sundayevenings and from October toApril on Friday and Saturdayevenings.

World’s Fair, today it is acenter for recreation andtraditional crafts.

A fun way to get to Montjuïchill is from the Metro stationof Paral·lel. From here, amodern Funicular (70) railwaytrundles up the hill to Avenidade Miramar. Two options arenow possible: the first is a visitto the Fundació Miró andAnella Olímpica, and theother is to go up to the castle.To visit the latter, all you haveto do is cross and go to thecable car station to catch theCableway (71) and climb intoone of the little red basketsthat will whisk you up to the fortress, Castillo deMontjuïc (72). The exhilaratingride affords spectacular viewsalong the way. If proceedingon foot is more appealing,definitely a more cultural andarchitecturally-oriented choice,look for Avenida de Miramarand the contemporary whitebuilding of the Fundació JoanMiró (73), a striking work bythe architect Josep Lluís Sert.

A visit to this museum willreveal the amazing work ofthis universal Catalonianartist, including a series ofsculptures outdoors on theterraces. In addition to thepermanent exhibition ofworks by Joan Miró, there isusually some type oftemporary exhibit ofcontemporary art.

At the same level as theMagic Fountain, at the startof Avinguda Marqués deComillas, we find twooutstanding buildings: one isthe excellent reconstructionof the Mies van der RohePavilion (67), designed by this architect for Germany’sexhibit at the 1929 World’sFair. Today this classicexample of rationalistarchitecture can still bevisited. Across the street from the pavilion, occupyingan entire block, is theCaixaForum (68). This newCultural Center of “la Caixa”

Foundation is installed in the former Casaramonatextile mill, built in 1911 by Josep Puig i Cadafalch. It is a splendid example of modernist industrialarchitecture. The sculpturalentrance to the Foundation,consisting of two steel “trees”supporting a plate-glass roof,is the work of Japanesearchitect Arata Isozaki. Go inside and discover thesurprises waiting in thiscultural center.

The same street leads to thePoble Espanyol (69), aninteresting mock villagebeckoning visitors to strollthrough its streets andsquares with full-scale replicasof architectural structuresfrom the different Spanishregions. Built also for the 1929

Montjuïc’s Magic Fountain

Tibidabo and CollserolaClose by is the complex calledthe Anillo Olímpico, epicenterof the 1992 Summer Games.Within this “Olympic Ring”,we find the Estadi Olímpic(74), stage of the magicalopening and closingceremonies and the track andfield events; the Palau SantJordi (75), a multi-purposebuilding and marvel of designand modern technology;Santiago Calatrava’s sculpturalTelecommunications Tower(76); the Piscines Picornell (77),swimming pools open to thepublic with “refreshing”evening film sessions in thesummertime; and the seat ofthe INEFC (78), the sportsuniversity designed byarchitect Ricardo Bofill. All ofthese facilities were settings ofthe 1992 Olympics, memoriesof which can be relived byvisiting the Galeria Olímpica(79), located in one of thewings of the Estadi Olímpic.

Plant and garden lovers may wish to visit Montjuïc’sseveral attractive gardens.

Of particular interest are theBotanical Gardens (JardínBotánico) (80). Consult theguide published by theInstitut de Parcs i Jardins.

Lastly, a world of theater andcultural entertainment isanother good reason to cometo Montjuïc. On Calle Lleidastands the renovated Palaud’Esports (81), as well as theCiutat del Teatre (82), acomplex comprising the newsite of the Teatre Lliure andMercat de les Flors, inaddition to the Institut del Teatre. On nearby Paseo de Santa Madrona, the Museu d’Arqueologia deCatalunya (83) takes visitorson a journey to distantperiods of Catalan history. A little further on and wecome to the gardens of theTeatre Grec (84), an open-airtheater that lends its name to a summer festival ofperforming arts. (See the section on CulturalActivities.)

Approached from the sea,Barcelona appears to wear a luxuriant green crowndiscernible amid the woodsbordering the northwesternpart of the city. These are theCollserola hills, the highestpoint being Tibidabo, easilyidentifiable by a white basilicaon the top.

Mount Tibidabo has been afavorite excursion destinationever since an amusement parkwas built there with afunicular to take visitors tothe top. The unsurpassedviews from the summit giveforth a multi-colored city,unfolding below andstretching to the sea. Thenumerous attractions in thelarge metropolitan park of

Collserola have turned thisspot into a favorite for thosewho wish to take a breatherfrom the asphalt but at thesame time feel the beat of thecity at their feet.

At the start of Avinguda delTibidabo, we can begin byhopping on the Tramvia Blau(85), a century-old bluestreetcar that continues tooperate as if a hundred yearshad not gone by. At the endof this ride, another charmingmeans of transportationcontinues the rest of the wayto the top, the TibidaboFunicular (86). Looming abovethe Plaza del Tibidabo, themajestic Templo del SagratCor (87) is surmounted by agolden figure of the SacredHeart with an observationplatform at the foot.

The gigantic Collserola Tower(89) stands elegantly on thehillside between Tibidabo andVallvidrera, a modern feat ofengineering designed by SirNorman Foster and erected asa communications tower forthe Olympics. An elevatortakes visitors to theobservation platform 112meters high and 560 metersabove sea level for anastounding view.

