En este ejemplar de la revista CASA MIA nos inspiramos en la vida al

aire libre, en donde comenzamos por decirte algunas opciones de como

integrar el color verde a los interiores de tu casa, ya sea con alguna

pared, algún objeto o de manera natural.

Hablando de diseño mexicano no hay mejor silla para decorar tu terraza

o jardín que la silla Acapulco, de la época de oro de la bahía, en esos

tiempos toda la farándula de Hollywood iba constantemente a Acapulco,

desde Frank Sinatra a Elvis Presley, la silla la encuentras en todo tipo

de colores y sabores, es un diseño totalmente atemporal, en donde la

pongas le da un toque sofisticado y fresco a tu espacio, tan necesario en

este caluroso verano.

A unas cuantas horas de San Miguel de Allende se encuentran los

Jardines Surrealistas de Edward James, Las Pozas de Xilitla es una joya

arquitectónica perdida en la vegetación, vale la pena darse una vuelta

por allá y dejar volar nuestra imaginación.

Seleccionamos en uno de los artículos algunos objetos en verde y dorado,

una combinación muy clásica pero de mucha onda. Como nuestro

número es del verano, lo verde, las plantas, no podían faltar las macetas

más cool para tu planta o cactus, desde una maceta colgante a una

calavera en color turquesa.

Como número a número nos dimos a la tarea de escoger las mejores casas

In this issue of CASA MIA we have taken inspiration from life outdoors and so we begin by sharing options on how to integrate green to the interior of your house either with a wall, an object or with nature.

When speaking of Mexican design there is no better chair to decorate you yard or terrace than the Acapulco chair. It’s from the Golden age of the bay when the Hollywood elite would constantly travel to Acapulco, luminaries such as Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley. You can find the chair in all shapes and colors, it’s an ageless design that will add sophistication and a breath of fresh air anywhere you put it.

Just a few hours away from San Miguel de Allende you will find the surreal gardens of Edward James. Las Pozas in Xilitla is an architectural gem lost in vegetation, it is worth a trip to let your imagination soar.

In one of the articles we select some green and gold objects, a classic yet fun combination. As our issue is focused on summer, we couldn’t go with out cool green pots for your plants and cactuses from a hanging pot to a turquoise skull.

As in every issue, we took on the task of choosing the best houses on the market in San Miguel showcasing the beautiful gardens these houses boast.

En la década de 1950 y 60, Acapulco se convirtió en un destino atractivo

para el jet set. Los anuncios de las l íneas aéreas y otras imágenes de la

época muestran a una ciudad glamorosa y divertida en anuncios a todo

color. El famoso R AT PACK vacacionaba allí, Liz Taylor se caso de nuevo

en Acapulco, Jackie y John Kennedy pasaron su luna de miel ahí. Y en

algún momento en aquella época dorada nació la si l la Acapulco.

La sil la Acapulco fue producida por primera vez en los años 50, y

rápidamente se hizo popular en México. Por lo general hecha de cuerdas

de vinilo sobre una estructura metálica, es una sil la visualmente muy

ligera. La sil la Acapulco con mayor frecuencia se ha util izado al aire

l ibre, viene en colores bril lantes y da un look muy tropical.

Últimamente, los diseñadores han estado produciendo algunas

variaciones sobre la si l la Acapulco, versiones de cuero, sofá de dos

plazas, versiones de banda, banquitos, etc. En todas sus variantes la

si l la Acapulco muestra sus raíces en el diseño popular, el modernismo

y el glamour tropical a la Hollywood.

In the 1950’s and 60’s, Acapulco became a hot destination for the jet set . Airline ads and other images from the time depict a glamorous, fun beachy town in full technicolor. The rat pack vacationed there, Liz Taylor got married there, Jackie and John Kennedy honeymooned there. And at some point during that era, someone designed the Acapulco chair.

