A milestone is one of a series

of numbered markers usually found

along a road or highway at intervals of

one mile. Figuratively speaking, a mile-

stone is an event or stage in the life,

progress and development of a person.

Recently, I stood before our Vice Wing

Commander Col. Fleming with cadets

Morrison and Steele; he presented the

Wright Brother Award to Morrison, the

Billy Mitchell Award to Steele and the

Grover Loening Award to me. Each is a

milestone in the CAP cadet or senior

program. At this ceremony, ribbons

and promotions symbolized the impor-

tance of these milestones. While the

decorations are important, the mile-

stones they represent are critical; each

is a required achievement in passing

from one phase or level to another in

CAP membership.

Unlike passing real milestones, where

the traveler draws nearer his destina-

tion with each successive one and the

journey get shorter and easier, subse-

quent CAP milestones require more of

the recipient. A lot of hard works goes

into achieving a CAP milestone award.

While those who’ve received awards

may be rightfully proud of them, it’s

important to recognize they’re just a

marker along the way. There is always

more to do, more to learn and more

personal growth to be had as we look

ahead towards the next CAP milestone.

I congratulate cadets Morrison and

Steele on their milestone achievements.

I encourage them, and all our members,

to remain focused on the journey

ahead, keeping their dreams and goals

in sight and working to realize them with

relentless efforts.

I’m proud of my Loening Award and

promotion to Major; the things I did to

earn them were their own reward. I’m

not in CAP for awards or jewelry; I am a

fords me to serve, the accomplishments

of our volunteer service together and

Money is the root of... You’ve probably heard, “Money is the root of all evil.” That’s a common misquote of the biblical phrase, “For

the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.”

At Squadron 712 we don’t love money; we put the money we earn to very good use! Our squadron receives nooperational funding from Wing or National headquarters. This means we pay our bills, put gas and oil in

the van, and buy cadets’ uniform insignia, equipment and banquet dinners and more with the monies we raise.

Members who’ve participated in the following recent fundraisers have helped our Squadron secure some

significant financial donations:

• Spring Market Garden Succop Conservancy parking detail

• Rock Airport Crash Site Security Detail

•  AirQuest Warbird Day parking detail

• Big Butler Fair parking detail

• Ham Radio Swapfest Parking Detail

Of particularly note is Capt. Marak’s being OIC for the first three details, for securing the Crash Site Security

Detail through his personal initiative and then being there nearly the whole tasking!

My thanks also to Capt. McMillen who took the initiative to contact other squadrons who usually do the Big Butler

Fair, and arranging our participation in that detail with sharing of the proceeds.

Once again, my thanks to all members  who’ve help our squadron raise funds for our local budget.

Kevin Berry, Major CAP, Commander Squadron 712 Butler

Major Mike Lazaroff has completed Level IV of the Civil Air Patrol Senior Member Professional Development Program and received the Paul E. Garber award, the fourth Milestone of the Senior Member program. Of CAP’s 35,000Senior members less than 200 earn the Garber award each year.

The Garber Award is earned after receiving the Grover Loening Award;members must inform their communities about CAP, train fellow members in

a variety of courses, serve in command or leadership positions for at leasttwo years and must complete CAP’s mid-level leadership course, Region Staff College, or approved equivalent. Major Lazaroff completed National Legal Officers’ College. Additionally,Major Lazaroff has achieved a Master Rating in the Communications Specialty track.

By regulation, the Wing Commander or his designee presents a member his Garber Award. Wecan all look forward to seeing that happen at the Wing Conference in November. In themeantime, please join me in congratulating Major Lazaroff on his achievement and thededicated service to Civil Air Patrol it represents! Major Berry

As the new Cadet Com-

mander of Squadron 712 I thank

everyone for being as cooperative

as they have been. The Cadet

Commander must set goals for

the squadron’s cadet corps to at-

tain; I have several big goals for

us!

First, everyone’s uniform

should have no more than 3 gigs in

one month. This is simple, it only

takes about five to ten minutes to

make your uniform look sharp.

Help each other! If the uniforms

do not improve, there will be gigs,

which will lead to group PT.

Secondly, I want a model

rocketry program in the squadron.

We need a senior that is willing to

give some time for this to happen.

The program is a lot of well or-

ganized, educational and fun! It

helps build your mechanical sense,

teamwork and your stamina.

We need a standing color

guard ready to honor our countryat all times! This takes discipline,

dedication and practice.

Finally, we must boost the

morale of the cadets in the

squadron. Civil Air Patrol is a fun

program that is a key in helping

you succeed now, and in the fu-

ture. CAP gives you opportunities

that other kids your age simply

don’t have. So take that opportu-

nity and don’t let it go.

Thank You,

c/2nd Lt. Chase Zinn

Cadet Newbie

Maj. Dick Baker, Director of Operations West, called me and expressed his deep appreciation for the outstanding efforts

members of Squadron 712 Butler put forth during this summer’s USAF Guided Training Exercise (GTE.) He said the Air

Force “gushed” about how well it all went and that our people and facility provided an ideal mission base for this important

activity. He told me he’d like 712 to host the bi-annual Graded Training Exercise, during which the USAF evaluates PA

Wing’s mission performance, next summer.

