1Redox/ORP Electrode Manual
IntroductionThis manual contains instructions for the Orion Epoxy Sure-
Flow Combination Redox/ORP (9678BN), Glass Combination
Redox/ORP (9778BN), Epoxy Low Maintenance ORP Triode
(9179BN) and Epoxy Refillable ORP Triode (9180BN).
The Orion 9678BNWP and 9778BNWP combine a platinum
redox and a silver/silver chloride reference electrode in one
body. The Orion 9678BN is an epoxy body electrode with
a sleeve junction and the Orion 9778Bn has a glass body
with a ceramic junction. Both can be used to make direct
measurements of redox potentials or to perform potentiometric
titrations.
The Orion 9179BNMD and 9180BNMD consist of a platinum
redox sensor, a silver/silver chloride internal reference
system and a built-in thermistor for Automatic Temperature
Compensation (ATC). Orion 91-80 is a refillable electrode,
which uses Orion 900011 or 900001 filling solution. Orion 91-79
is a non-refillable, low maintenance gel-filled electrode. The
9179BNMD and 9180BNMD both have the capability to measureORP and Temperature simultaneously without a separate
reference electrode. Direct measurements of redox potentials or
potentiometric titrations can also be performed with these ORP
Triode electrodes.

Important Measurement Techniques Stir all standards and samples at a uniform rate during
measurement.
Magnetic stirrers may generate sufficient heat to change
solution temperature. Place a piece of insulating material
such as cork, cardboard or styrofoam between the stir plate
and sample beaker.
Always use fresh ORP standards for calibration.
Always rinse electrode(s) with distilled water thoroughly
between measurements. Gently shake electrode afterrinsing to prevent solution carry-over, then blot dry with a
lint-free tissue.
Allow all standards and samples to come to room
temperature for precise measurements.
Make sure the electrode filling solution is appropriate foryour sample. See Electrode Assembly and Preparation.
Electrode MeasurementsDirect Redox Potential (ORP) measurements can be used to
determine the oxidizing or reducing capability of a solution andare commonly made in polluted streams, chlorinated waters,
industrial waste waters, and other water samples.
1. After setting up the meter and calibrating the electrode,
the electrode is ready for measurements. When the meter
switches back to the MEASURE mode or is in relative mV
mode, place the electrode in the sample solution.
2. When the reading stabilizes, record the potential reading
and the temperature.
Note: Like all platinum redox electrodes, Orions 9179BNMD
and 9180BNMD may give unstable readings in solutions
containing chromous, vanadous, titanous, and other ions that
are stronger reducing agents than hydrogen or platinum.
Note:When requiring a specific measurement method
other than Direct Measurement, please refer to
www.thermo/water.com (i.e. Oxidation Reduction Titrations).

Electrode Maintenance
Orion 9179BNMD
This Low-Maintenance ORP TriodeTM electrode can be rinsed
off with distilled water from any salt build-up.
Orion 9180BNMD
This refillable ORP Triode electrode should be routinely cleaned.
To remove precipitate from outside wall or on electrode tip,
rinse with distilled water. Make sure that the filling solution does
not crystallize or dry out. If crystallized, run the electrode under
distilled water or wipe the vent hole area with a damp tissueand then fill with filling solution. Always keep the electrode fill
hole plug on to prevent salt build up while storing for a short
period of time up to one day. Fill hole must be open during
measurements.
Electrode Cleaning Procedures
Orion 9678BNWP Cleaning
The electrode can be routinely cleaned without disassembling.
To remove precipitate that forms on the outside wall or tip of
the electrode, rinse with distilled water. If sample or precipitate
clogs the space between the electrode sleeve and the innercone, clean the chamber by flushing out the fill solution. To do
this, invert the electrode to moisten the O-ring. Holding the
electrode by the cap with one hand, push the outer sleeve up
into the cap with the other hand, allowing the fill solution to
drain from the chamber. If the chamber is not completely clean,
repeat refill with the fill solution.
If the preceding directions fail to remove all the precipitate, the
electrode can be disassembled and cleaned using the following
procedure: This procedure is not recommended for routine
cleaning of the electrode and should be used only when
absolutely necessary.
1. Unscrew the cap and slide the cap and epoxy coated springup along the cable. See Figure 1.
2. Holding the outer sleeve with one hand, firmly push down
on the threaded portion of the inner body to separate the
inner body from the sleeve.
-

