Esta publicación es en verdad

especial...

Tengo un poco más de 30

años y para mí la NAVIDAD

ha ido cambiando de matices;

desde los más brillantes y

profundos, hasta los más nos-

tálgicos y efímeros. En navi-

dad recordamos con mucha

devoción el nacimiento de

Jesús, y junto al árbol o al

pesebre y en el dulce calor de

la familia podemos disfrutar

de momentos que perduran

en el alma, en la mente y en

el corazón, siendo esto ga-

nancia para nuestras vidas y

convirtiéndose en matices que

brillan en el tiempo.

Sean pérdidas o ganancias,

matices brillantes o no tanto,

lo que realmente importa es

nuestra fe y esperanza, pues

sólo con estos dones podre-

mos encontrar el verdadero

sentido que tiene la NAVI-

DAD.

Otro motivo que convierte

esta edición en una publica-

ción muy especial, es la parti-

cipación de algunos estudian-

tes de los grados noveno a

once que bajo la orientación

de la docente Liliana Zuluaga

han escrito en inglés sobre

diversos temas realmente

importantes e inspiradores

para nuestras vidas, familia y

sociedad.

En esta edición número 4, El

estudiante Gabriel David

Ospina nos comparte su ar-

tículo “Peace Culture =

Peaceful individuals”. Es-

pero disfruten cada una de

sus líneas y queden atentos

de quién será el próximo estu-

diante que en Enero nos de-

leitará con sus palabras escri-

tas. (Ver páginas 2 y 4)

The results of the plebiscite and the

current attempts to reform a new

peace agreement is in trend within

Colombian people. Despite the differ-

ences of opinions between the “yes”

and “no”, we all seek the achieve-

ment of peace. It is up to us to unify

as people, overcome our disagree-

ments and start living according to

our goals, to adopt a peace culture.

What is peace culture?

Peace culture is an educational pro-

ject with the objective of teaching

students a non-violent alternative to

solve conflicts, acquiring a healthy

environment. But in order to teach

and to make sure most of the stu-

dents are going to use these culture

(because you can´t force anyone to

make use of it), we must learn what

peace is exactly and what it impli-

cates.

Peace has three basic components:

Peace Culture = Peaceful individuals

Página 2 BOLETÍN BIBLIOTECA

You may think that the components

contradict themselves, or it might be

confusing but if we start using them

we will start noticing results for creat-

ing a non-violent environment and

evidence that they are cohesive with

each other.

How can one person contribute to

a peaceful community?

A lot of people have the dream to

change the world. We think that we

should seek to change ourselves. Is

way easier and less time consuming.

Besides, that is actually the way to

change the world, one person at the

time. The thing is that the only one

that is able to change people’s minds

is ourselves.

If we perceive something valuable,

we are motivated to pursue it. What

we are trying to do is to motivate peo-

ple by showing them the importance

of being accepted and treated as hu-

man being. That is why we said “most

of students” and “can’t force” at the

beginning, because is unfair to force

someone to do something they don’t

want to do, even if what we want

them to do is for the greater and their

own good.

The definition of harmony can be

found if you see it from the musical

perspective. Harmony in a song or

musical piece can be found when two

or more notes are played at the same

time, even if those notes are played

by different instruments. Applying this

concept, lets change the word “notes”

with personalities and the word

“instruments” with people. Harmony

means that several people are able to

coexist in the same community and

that despite having personality con-

trasts, they are able to build a solid

relationship.

Justice is necessary to live in a

peaceful community because part of

peace is the protection of rights. Hu-

man rights were made so people

have a legal way to say that they are

as human as his fellow. The violation

of human rights indicates that there

are people that think other humans

deserve less than them. That is a

form of degradation and humiliation.

In this cases, peace depends on ex-

ternal factors (for the victims).

Respect is a very important compo-

nent, not only for everybody’s peace,

but also for your own. Respect is one

that takes a lot of effort, because it is

about differentiation. Unlike harmony,

is not only about combining the dis-

tinctive features of each individual,

but understanding that they have in-

dependent interests and that they do

not have to be exactly like you emo-

tionally. However, the hardest part is

to respect people that are not re-

spectful.

We have been saying that peace

culture is in favor of your own bene-

fit because most of the times, you

are the one who is not contributing

to your own peace. People get stuck

on the situation outside, but there is

a phrase that says “if there is a situ-

ation that is uncomfortable, change

it. If you can´t change it, change

yourself”. Don´t let the pride get in

the way of solving a situation such

as who has to forgive who. If you

find your tranquility more important

than your pride, then take a step

towards it.

People tend to think that justice is if

you commit a crime, you should be

punished according to the serious-

ness of the crime (in other words,

“an eye for an eye”). However,

there is an universal rule: “Do to

others as you want them to do to

you”. It is related to the justice

component of peace, since when

people’s rights are being vulnerat-

ed, what is correct is to defend

them, because you would want

someone to defend you too.

Nevertheless, we need to respect

the others who are not respectful.

They chose to be that way and they

might not change their mind. But that

doesn’t stop the willing to defend

those who are week. The best way

for defending those who are being

vulnerated, is to teach them to de-

fend themselves