I offer my congratulations to Capt. Keith McMillen, 712’s Officer In Charge for hosting the GTE, who took vacation time from

work to be available for his role in the GTE. He was also acting Commander of Squadron 712 as I was at Encampment

during the whole of the exercise.

Congratulations also to Major Mike Lazaroff for his role in supporting communications for this mission. Thanks also to

Captains Marak & Lopez who participated as Aircrew members on sorties flown during the week.

And another thanks to Capt. Marak, Lt. Perfors and all our cadets who, in spite of other

demands, did an outstanding job staffing the annual AirQuest Warbird Day parking detail.

Thanks also to all our members who helped prepare 712 HQ for use during the GTE.

Integrity, Volunteer Service, Excellence and Respect; we’ve demonstrated them all once

again and I’m proud of you people! It is my privilege to be your commander.

Kevin Berry, Major CAP, Commander Squadron 712 Butler

USAF/PAWG Guided Training Exercise

I’ve toyed with the idea of a CAP cartoon since I was a cadet! I’ve finally done it! My characters, C/CMSgt Lockdon and C/AB

Newbie (think about those names—say ‘em out loud a couple of times) are fictional characters. I’ll base the comic on humorous

experiences I’ve had while serving in CAP. I’m always willing to take suggestions too. I hope you enjoy the series! - Major Berry

Milestones Awards and Promotions

Some think we're just kids playing "Army" but

that is far from the truth. We live each day with

a fiery passion to better, not only ourselves, but

also our community, state, and nation. We

incorporate volunteer service, integrity,

excellence, and respect into our lives and into

the bright and glittering beacon of our futures.

It's more than a game. It's the fate of the

hundreds of lives we save each year and the

destiny of the hundreds of thousands of young

men and women we equip and train. Later, we

send them off into life: into the military, into

space, into science.... to study and discover, in

whatever they choose. We "reach for the skies".

We are the Civil Air Patrol.

Here at the Butler Composite Squadron 712, of

Pennsylvania, our cadets are doing just that:

preparing for their futures. Just like the

"ancestors" of our program, we learn to fly and serve our communities to the utmost of our abilities. We progress

through rank as an Auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, receiving a taste of what the military is truly like.

Butler Composite Squadron proudly announces its most recent accomplishment, consisting of three milestone

promotions. We were grateful to Major Gary Fleming, the Pennsylvania Wing Vice Commander as well as the Group 1

Commander, who came to the 712 headquarters at the Butler County Airport, Monday, September 12, to present these

new awards and ranks.

Squadron Commander, Kevin Berry, was promoted to Major, achieving the Grover Loening Award. This marks the

completion of Level III of the Civil Air Patrol Senior Member Professional Development Program.

Our senior members are not the only ones earnestly surging forward in the program. Two of our teenagers have also

made noteworthy progress as cadets, which will play a significant role in their future careers. Cadet Wyatt Steele,15

years old, achieved his Billy Mitchell Award, entitling him to the rank of Second Lieutenant and marking the finalization

of the Leading Phase. This is a huge milestone for Civil Air Patrol Cadets. Though there is no military obligation in the

program, the rank of Second Lieutenant enables cadets who choose to enlist in the Air Force to enter as C-3s (Airman

1st Class). In addition, it allows them to become 2nd Lieutenants in the Senior Member Program at the age of 21. Cadet

Wyatt Steele is indeed a young man of ambition and promise.

17 year old Cadet Bradley Morrison reached a milestone of his own. Now a Staff Sergeant, he has attained the Wright

Brothers Award and has completed the Learning Phase of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program. Cadet Morrison plans to

enlist with the Army Reserves upon completion of high school.

We are very proud of these members: outstanding examples of what it takes to embrace a goal and accomplish it.

Their determination and positive attitudes will get them far through life. A big hoorah to Butler Composite Squadron

712!

CAP’s Cadet Sponsor Member (CSM) is a membership category

for parents, grandparents or legal guardians of cadets who wantto be more involved in their cadet’s unit. CSMs assist their unit’s

Cadet Program, through their involvement in providing adult su-

pervision, serving as an overnight chaperone, and helping with

transportation.

CSMs pay annual national membership dues of $25 their f irst

year ($20 in following years) and are exempt from paying other

dues (e.g. Wing dues.) A CSM must be a parent, grandparent or

legal guardian of an active CAP cadet. Their membership termi-

nates when the cadet’s membership terminates, and they are as-signed to the same unit as the cadet. CSMs complete the senior

member Level I and Cadet Protection Program Training (both

simple online courses) before associating with cadets. They may

drive a CAP corporate vehicle after obtaining proper CAP licens-

ing. CSMs may also ride on military or CAP transportation to CAP

events in support of their function; as I read this, that means a

CSM can come along on our annual C-130 ride!

Applying for CSM membership is easy, and Capt. McMillen, our

Deputy Commander for Seniors, will be happy to help anyoneinterested to do so. You’ll need the full name and serial number

of the cadet(s) you’re sponsoring and must complete a CAPF 12

and an FBI Applicant Fingerprint Card. Once the application is

approved by NHQ, the CSM will receive a specially annotated

membership card and a special blazer-style nametag.

Contact Capt McMillen or Major Berry if you’re interested!