The Acapulco chair was first produced in the 50’s, and quickly became popular in Mexico. Usually made of vinyl cords on a metal, slightly pear-shaped frame, the Acapulco chair has most commonly been used as outdoor lounge seating, in bright, tropical colors.

Lately, designers have been producing some variations on the Acapulco theme round versions, leather versions, Mobius strip loveseat versions, etc. In all its iterations, the Acapulco chair shows it’s roots in folk design, modernism and tropical Hollywood glamour.

¿Alguna vez haz visitado la casa de un amigo y cuando entras por la puerta parece que eres atacado por varios y diversos estilos de muebles, colores y diseños? Tu amigo con orgullo te dice que había decorado la casa basándose en el estilo ecléctico. Tu pensaste que había sido un exceso cuando se seleccionó todo. Luego se visita un nuevo condominio de otro amigo y cuando entras en la sala había elementos sin duda diferentes, pero todo parecía funcionar. Este es el diseño ecléctico. El otro pudo haber sido un ataque de compras en un tianguis chic.

Si se piensa en ello, todo el mundo tiene gustos eclécticos. A nadie le gusta el 100% de una cosa, incluyendo colores y estilos de muebles. No es raro ver a un individuo amueblar su hogar en un estilo contemporáneo y colarse por ahí una pieza antigua, aquí y allá. Esto es apropiado pero no es ecléctico en el verdadero sentido. Decoradores profesionales te dirán que para tener un verdadero diseño ecléctico se tiene que incorporar el 70% de un estilo con un 30% de otro. No se tiene que sacar la calculadora para asegurar los porcentajes correctos, pero sí se tiene que incorporar un estilo dominante con otro menos dominante. Todo tiene que trabajar en armonía. No puede ser uno de esto y otro de aquello porque la habitación sería un grito de caos.

Para empezar, se necesita un lienzo en blanco. Este fondo neutro será como el pegamento que mantiene tu espacio unido. Si tienes paredes de color beige con un sofá y un sillón rojo, puede funcionar. Si tienes cuatro paredes de color rojo con un sofá de piel marrón y un sillón de orejas de pana a rayas de color azul y verde, tienes un lío. Puede ser audaz y pensar de manera muy creativa y diferente, pero no queremos empujar el límite de lo que puede convertirse en un desastre.

Have you ever entered a friend’s house and felt like you were attacked by different style furniture, colors and designs? Your friend proudly says they decorated based on eclectic design. Then you visit another friend’s house and you see a variety of elements that certainly seem different yet they work together successfully. Now this is eclectic design, the first might have been a shopaholic in a chic f lee market.

When you think about it everybody has an eclectic taste nobody likes 100% of one style, colors or furniture. It’s common for people to decorate their home in a contemporary style yet have an antique here and there. This is appropriate but not eclectic in the strictest sense. Professional decorators will tell you that to have a true eclectic style you need 70% of one style and 30% of another. You don’t need a calculator to find out the exact percentages but there should be a dominant style and a less dominant style, it should all be harmonious. You don’t want too much variety or it will just be chaos.

To begin you need a blank canvas. This neutral background will become the glue that holds your space together. If you have beige walls and a red sofa and love seat it might work but if you have four red walls one brown leather sofa, a tall back blue and green corduroy chair you might have a mess.

We can mix time periods and complementary colors. You can even add a few trendy pieces but the point is that all pieces and colors should work together in harmony. If you use a traditional sofa it should have something in common with that contemporary chair you chose. Often we match based on color since the style is different. For example, if we

