Collage viene del término francés coller, que significa encolar o pegar, pero el arte del Collage es mucho más que cortar y pegar.

Este libro recoge algunas creaciones de distintos artistas que trabajan el collage de forma muy personal y con técnicas muy distintas los unos de los otros: Los hay que usan fotografía; Rocío Montoya, Eli Craven, los hay que trabajan con pintura; Scott Waters y hasta los hay que trabajan con objetos como Max Shuster. Todas ellas son técnicas que han derivado en múltiples estilos y lenguajes que presentamos en este libro.

Collage comes from the French term coller, which means to glue or paste. But collage art is much more than cutting and pasting.

This book takes up some creations of different artists who work the collage in a very personal way, each with very distinct techniques: Some use photography, Rocío Monotya, Eli Craven; some use paint, Scott Waters; and others even work with objects, like Max Shuster. All of these are techniques that have resulted in multiple styles and languages which are presented in this book.

Eli Craven (b. 1979) is an American artist living in Illinois. His work explores the role of images in processes of socialization. He uses photography, found imagery, sculpture and collage to create pictures and objects that suggest something tangible behind the surface of a photograph. He gathers imagery from collected magazines, books and his own personal history, and with a delicate blend of humor and melancholy they are reconfigured to interrogate the ostensible values of the original.The project “Screen Lovers” comes from a photo book of iconic movie couples of the same name. The images were all romantic, sexually charged film stills throughout movie history. As I looked through them, I really wanted to see them come together, touch lips, make love, whatever comes next, so I started folding them into one another.

Eli Craven es un artista americano, nacido en 1979, que vive en Illinois. Su trabajo consiste en explorar el rol de las imágenes en su proceso de socialización. Utiliza fotografías, escultura en metal fundido y collages para crear imágenes y objetos que sugieran algo tangible por detrás de la superficie plana de una foto. Las imágenes las recopila a partir de revistas, libros y de su propia historia personal, y con una delicada mezcla de humor y melancolía las reconfigura de tal forma que se interrogan sobre el valor del original.El proyecto “screen Lovers” tiene su origen en un libro de fotos del mismo nombre, sobre míticas parejas de cine. Todas las imágenes eran románticas. La carga sexual de la película permanece a lo largo de toda la cinta. Mirándolas, me di cuenta de que debía juntarlas aún más, ya estuviesen besándose o haciendo el amor. Así que empecé a plegarlas las unas sobre las otras.

When a photograph has been torn, pierced, or somehow manipulated the end results display a certain illogical textural feat. As objects like dice, octopus tentacles, and sleeping pills are placed on top of the photographs they are treated as accompanying yet incongruous contextual objects. There is continuity among the old dated photographs that once existed but now has been orchestrated in an absurd manner. Aside from the initial juxtaposition of the old versus new, the two dimensional versus the new hyper extended third-dimension, and the twists of logic, there is a sense of familiarity. The ancient photos are more than reminders; they are artifacts that enable our preservation. “I want to convey the grotesque, playful, and familiar in my work while actively seeking out new imagery so foreign to me.”Max Shuster grew up in Nashville, TN and later attended Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD where he earned his MFA in Photographic and Electronic Media. He currently lives in Los Angeles as a commercial photographer where he also photographs his own collages, sculptures, sets, and installations. He is represented in Nashville by Cumberland Gallery.

Cuando una foto ha sido cortada, dividida, perforada, o manipulada de una u otra forma, el resultado final puede constituir un hito textural completamente ilógico.Cuando objetos como dados, los tentáculos de un pulpo o somníferos aparecen encima de los objetos de las fotos, estos son entonces tratados como incongruentes objetos contextuales. Hay una continuidad entre las antiguas fotos que ha sido orquestada de forma absurda. Aparte de la yuxtaposición inicial de lo antiguo contra lo nuevo, de lo bidimensional contra la híper extendida tridimensionalidad y el retorcimiento de la lógica, existe una cierta familiaridad. Las antiguas fotos son algo más que recuerdos, posibilitan nuestra preservación. “Quiero expresar lo grotesco, la parte alegre y familiar de mi trabajo, mientras que al mismo tiempo busco imágenes extranjeras a mi universo”.Max Schuster se crió en Nashville, en Tennessee, y más adelante obtuvo su MFA en Photographic Electronic Media en el Maryland Institute College of Art de Baltimore. Actualmente vive en Los Ángeles, donde ejerce como fotógrafo comercial, y al mismo tiempo, crea sus propios collages, esculturas, colecciones e instalaciones. Born in Istanbul, Graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University as an ceramic artist in 2010. She created “Choke Jungle” brand and started to design ceramic jewellery. Her ceramic works are featured by known magazines such as British Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire Turkey.“Natural act” is composed by several collages based on the questions of the relation between nature and the humanity. It is basicly a critical presentation referring to the fact that each of us is part of the nature. it seeks the answer whether greed, urbanization, mechanization and detaching from the nature is favorable or coherent for human or not. In that sense “natural act” appears with its all colors when our emotions are paralysed in the vital points of the clishe and dull city life.

Sus trabajos en cerámica aparecen en publicaciones como British Vogue, Elle y Marie Claire Turkey.“Acto natural” está compuesto por varios collages basados en preguntas que conciernen la relación entre la naturaleza y la humanidad. Básicamente es una presentación crítica del hecho de que cada uno de nosotros forma parte de la naturaleza. Busca una respuesta. Quiere saber si la ambición, la urbanización, la mecanización y el alejamiento de la naturaleza son favorables o coherentes con el ser humano o no.
