My senior year of High School I participated in a two-month language exchange program to Oaxaca, Oaxaca Mexico studying Spanish. After I graduated from High School in 2002 I was selected by the Mt. Bachelor Rotary Club to serve as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student in Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerias Brazil. I spent one year in Brazil, learning Portuguese, Brazilian culture, traveling and assisting in teaching conversational English at a local secondary school. My experiences abroad have radically changed my life in the best possible way and I will always cherish the places I have seen and the people I have met. Through my experiences studying different languages I have learned many different ways of instruction on the process of learning a new language, which I believe will assist me in this position. I believe in strong class interaction, not only between the professor and the students but also a wide range of learning materials including but not limited to, visual aids, audio and oral communication. I understand how hard it can be to learn a new language. When I arrived in Brazil I knew only how to say, hello. I had no formal instruction in the Portuguese language for over six month so I was forced to learn by listening and repeating what I had heard to the best of my abilities; sometimes resulting in great embarrassment to me. This process of learning a language which is very irregular gave me insight into how hard it must be to try and just pick up a language for scratch without any books, classes or teachers; this I believe is something not many people can say they have done. After I started receiving formal instruction my ability to “go with the flow” on learning the language did come in handy and I excelled. From this experience and having six formal semesters of college instruction in different languages I believe I have a very unique insight to offer in regards to how to properly learn and teach a new, second or even third language. I would like to also add that I am currently taking online TEFL courses in order to gain yet another tool for my teaching tool box. This course should be completed by April 25 th . In closing I would like to talk briefly about my personal teaching style, philosophy and why I want to relocate to Spain from South Korea. Teaching has been such a rewarding experience for me thus far and I do believe that the fact that I have lived in a wide variety of places, countries and cultures has given me an unique outlook on life that is both fun and educational for me to pass on to others. You might have noticed that I started off by saying Aloha. In Hawaii that means, hello, goodbye, respect, family and love. Most people only know about the first two and the others are something that one can’t read about in books they have to be lived. I start and end every one of my classes out by saying a big Aloha. I do this because I want to pass those values listed above to others. I also believe in multi tooled way of teaching. That is to say try and use as many resources available to me as possible. These might include, books, music, DVDs, YouTube videos, black boards and of course games. If you wish I would be more than happy to send you more information on my personal teaching style and even in class video. In regards to why I would like to relocate to Spain. Let me just start by saying that I do love teaching in South Korea and if I can’t secure a teaching position in Spain I would be more than happy to stay here. But I do feel like South Korea is extremely closed off from the rest of the world. It lacks the flavor of internationality. It’s hard to find foreign things, people, stores, food etc. that I really crave. I realize that not every country is as diverse as the halls of the United Nations but I would prefer a place with a bit more international flavor and yes I must admit a little more adventure.
