Message from Father Robert:

When I was a deacon, my weekend assignment was at St. Philip Neri here in the Bronx on the Grand Concourse. When I started there, I only knew little about him; namely, that he was an Italian saint whose heart physically grew. It was only during my last months in preparation for the priesthood that I thought I should get to know him since I was serving at a church named after him. I did my best to read as much as possible about his life, and during my retreat I came across a book entitled Philip Neri: Fire of Joy by Paul Türks. In my opinion, it was the right book to pick up at the right time because while preparing for my Ordination reading that book served as a model of how to live one’s life as a joyful priest.

The reason why that book serves as a model of how to live out one’s vocation as a joyful priest is simply because St. Philip Neri himself was a joyful priest. Everywhere he went he was loved and became known as the “Apostle of Joy.” This can possibly be attributed to an important event in his life. We are told that in the year 1544 on the Vigil of Pentecost he was praying fervently for the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, and while he was praying what appeared to him to be a ball of fire entered his mouth and rested in his heart. It was this event that enlarged his heart physically as well as gave him the Gifts that he asked for. It is also said that when he would hear confession or give spiritual direction warmth would emanate from his chest.

As we conclude the Easter season with Pentecost Sunday, let us ask God to bestow on us the Gifts of the Holy Spirit so that like St. Philip Neri we become joyful servants filled with the Fire of His Love. One of the drawbacks of this shutdown was that among other things we had to postpone Confirmation which would have been celebrated this past week. We look forward to a future date to be determined by the Bishop. As of now everything is the same from what I wrote last week. Cuando era diácono, mi tarea de fin de semana era en St. Philip Neri aquí en el Bronx en el Grand Concourse. Cuando comencé allí, solo sabía poco sobre él; a saber, que él era un santo italiano cuyo corazón creció físicamente. Fue solo durante mis últimos meses en preparación para el sacerdocio que pensé que debería conocerlo ya que estaba sirviendo en una iglesia que lleva su nombre. Fue este evento el que le agrandó el corazón físicamente y le dio los regalos que pidió. También se dice que cuando escuchaba confesión o daba dirección espiritual, el calor emanaba de su pecho.

Al concluir la temporada de Pascua con el domingo de Pentecostés, pidamos a Dios que nos otorgue los dones del Espíritu Santo para que, al igual que San Felipe Neri, seamos siervos gozosos llenos del Fuego de Su Amor. Uno de los inconvenientes de este cierre fue que, entre otras cosas, tuvimos que posponer la Confirmación que se habría celebrado la semana pasada. Esperamos que el Obispo determine una fecha futura. All Masses are suspended until further notice. Masses will be televised on the Catholic Faith Network (Optimum Channel 29/137, Verizon FiOS TV 296, & Spectrum 162/471) and available online at: www.catholicfaithnetwork.org/ or www.saintpatrickscathedral.org/live.

People who devoutly attend the liturgy according to the indications of the Church, at the moment of receiving the Eucharist, pray to God, you will receive it spiritually. Communion can only be given as viaticum.

Our church will open for personal prayer, Monday-Saturday 9 a.m.-12 noon, Sunday 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Intentions previously made for masses will be offered privately by the priests. Grotto open 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. everyday.

The religious education program will remain suspended. These restrictions include rescheduling Confirmation, First Communion, First Confessions, etc. Catholic Elementary Schools in the Archdiocese of NY will remain closed to the end of the school year. Baptisms, weddings, funerals have been suspended during this time. In regard to funerals, please have your

funeral director contact us. Confessions can be heard with caution at a distance of 6 feet. We will continue to administer the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick as needed with possible

restrictions Pastoral care over the phone is available. As this emergency situation evolves, we will update the instructions we receive from the Archdiocese. But

the important thing is to use the means wisely and not to be infected with fear and even less with panic, but rather to trust in the divine providence of our Heavenly Father.
