• Lean manufacturing is a strategy and a way of working which aims to eliminate or reduce waste, and any activities which are consuming resources without adding value.

• 5S is… – the foundation of a lean organisation (house of

lean) – a process created by Toyota in Japan to create and

maintain a clean, orderly and safe workplace

• Goal: Implement 5S in the Mouldings department to

– Improve safety– Reduce number of defects– Increase productivity and reach deadlines more

efficiently– Reduce stress for the line operators

• Sort – removing all items from the workplace that are not required on a daily basis

• Shine – cleaning everything to return to good working order• Set – arranging items that are needed, identifying and

labelling them• Standardise – creating a consistent way of maintaining Sort,

Shine and Set on a daily basis• Sustain – instilling 5S as a fundamental part of everyday

operation e.g. auditing

• Monthly Rapid Improvement Event to implement the process• Training and leading team