Podemos mezclar periodos de tiempo, más colores que complementen. Incluso se puede añadir una pieza de moda o dos. Pero la conclusión es que todas las piezas y los colores tienen que trabajar juntos mezclándose en armonía. Si se utiliza un sofá tradicional, éste debe tener algo en común con una silla contemporánea que escogimos. Muy a menudo unimos con el color porque las líneas son diferentes. Por ejemplo si elegimos el rojo para una pared de acento, el sofá puede tener una textura con un toque de rojo en ella, mientras que la silla moderna puede ser de oro, con unas pequeñas rayas rojas. Ambos artículos tapizados tienen el color en común, así como toda la habitación o el acento de la pared. Una vez que tenemos los fundamentos en su lugar, a continuación, podemos buscar complementando los elementos que se pueden agregar. Por ejemplo, la silla es oro, podemos tener una lámpara de mesa con una base en tono dorado con un tono neutro. La lámpara puede estar en cualquier estilo que te guste. La base de la lámpara es la vinculación con el color de la silla.

Mediante la adición del color, líneas, texturas y formas a la habitación transformamos algo aburrido a un diseño ecléctico. No olvidemos agregar cuadros y espejos con algunos marcos dorados. Manos a la obra y a decorar.

Both items have red in common just as the rest of the room or the accent wall . Once we have the foundation in place we can search for the compliments we will add. Since we have a gold chair you could find a table lamp with a golden base in neutral tones in any style you like, the base of the lamp is what will tie it to the chair.

Lets imagine we have a very neutral room with beige walls and dark wood f loors, boring. Yet you could add an eclectic style and change the ambiance completely. Let’s begin by filling the space with a large textured multicolored mat, then some dramatic lighting from a lamp that picks up on a color from the rug on its base. Perhaps we could find an antique (or reproduction) stand or wine rack. We could then add a textured sofa, something with a neutral background but with a bold pattern or color taken from the mat’s color scheme.

Through the addition of color, lines, textures and form to the room we have taken something boring and transformed it into eclectic design. Don’t forget to add paintings or mirrors with gold frames. Let’s get busy and go decorate.

Edward James fue heredero de una gran fortuna ya que era el único varón

entre 4 hermanas, su padre murió cuando él tenía 5 años, la mayor parte de su

infancia creció atendido por nanas francesas y alemanas. A los 14 años escribió

sus primeros poemas. A los 19 años entró a la Universidad Oxford en la facultad

de Bellas Artes. A los 22 años sufre la pérdida de su madre pero también se

libera del yugo al que esta lo tenía sometido. A los 24 años obtuvo su primer y

único empleo como agregado honorario de la embajada británica en Roma, siete

meses después renunció, durante esta época se dedicó a patrocinar artistas.

De regreso en Londres fundó su propia casa editorial y publicó sus poemas

además se dedicó a asediar a Tilly Losch, una bailarina de gran belleza de la que

se había enamorado, y aún con 24 años contrajo matrimonio con ella Tilly se

mostraba fría e interesada en el dinero y al contrario de James no deseaba tener

hijos, sólo 2 años duró su matrimonio. Posterior a su divorcio se recluyó en West

Dean (su mansión en Inglaterra).

Edward James had 4 sisters yet as the only male child, he inherited a great fortune when his father passed away, he was 5 years old and he was mostly raised by French and German nannies. At 14 years old he wrote his first poems and at 19 he entered Oxford University’s fine arts program. His mother passed away when he was 22 years old and although it was a great loss for him it also freed him of a great burden. When he was 24 he had a shortlived job as honorary attaché at the British Embassy in Rome, he quit after 7 months. After this he became a patron of the arts.

Upon returning to London he established his own publishing house and published his own poems. He also began to harass Tilly Losch a beautiful ballerina whom he had fallen in love with. They got married at 24 years old yet she was cold and was only interested in his money. Unlike James, she did not want any children and the marriage lasted only 2 years. After that he became a recluse in his mansion, West Dean in England.

Empezó a dejarse seducir por el surrealismo, financió la revista del movimiento

surrealista: MINOTAURO, se convirtió en mecenas de pintores surrealistas

como: el belga Rene Magritte y del español Salvador Dalí, con este último firmó

un contrato: el pintor se comprometía a entregarle su producción de 1936 a 1938

a cambio de un pago semestral.