Of all the entrances toBarcelona by road, the AP-2that runs into AvenidaDiagonal is by far the mostelegant and cosmopolitanroute. It is here, in thePedralbes district, where the A-2 merges with the city’s mainthoroughfare and the campusof Barcelona’s universitybegins. Avenida Diagonalextends for twelve kilometersthrough the city until reachingthe sea. The stretch known asthe “high zone” has a distinctmodern and elegant feel, with shops and financialinstitutions. Instead ofembarking on another walkingtour, this time we will pointout the places of interest to befound in the area.

The magnificent Monastery ofSanta Maria de Pedralbes (90)is a Gothic ensemble of

extraordinary beauty, an oasistucked away from the hustleand bustle, where time seemsto stand still. Founded in 1326 by Queen Elisenda deMontcada, the monastery waserected in the midst of a largequarry of white rock, “piedrasalbas”, hence the termPedralbes. Today, a smallcommunity of Clarisas nuns(Poor Clares) still inhabits onewing, but the major part isdevoted to a museum that canbe visited. A wonderful three-story cloister stands out alongwith murals painted by FerrerBassa that decorate thechapels. Also on display inthese solemn surroundings is aselection of works from theThyssen-BornemiszaCollection including somepaintings by Fra Angelico,Rubens and Canaletto, as wellas other great masters.

In the midst of the universitycampus area of Diagonal,scattered with diverse

buildings and schools of theUniversity of Barcelona (UB),we find the Palau Reial dePedralbes (91), built in 1924 as the royal residence of themonarch Alfonso XIII.Surrounded by enchantinggardens just perfect for astroll, the inside of the palacehouses two interesting andunusual museums: the Museude les Arts Decoratives (TheMuseum of Decorative Arts)and the Museu de Ceràmica,which possesses historicalIslamic ceramics, as well ascontemporary pieces byPicasso and Miró.

On the other side of AvenidaDiagonal, in the neighboringdistrict of Les Corts, soccer fanshave their shrine. Here we findCamp Nou (92), Europe’slargest stadium, given a five-star rating by the UEFA,with a capacity for 100,000spectators. In the museumshowcases, in the Museu F.C.Barcelona President Núñez,fans can appreciate theimpressive record of one of themost successful teams in theworld, including the title wonat the historic European Cupfinal at Wembley. A visit to themuseum also includes a viewof the stadium from thepresidential box.

Geologicallly, the mountainmassif of Montserrat (literally“serrated mountain”) is animpressive mass of rock withpeculiar rounded shapes risingwith unusual force betweenBages plain and the coastaldepression, some sixtykilometers west of Barcelona.A Benedictine monastery wasfounded in 1025 in thisnatural spot of extraordinarybeauty. The image of LaMoreneta, found hidden in amountain cave according tolegend, has been worshipedsince the twelfth century.

Throughout centuries, theshrine of Montserrat has beenand continues to be today asymbol of Catalan identity, amajor pilgrimage destinationand a spiritual center of thefirst order. The sixteenth-century Basilica, inhabited bya community of monksinvolved in intense cultural

activity, rises next to themonastery. Inside, thousandspass in silent devotion by thesmall chapel of the Virgin.Similar admiration is given tothe singing of the Escolanía,the oldest boys’ choir inEurope. A total of fifty giftedyoung voices sing daily theSalve and Montserrat’spopular hymn, Virolai. Hand-picked at the age of ten, theboys live for four years in themonastery and receiveschooling and musicaltraining. With the exceptionof July and a few days duringChristmas, the Escolania canbe heard every day at onep.m. after mass and in theevening at seven o’clock aftercommunity prayers.

‘Ora et labora’ is the motto ofthe order of St. Benedictwhich presides over life at theMonastery of Montserrat.Study and research in areas ofhistory, music and religion arethe focus of the intellectualendeavors of the nearly eightymembers composing the

Benedictine community. The first printing press inCatalonia was installed here in 1499, and since then, theabbey has continued topublish all types of books and magazines. Particularlynoteworthy is the Bible ofMontserrat, a magnificenttranslation of the sacred textswith notes and commentariesby the monks.

The sanctuary grounds, 725meters above sea level, arecomprised of a monastery anda basilica, as well as numerousservices for visitors. TheMuseu de Montserrat housesan archeological and artisticcollection of great value. The recent opening of apermanent exhibit about the mountain’s naturalsurroundings, the history ofMontserrat and monastery lifeis very informative and helpsvisitors to learn about thissacred place.

Excursions and hikes in thisunique spot hold more than afew surprises along the way.The well-marked hilly path tothe Holy Cave called SantaCueva, one and a halfkilometers long, is studdedwith fifteen sculptural groupsrepresenting the mysteries ofthe rosary. A cable car alsotransports visitors comfortablyup to the sacred cave.

