COMMANDER’S CORNER

FLYING EAGLES

Squadron Commander

Lt Col Ilana Mor

November has been an incredibly busy month. It has

included the Veterans Supper, Turkey Trot, the Commanders

Call/CAC Meeting, the Cadet Change of Command Ceremony,

and work to improve the facilities. How appropriate that the last

Thursday in November was Thanksgiving, a time to stop and

reflect upon the goodness of our lives.

The Veterans Supper is an annual event which is hosted

by the Bartow County Veterans Appreciation Committee. The

banquet room at the Conference Center was completely filled,

and the veterans, ranging from those who served during WWII to

those who served in more current wars, were honored for their

service to the country, The Grand Master of the Masons, the

featured speaker, spoke quite eloquently about service to the

country. Cadets and Senior Officers from GA129 paid respect to

the veterans by helping with the meals.

Turkey Trot is the annual 5K race that is sponsored by the

Bartow County United Way. It is always a very successful event

and we are always happy to lend our services for crowd control

and parking cars.

The GAWG Commanders Call/CAC Meeting was held at

the Aviation Museum in Warner Robins. There was a large

turnout of Commanders, Deputy Commanders, and for those

enrolled in the Command Specialty Track. Many topics were

discussed, lunch was provided, and the head of the CAC gave a

briefing of the CAC meeting. We all left the Museum at about

1500 hrs. The beginning of the return trip was smooth; however,

due to construction on I-75, we were stuck in bumper-to-bumper

traffic for over three hours. We arrived home safe, but very tired!

The Cadet Change of Command Ceremony took place at

the Squadron. The MC was Lt Col Mor, the Guidon Bearer was

C/CMSgt Ryan Drawver, the outgoing Commander was C/2Lt

Danny Carpenter, and the incoming Commander was C/1Lt Chris

Cochran. C/2Lt Carpenter did an outstanding job as Cadet

Commander, and we know that C/1Lt Cochran will do the same.

VETERANS DAY

Veterans Day is an annual American holiday honoring

military veterans. It is both a federal and state holiday, and is

usually observed on the 14th

day of November.

In other parts of the world, November 11th is also celebrated

as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in honor of the anniversary

of the signing of the Armistice which ended World War I. The

major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th

hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in the year 1918 when the

Germans signed the Armistice.

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed an

Armistice Day for November 11, 1919. The United States Congress

passed a concurrent resolution seven years later on June 4, 1926

requesting that the President issue another proclamation to observe

November 11th with appropriate ceremonies.

On May 13, 1938, an Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a)

was approved. The 11th of November is a legal holiday which is to

be celebrated each year as Armistice Day.

On November 8, 1954, Congress amended the act, and the

holiday has been known as Veterans Day since that time.

Due to the fact that Christmas falls on the fourth Thursday of December, it is necessary to

adjust the Cadet Program Schedule as follows:

Week One - Cadet Physical Fitness Testing (12/4)

Week Two - Aerospace Education (12/11)

Week Three - Character Development (12/18)

In January, there will not be a meeting on Thursday, 1 January due to the fact that it is New

Year's Day. Since there are five Thursdays in January, the normal schedule will resume on

8 January 2015. Note that PT and Leadership have been switched.

Week One- Safety Briefing, PT

Week Two- Leadership

Week Three-Aerospace Education

Week 4-Character Development.

At present, the scheduled workday is 6 December for those who will not be at the SAREX.

Hopefully, step-by-step, by working together we will improve our facilities.

The upcoming events are:

6 December - SAREX and workday at Squadron

13 December – Wreaths across America/Group I Commanders Call

20 December - United Way Xmas Luncheon (7 – 12)

10 January - Annual Awards & Holiday Party – details TBA.

IG Inspection scheduled for February.

6 – 8 March – Leadership/ES Training @ Catoosa

MARK YOUR CALENDARS

“Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force, is a nonprofit

organization with more than 61,000 members nationwide, operating a fleet of 550

aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs 90 percent of continental U.S.

inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination

Center and was credited by the AFRCC with saving 54 lives in fiscal year 2011. Its

volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and counter-drug missions at

the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in

aerospace education and serve as mentors to more than 27,000 young people currently

participating in CAP cadet programs. CAP received the World Peace Price in 2011 and

has been performing missions for America for over 70 years. CAP also participates in

Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the

sacrifices of U.S. military veterans.”

22 NOVEMBER

UNITED WAY ANNUAL TURKEY TROT / WORK AT THE SQUADRON/NEW CADET STAFF

There was an incredible turnout for the Turkey Trot: 16 Cadets and 9 Senior Members. The

United Way reps were very appreciative. Although it was a cold morning, everyone

successfully “pushed through.”

At the end of the event, several Cadets returned to the Squadron, and finished up the day by

shoveling dirt. This is all part of the effort to improve our facilities.

After lunch, Cadet Commander Cochran worked with his Officers and Chiefs to assign

command and support positions for the new Cadet Staff.

It was a very successful day for GA128.

Participants included:

Cadets: Austin Cagle, Danny Carpenter, Christopher Cochran, Johnathon DiCara, Ryan

Drawver, Ashley Goins, Katie Goins, Justin Kiser, Noah Little, Noah Livingston, Austin

Price, Pearson Pruitt, Andrea Richardson, Parker Richardson, Angelica Schumacher, Jacob

Schumacher, and James Schumacher.

Senior Members: Lt Col Jim Card, 1Lt Gillian DiCara, 2Lt John DiCara, 1Lt Brent Drawver,

1Lt Shawn Drawver, Capt Marcos Palafox, 2Lt Eric Richardson, 1Lt Barbie Schumacher, and

Capt Don Schumacher.

THANKSGIVING BY LT COL ILANA MOR (11/97)

Busy with our everyday cycle,

Caught up with responsibilities,

Rushing through our days in a blur of activity,

We rarely stop to reflect on the goodness of our lives.

Fortune smiles upon us.

We do not know hunger.

We live in homes that provide us shelter from the elements.

We do not live under the cruel whims of a dictator.

We have the opportunity to succeed if we work diligently.

We are able to surround ourselves with family and friends.

We have a lot of control over the outcome of our lives.

At the inception of this country,

Overwhelming challenges faced the pioneers.

Survival of life and limb were at the top of the list

As these pilgrims bowed their heads in thanksgiving.

Today,

We do not work the land for our survival.

Our challenges and struggles are of a different nature.

But…like the pilgrims of old,

It is appropriate to bow our heads in thanksgiving.
