COMMUNIQUÉ issued at conclusion of 27th CARICOM Intersessional Meeting BORDER ISSUES Guyana-Venezuela Relations Heads of Government received an update on the recent developments with respect to the controversy between Guyana and Venezuela. They noted that February 17, 2016, marks the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Agreement of 1966 between the Parties, which was intended to provide a solution to the controversy arising from Venezuela’s contention that the 1899 Arbitral Award, which definitively settled the land boundary between Guyana and Venezuela, is null and void. Heads of Government also noted that the Secretary General of the United Nations, having had discussions with the Heads of State of Guyana and Venezuela in September 2015, has since made a proposal to the two countries on the way forward towards a decisive end to the controversy. Heads of Government expressed their full support for the role of the United Nations Secretary General and his efforts, in keeping with the provisions of the Geneva Agreement, to bring the controversy to a definitive and judicious conclusion. Heads of Government reaffirmed their unequivocal support for the maintenance and preservation of Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

TEMAS DE FRONTERAS Relaciones Guyana-Venezuela Jefes de Gobierno recibieron una actualización sobre los últimos acontecimientos relacionados con la controversia entre Guyana y Venezuela. Tomaron nota que el 17 de febrero de 2016, marca el 50 aniversario de la firma del Acuerdo de Ginebra de 1966 entre las Partes, que tenía por objeto proporcionar una solución a la controversia que surge de la afirmación de Venezuela que la sentencia arbitral de 1899, la cual estableció definitivamente frontera terrestre entre Guyana y Venezuela, es nula y sin valor. Jefes de Gobierno también ha señalado que el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas, después de haber tenido conversaciones con los jefes de Estado de Guyana y Venezuela en septiembre de 2015, ha hecho una propuesta a los dos países para encaminar un final decisivo a la controversia.Jefes de Gobierno expresaron su pleno apoyo a la función del Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas y sus esfuerzos, de conformidad con lo dispuesto en el Acuerdo de Ginebra, para llevar la controversia a una conclusión definitiva y juicioso. Jefes de Gobierno reafirmaron su apoyo inequívoco para el mantenimiento y la preservación de la soberanía de Guyana y la integridad territorial.
