Investigadores del MIT ponen sensores en el alcantarillado de laciudadPublicada en www.theguardian.com, 27/03/2016.

Here in this small room within the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, I am making theacquaintance of Luigi. As explorers go, he lacks charisma – not for him a winning smile, witty catchphrase and firmhandshake. But then, Luigi isn’t your typical pioneer. He’s a robot. And it isn’t curios he collects. It’s sewage. At firsttake, it seems an unlikely subject for Luigi’s creators – the Senseable City Lab – to embrace. Along twisting corridors, sleek black panels showcase the group’s off-the-wall ideas: LED-clad micro helicopters, location-tracked trash, theCopenhagen wheel – a motorised hub for bicycles that won a James Dyson prize. I am almost surprised to find thelab didn’t invent the flat white. “We usually say our top projects should be both in Nature and in MoMA [Museum ofModern Art],” admits the lab’s director, Professor Carlo Ratti, when we meet in his office, a room dominated by a vasttable covered with piles of paper.

El empoderamiento de la Energía Solar a nivel mundialPublicada en weforum.org, 11/03/2016.

It's the largest power plant of its kind. Built in the Moroccan desert, the $765million Noor-Ouarzazate complex is set to power over a million homes. Even afew years ago, a project of this scale in the North African desert would almostcertainly have been an oil or gas power station. But the Noor-Ouarzazatecomplex runs on the power of the sun. It is a sign of how far solar power hascome that such large infrastructure projects are now being built. That the schemewas partly funded through a loan from the Word Bank also shows how solar isbecoming mainstream.

A novel stochastic framework based on fuzzy cloud theory formodeling uncertainty in the micro-gridsPublicada en ScienceDirect _TELECO, 18/02/2016.

This article proposes a novel stochastic framework based on cloud theory to handle the uncertainty effects in theoptimal operation of microgrids. In respect of the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method, cloud theory can containmore uncertainty of the problem using the cloud drops. The main concept is to include the fuzziness and randomnessof qualitative parameters and then change them to the quantitative form. Due to the high difficulty and nonlinearity ofthe problem, a new optimization algorithm based on krill herd (KH) is devised to search the problem space globally.

A low-carbon transport infrastructure in Taiwan based on theimplementation of energy-saving measuresPublicada en ScienceDirect_LED, 18/02/2016.

Transport is the lifeblood of a nation’s economy. Because fossil fuels are being gradually depleted and globalwarming phenomena are becoming more and more serious, the aim of this article is to study a low-carbon transportinfrastructure based on existing energy efficiency indices and green transport policy formulated by TaiwaneseDepartment of Transportation. First, via data collection and analysis, we observed that small passenger cars andlarge trucks are the largest energy users in the transport sector due to their high energy intensities and largetransport volumes. Therefore, the energy-conserving potentials of these vehicles are the focus of this study.

Optical performance of efficient blue/near UV nitropyridine-conjugated anthracene (NAMA) based light emitting diodePublicada en ScienceDirect_LED, 18/02/2016.

9-[(5-nitropyridin-2-aminoethyl) iminiomethyl]-anthracene (NAMA) wassynthesized for the first time from the reaction between 9-antracenecarboxaldehyde and 2-(2-aminoethylamino)-5-nitropyridine under mild reactionconditions. The structure of the nitropyridine-conjugated anthracene (NAMA) wascharacterized using 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and elemental analysis techniques.

A low-cost UWB sensor node powered by a piezoelectric harvesteror solar cellsPublicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 18/02/2016.

We propose an autonomous battery-less wireless sensor node that combines on a single printed circuit board anultra-wideband (UWB) transmitter and its printed antenna, together with a piezoelectric cantilever and a solar cellarray to harvest vibrations and light energy, respectively. The co-design of the solar cell array with the printed UWBantenna allows a prototype size of only 85 × 35 mm2, i.e., less than 65% of a credit card size. Low-cost is achievedby using inexpensive FR4 dual-layer substrate, standard-ceramic capacitors, and low-cost harvesters. The vibrationalenergy scavenger is fabricated at the wafer scale based on commercially available bulk polycrystalline LeadZirconate Titanate (PZT), and the solar cells are fabricated by depositing amorphous-Si on 0.5 mm thick glasssubstrate.

Eficiencia Energética y Smart CitiesAn intersection-to-intersection travel time estimation and routesuggestion approach using vehicular ad-hoc networkPublicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 18/02/2016.

Estimation of time-dependent travel time in an urban network is a challenging task due to the interrupted nature ofvehicular traffic flows. A novel concept of intersection-to-intersection (I2I) real-time travel time estimation (TTE) androute suggestion model based on vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) technology is proposed for enabling the smarttransportations in smart city.

Model predictive energy control of ventilation for undergroundstationsPublicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 18/02/2016.

Smart building systems are opening up new markets, nevertheless the implementation of these novel technologiesstill lacks suitable and proven whole engineering solutions in complex buildings. This paper presents a detailedapproach for the ventilation control of an underground space, as an example of application of the developed solutionto a very harsh environment but also highly demanding in terms of energy consumption. The underground spaces arecharacterized by a particular thermal behavior, because of the continuous and huge thermal exchange they have withthe outside, via the openings and the ground surrounding the majority of the building.

Opportunistic communication in smart city: Experimental insightwith small-scale taxi fleets as data carriersPublicada en ScienceDirect_Publications, 18/02/2016.

How to deliver data to, or collect data from the hundreds of thousands of sensors and actuators integrated in “things”spread across virtually every smart city streets (garbage cans, storm drains, advertising panels, etc.)? The answer tothe question is neither straightforward nor unique, given the scale of the issue, the lack of a single administrativeentity for such tiny devices (arguably run by a multiplicity of distinct and independent service providers), and the costand power concerns that their direct connectivity to the cellular network might pose.

City attachment and use of urban services: Benefits for smart cities

Publicada en sciencedirect.com, 01/02/2016.

Increasing uses of urban services enhance urban management efficiency and also favor social, environmental, andeconomic sustainability. This research analyzes how users' city attachment levels and other personal determinantscontribute to their uses of urban services. Focusing on the city of Zaragoza (Spain), the empirical study reveals thatpersonal attitudes and needs, possession of user cards, and education levels have positive influences on the use ofurban services. City attachment affects use indirectly through attitude. This study also presents some innovativeapproaches to advance the development of smart cities and suggests implications for managing citizen-orientedurban services to achieve higher living standards.