7Redox/ORP Electrode Manual
3. Rinse the sleeve and the inner body thoroughly with
distilled water, and allow to air dry.
4. Moisten the O-ring on the electrode inner body with a drop
of fill solution. Reassemble and fill the electrode.
Changing the Fill SolutionThe electrode need not be disassembled to change the fill
solution in the reference chamber. Simply clean the electrode
and fill with the new solution, using the following procedure:
1. Tip the electrode to moisten the O-ring. Holding theelectrode by the cap with one hand, push the sleeve up into
the cap with the other hand allowing solution to drain from
the chamber.
2. Fill the electrode with distilled water and then drain the
reference chamber by retracting the sleeve, as explained
above. Now perform this filling and draining proceduretwice with the new filling solution.
3. Fill the electrode with new solution: Although the electrode
is ready for use, readings may drift slightly for about a half
hour while the electrode equilibrates with the new solution.
Orion 9778BNWP Cleaning
To remove precipate or salts that form on the exterior of the
electrode, rinse with distilled water. To remove salt deposits
formed inside the electrode:
1. Fill a wash bottle to half with distilled water.
2. Invert electrode so that glass membrane points up.
3. Invert the wash bottle so that its bottom points up.
4. Insert nozzle of wash bottle into electrode filling hole
and squeeze bottle. The fill solution will drain out ofthe chamber.
5. Fill chamber with distilled water from wash bottle.
-

6. Continue to repeat steps 2-5 until all salts have been
removed.
To change the fill solution, follow steps 1-6 in cleaning above.
After draining out distilled water, fill with fill solution, drain, and
refill with the solution.
Orion 9179BN Cleaning
To remove precipitate or salts that form on the exterior of the
electrode, rinse with distilled water.
Orion 9180BN CleaningTo remove salt deposits formed inside the electrode, follow the
procedure below:
1. Fill a wash bottle to half with distilled water.
2. Invert electrode so that sensor points up.
3. Insert nozzle of wash bottle into electrode filling hole and
squeeze bottle.
4. Fill chamber with distilled water.
5. Take a 1 mL plastic disposable pipet and remove the liquidfrom the inverted electrode.
6. Repeat steps 2 to 4 until precipitate and deposits are
removed.
7. Rinse with fresh fill solution. Remove fill solution with pipet.
8. Fill with fresh fill solution.

Electrode Storage
Short-term Storage (up to one day):
Electrodes may be kept in distilled water or air. If left in air,
remove salt crystals on the outside of the electrode sleeve by
rinsing with distilled water.
Long-term Storage (more than 24 hours):
For Orion 9179BNMD, rinse electrode, dry with lint-free tissues
or air dry, and replace with electrode protective cap. Store DRY.
For Orion 9180BNMD, 9678BNWP, 9778BNWP, remove saltcrystals on the outside of the electrode by rinsing with distilled
water, drain filling solution from chamber, flush out with
distilled water and store dry. See Cleaning Procedures. Replace
electrode protective caps to prevent sensor damage.
TroubleshootingThe most important principle in troubleshooting is to isolate
the components of the system and check each in turn. The
components of the system are: 1) Meter 2) Electrode(s)
3) Standard and 4) Sample.
Meter
The meter is the easiest component to eliminate as a possible
cause of error. Orion meters are provided with an instrument
checkout procedure in the instruction manual and a shorting
cap for convenience in troubleshooting. Consult the manual for
complete instructions and verify that the instrument operates as
indicated and is stable in all steps.
Electrode(s)
Rinse electrode(s) thoroughly with distilled water.
Place electrode in the ORP solution and wait until the readingstabilizes.
The potential reading should be 220 60 mV. If the mV is out
of range, use fresh standards. If the problem persists, consult
with the Thermo technical service department.

Standard
The quality of results depends greatly upon the quality of the
standards. ALWAYS prepare fresh standards when problems
arise it could save hours of frustrating troubleshooting!
SampleIf the electrodes work properly in standards but not in the
sample, look for possible interferences, or substances that could
affect response or physically damage the sensing electrode or
the reference electrode. If possible, determine the composition
of the samples and check for problems.