En 1944 viajó a México, específicamente a Cuernavaca, Morelos. Aquí conoció

a la pintora surrealista de origen inglés Leonora Carrington y a Plutarco

Gastelum, empleado de la oficina de telégrafos. En ciudad Valles, alguien le

comentó a James que las orquídeas crecían silvestres en Xilitla y acompañado

por Plutarco Gastelum fue a buscar este lugar donde plantó orquídeas. Tras la

llegada Edward al pueblo de Xilitla, en 1950 construyó dentro de este lugar Las

Pozas que son diversas construcciones hechas en concreto, donde el expresa

sus mas delirantes sueños.

A continuación se hará mención de algunas de las más importantes

construcciones que se pueden encontrar en Las Pozas: EL PASILLO DE LAS

SIETE SERPIENTES, que simbolizan los siete pecados capitales que el hombre

debe vencer. LAS MANOS cuya finalidad es proporcionar paz al viajero que

emprende este recorrido con el corazón puro y las manos limpias de pecado. LA

ESCALERA AL CIELO: que consta de dos escaleras de caracol que se enroscan

proyectándose hacia el infinito por donde se suponía en un lado subían los

pobres y por el otro los ricos para al final ambos llegar al mismo punto.

En 1984 falleció tras una embolia en San Remo Italia, las construcciones

quedaron bajo propiedad de Plutarco Gastelum hijo hasta la actualidad. Una

He began to be seduced by the surrealism movement and financed the magazine MINOTAURO. He became the patron to surrealist painters such as Rene Margritt from Belgium and Salvador Dali from Spain. He signed a contract with Dali; he would hand over his works from 1936 to 1938 in exchange for a biannual payment.

In 1944 he traveled to Cuernavaca Morelos in Mexico. There he met the English surreal painter Leonora Carrington and Plutarco Gastelum who was an employ of the telegram office. While in Valles city somebody mentioned to James that orchids grew wild in Xilitla and with Plutarco Gastelum he set of to find this place where he planted orchids.

After arriving to the town of Xilitla in 1950 Edwards built within it Las Pozas, diverse structures made of concrete where he expresses his most wildest and delirious dreams. These are some of the most important and iconic structures you can find in Las Pozas: THE HALL WAY OF SEVEN SERPENTS, symbolizes the seven capital sins that man must overcome. THE HANDS, which purpose is to provide peace to the traveler that takes on this journey with a pure heart and innocent hands. STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN, is two intertwined staircases towards the void, one is for the poor and the other for the rich to ascend but they both reach the same destination.

Edward James died in 1984 from an embolism in San Remo Italy. The statues are to this day the property of Plutarco Gastelum Jr.

MAKE IT GREEN

El color verde se utiliza para dar equilibrio y armonía al entorno por lo que

no es de extrañarse que el verde es de las opciones preferidas en el diseño

de interiores. Aparte de la psicología de color, el color verde tiene una

particularidad única, ser la conexión y la extensión del exterior al interior y

sobre todo en el verano. Es un gran color para complementar con los demás.

Incluso en un esquema de color verde monocromático, un toque de cualquier

otro color no se vería fuera de lugar y es el tipo de diseño de interiores que

pueden ir creciendo con nosotros.

En nuestros días muchas veces el diseño se trata de borrar la línea entre el exterior

al interior, es un concepto importante cuando se trata de decoración para el hogar,

la mejor manera de hacerlo es incorporar el verde como el color principal. Mediante

el uso de verde, no sólo se hace referencia a la gama de colores de la naturaleza, sino

que también hace referencia a los espacios verdes literalmente.

Green tends to give balance and a sense of harmony so it is not strange that interior designers have a preference for it. Other tan the psychology of color the color green has the added characteristic of being an extension and connection of the exterior into the interior, especially in summertime. It’s also a great color to complement others. Even in a green monochromatic color scheme a hint of a different color doesn’t look out of place and it’s the type of interior design that can grow with us.