Two hermitage chapelsperched on the highest pointsof the mountain range offerspectacular views: San Juanand San Jerónimo. Both havetheir own cable cars to ascendthe mountain in an almostvertical ride. Montserrat, thesacred mountain of Catalonia,is a symbol of spirituality,Catalan sentiment, as well asof religion, culture andnature. A visit to this magicalplace is an unforgettableexperience.

If you travel to Barcelona byair and arrive at El Prat airport,you can probably catch aglimpse of the extensive beachof Castelldefels. This resort ofaround 50,000 inhabitantsgrew up around the castle ofFels, which gave its name tothe town, now an importantresidential and tourist center.Many people live inCastelldefels and commute towork in Barcelona due to theirproximity and the good publictransport available.Castelldefels is only twentyminutes from the city, andtrains run frequently betweenthe two points.

Lining the five kilometers offine sandy beaches arenumerous houses, apartments,hotels and restaurants, inaddition to a series of well-equipped camp sites by thesea. An artificial waterway1,200 meters long was builtfor the 1992 Olympics, theCanal Olímpico, where thekayak races where held in itstranquil water. Rowing cannow be added to the alreadywide range of possibilities forrecreation here.

A short distance fromCastelldefels is the captivatingseaside resort of Sitges. Itpioneered in tourism at theend of the nineteenth centurywhen it became a haven forcreative artists and writers.The oldest part of the townand the most interesting isknown as the Vila Vella, whichoccupies a rocky promontorybetween the beach of SantSebastià and the extensivebeach of La Ribera. At oneend rises the picturesqueparish church, the mostcharacteristic image of thetown and the one usuallyportrayed on canvas or withwatercolors by countlesspainters. Vilafranca del Penedés, theregion’s principal town, isconsidered the wine capital,while the neighboring townof Sant Sadurní d’Anoia isknown as the “cava” capital.Vilafranca’s center reflects arich and dynamic urban life,where it is possible to see fineexamples of modernistarchitecture and elegantmansions. One of them housesthe Museu del Vi, wherevisitors to this museum aretaken on a journey through

the history of wine and itsproduction, with wine tastingincluded. Amphorae andother antique artifacts arepreserved, as well asagricultural implementsrelated to vine growing.

Ninety percent of all the“cava” produced in Spain,some 130 million bottles peryear, is produced in SantSadurní d’Anoia. For arelatively small municipality,this means practically itsentire economic activity. Oneof the most importantsparkling wine producers isCavas Codorniu. A visit totheir facilities is a treat.Located in the outskirts of thetown, it is a handsomeexample of modernistarchitecture by the architectPuig i Cadafalch, who totallyremodeled the old farm ofCan Codorniu. A visit includesa mini-train ride throughsome of the endlessunderground cellars wherethe bottles are stored.Another of the famouswineries is Caves Freixenet,founded in 1889. Next door to Maricel palace, wefind Cau Ferrat, residence andstudio of the versatile writer-painter Santiago Rusiñol, ameeting place for numerousCatalonian modernist artists atthe close of the nineteenthcentury. In his home at CauFerrat, now a museum, Rusiñolgathered his collection ofartistic iron, ceramics andpaintings, and organized hisfamous modernist festivals,with exhibits and avant-gardetheatrical and musicalperformances.

Sitges’ third museum islocated in the heart of thetown, the Museu Romàntic.Installed in an elegantnineteenth century house, themuseum displays the furnitureand effects of a wealthy homeduring the Romantic period. It also houses an enchantingcollection of antique dolls.

The two-kilometer La Riberabeach and palm-fringedpromenade running alongsideis one of the town’s biggestattractions. This areaconcentrates numerous bars,restaurants and hotelscatering to the lively socialand nightlife in the town. Theliberal and tolerant attitudecharacterizing this area has

However,Terrassa offers visitors aninteresting architectonic legacyas well. There are three mainplaces that should not bemissed when visiting the city:the Masia Freixa, the Museude la Ciència i la Tècnica deCatalunya, and the ensemblemade up of the three pre-Romanesque churches of Sant Pere.

The amazing churches arecomposed of three robustly-constructed old stone buildingserected between the eighthand tenth centuries. The Masía Freixa is a modernistarchitectural gem withunmistakable Gaudian airs,although it is the work of localarchitect Lluís Muncunill. Thisisolated house, located in SantJordi park, is currently the siteof Terrassa’s Conservatory ofMusic.

Special mention merits theVapor Aymerich, Amat i Jover building, Terrasa’saforementioned Museum ofScience and Technology. Thisformer large textile mill is oneof the finest examples ofmodernist industrialarchitecture. One of its mainfeatures is a succession ofarches through which sunlightstreams, naturally illuminatingthe interior main floor. Othersections of the museum housetemporary exhibits, as well aspermanent displays about thetextile industry and steamengines. Vic and Ripoll The nickname of "Ciutat delsSants" (City of Saints) brings tomind the various saints whohave been a part of the town,such as St. Michael of theSaints, St. Anthony Mary Claret,St. Joachina de Vedruna, toname a few. Vic is also thebirthplace of the great Catalanphilosopher Jaume Balmes.There is a museum devotedentirely to the author. TheAuditori, by the architectRafael Moneo, hascontributed to therevitalization of the area ofGlòries.
