El comienzo de noviembre nos brinda laoportunidad de reflexionar más específicamentesobre la iglesia como comunidad de VerdaderosDiscípulos. La semana pasada proporcionó esavisión desde la perspectiva de la comunión de losSantos y luego las almas en el Purgatorio. EsteJueves la Iglesia celebra la fiesta de laDedicación de la Basílica de Letrán en Roma, lacatedral del Papa. Como la catedral del Papa, laBasílica de San Juan de Letrán simboliza nuestracomunión en Cristo como la Iglesia Universal através del ministerio Petrino. Jesucristo es lafuente de nuestra unidad como el puebloperegrino de Dios. Haciendo de Simón Pedro la roca sobrela cual edificaría su Iglesia, Cristo estableció el ministerioPetrino del Papa de unidad y pastoreo.

La frase, la Iglesia, tiene dos significados; uno es eledificio donde alabamos al Señor y la otra es la comunidadde creyentes. Es claro que los edificios de la Iglesiaproporcionan el lugar sagrado para reconocer másclaramente la presencia de Dios. Estos bellos edificiostambién inspiran una fe más profunda en Dios, quien esmas de lo que podemos imaginar. Cuando nos referimos aledificio, usando la frase, "la iglesia," se usa una "i"minúscula.

Aún así, el uso más importante del término, "laIglesia," usando la " I" mayúscula, se refiere a laFamilia de Dios, la comunidad de VerdaderosDiscípulos. Esta es la Iglesia que Jesús construyó, no deladrillos y piedra, sino de sus discípulos y sobre San Pedro.Esta es la Iglesia que San Pablo describió como el CuerpoMístico de Cristo, compuesta de muchas partes diferentes,y sin embargo sigue siendo una. Esta es la Iglesia en la queprofesamos nuestra fe cada Domingo cuando decimos,“Creo en la Iglesia, que es una, Santa, Católica yApostólica.”

Dear People and Friends of San Juan Bautista,

The beginning of November provides uswith the opportunity to reflect morespecifically on the Church as the communityof Intentional Disciples. This past weekprovided that glimpse from the perspective ofthe communion of saints and then the souls inpurgatory. This Thursday the Churchcelebrates the Feast of the Dedication of theLateran Basilica in Rome, the Pope’sCathedral. As the Pope’s Cathedral, theBasilica of St. John Lateran symbolizes ourCommunion in Christ as the UniversalChurch through the Petrine ministry. Jesus

Christ is the source of our unity as the pilgrim People ofGod. In making Simon Peter the rock upon which hewould build his Church, Christ established the Pope’sPetrine ministry of unity and shepherding.

The phrase, the Church, has two meanings; one is thebuilding where we worship and the other is thecommunity of believers. Clearly our church buildingsprovide the sacred space in which to recognize God’spresence more clearly. These beautiful edifices alsoinspire a deeper faith in God, who is so much more thanwe can imagine. When we refer to the building, thephrase, “the church,” uses a small “c.”

Yet, the more important use of the term, “theChurch,” using a capital “C,” refers to the Family of God,the community of Intentional Disciples. It is thisChurch that Jesus built, not of br icks and stone, but ofhis disciples and upon Saint Peter. It is this Church thatSaint Paul described as the Mystical Body of Christ, madeup of many different parts, and yet still one. It is thisChurch in which we profess our faith each Sundaywhen we say, “We believe in one, holy, catholic andapostolic Church.”

The UNITY we have in Christ’s Church is furtheremphasized by the inscription outside the LateranBasilica, “Mother and Head of all the Churches of theCity and the World.” Thus, in the Pope and his cathedralchurch, we are reminded that we, together with1,000,000,000 other Catholics, are united as a livingTemple pleasing to the Lord. This UNITY reveals animportant quality of heaven.

Our Parish of San Juan Bautista manifests thisunity of faith and life of Hispanic Catholics here inLancaster. Yet, this requires our personal commitment asIntentional Disciples of the Lord. Stewardship forms animportant part of being Intentional Disciples. May wecommit ourselves more fully to the Church of Jesus Christby being ever more committed Intentional Disciples at ourParish of San Juan Bautista.