Today many times design is about blurring the line between exterior and interior, it’s an important concept when speaking of home décor. The best way to do this is to make green the main color. Through the use of green we not only make reference to the color scheme of nature but also reference green spaces, literally.

HAZLO VERDE

Acentuar en verde una pared

Cuando queremos transformar el interior de una casa con

el color verde, la forma más fácil de hacerlo es con la pintura

y al mismo tiempo lo más seguro es pintar una pared para

acentuar, una opción mucho más dramática es llevar esa

pared de acento a los planos circundantes. Si te gusta la idea

de un esquema de color verde monocromático entonces la

idea sería crear distintas capas de diferentes materiales

en muchos tonos de verde añadiendo un interés visual y

visceral, aparte de baldosas, las molduras pueden agregar

una gran cantidad de textura a una habitación y cuando

están pintados del mismo color que las paredes las sombras

que se generan son la atracción principal. Como contraste

a las sombras considere el colgar espejos para generar otra

capa de luz refractada.

Green Accent Wall

When we want to use green to transform the interior of a home the easiest way is to use paint and to paint an accent wall. An even more dramatic option is to take the accent wall and paint all the surrounding walls. If you like the idea of a green monochromatic scheme then the idea is to use layers of many different textures and materials in many shades of green adding a visual and visceral interest. Other than tiles, moldings are a great way of adding texture to a room and when they are painted the same color as the walls then the shadows this creates is the main attraction. As contrast to the shadows you could consider hanging up mirrors as another layer of refracted light.

neutros en las paredes, hay otras formas de inyectar el verde

a su decoración. Cuando se utiliza el color en detalles hay

que considerar el uso de una gran variedad de tonos oscuros

a claros, verdes suaves van muy bien con grises y cremas,

es como un cálido día de verano en el jardín. Si usted tiene

unos pocos elementos verdes que no acaban de crear la

cantidad justa de drama, una alfombra puede añadir la

explosión extra de color, pero hay que considerar el uso de

una alfombra con una pátina envejecida a fin de no dominar

Green Details

If you like green but prefer a more neutral color scheme on the walls, there is another way to inject your décor with it. When you use the color in the details, you should consider a wide variety of tones from dark to light. Light greens work well with gray and cream tones, like a warm summer day in the garden. If you only have a few green elements and they don’t quite deliver on the drama, an area rug can add that extra shot of color yet you should consider an aged patina so as to not overpower the other green elements in your decoration.

Decorating in green is a great way to bring that outdoor feeling into your home.

Clay has existed for centuries and it is here to stay, we could even call it an emergent material something that every civilization discovered on their own, and therefor has been the story teller, witness, and evidence of many lives and households. It has been part of design, since before design existed, and it has always been part of Mexican life.

We chose to use pots as an object of design, to be recreated by us and used as an architecture material . Going back down to earth and being surrounded by earth, adding plants to it to create a living pavilion, that will grow and mold, and when the time comes to tear it down, you can just do it as they did in the old times, break it in too little pieces back into the ground.

La arcilla ha existido durante siglos y está aquí para quedarse, incluso

se podría decir que es un material emergente, algo que cada civilización

descubrió por su cuenta, y por lo tanto ha sido la escritora de cuentos, el

testimonio y la evidencia de muchas vidas y hogares. Ha sido parte del diseño,

ya existía antes del diseño, y siempre ha sido parte de la vida mexicana.

En esta pieza se optó por utilizar macetas como un objeto de diseño, para

ser recreado por nosotros y se utiliza como un material de arquitectura.

Volviendo a la tierra y estar rodeado de tierra, añadiendo plantas a él para

crear un pabellón de estar, que crecerá y tendrá moho, y cuando llegue el

momento de derribarla, sólo puede hacerlo como lo hicieron en los viejos

tiempos, romperlo en pedazos muy pequeños de nuevo en el suelo.
