Weekly Reflection

Easter – a Time of Joy!

The first fruit of the paschal mystery is that God is experienced by God’s people not in terms of some external power forced upon us, but rather as an inner movement, something that hap-pens inside of those who believe. The words John uses to speak of this are love and joy. According to this Sunday’s sec-ond reading, “Love consists in this, in that God has loved us, and sent his Son as an offering for us.” So, simply put, love is what Jesus has done for us – and as His disciples that’s what we are called to do for one another.

The first thing that Jesus did for us was to give Himself – completely and without reservation. He did so freely, with full awareness of all of the implications of His choice. And so must we. If our relationship with others is genuinely loving, we walk into it with our eyes wide open. True love is always sacrificial. The law of completion means that we only un-derstand what we have received when we give it away. Therefore, true disciples only enter into the full-ness of joy when they love one an-other as Jesus has loved them.

In his Gospel John gives us the surest sign to use in judging whether or not this is happening in our lives. The word he uses is joy. In Jesus’ words, “I have done all of this, and you must do it too, so that your joy may be complete.” That’s the mark of true love, of Christian love: joy. If we understand ourselves as links in the “love chain” – from the Father to Jesus, from Jesus to each of us, and from each of us to one another – we move from anx-ious, separate living into Holy Communion. So, it comes down to this: God has indeed loved us and sent us to love one anoth-er. If we live in this truth, the only possible response is joy.

God is Present to Us in Sacramental Signs

Soon the Feast of Pentecost will be upon us and the Easter Season will come to a close. This is a time of celebration and spiritual renewal for us as Catholic Chris-tians. We affirm the relationship we share with God our Father who created us to know, love, and serve Him through our celebration of the Easter Sacraments. Our sharing in the Passion, Death, and Resurrection; the Paschal Mystery of Je-sus Christ, we are drawn into that em-

brace of love that heals the great wound of sin and division that we might share in everlasting Peace. The Pentecost of the Spirit nourishes the Church with fire and energy to share and proclaim the Good News of Christ in the world.

In the gift of the Incarnation, the Word made flesh, we encounter the wonder of God’s presence in the life of the Church. Through sacramental signs, water reveals the power of God who washes away sins and refreshes the earth with new life. In ordinary bread and wine, transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ, we en-counter sacramental signs that become the spiritual food and drink that sustains us. We become Who we have received. By the laying on of hands and anointing with sacred oil, these sacra-mental signs offer those who receive them the gift of forgiveness, healing, and the courage to spread the Good News of God’s love into the world. For those with the eyes of faith, we see the hand of God at work in His Church and among His Holy People.

Our life with the sacraments are true encounters with the pres-ence and power of God Father, Son, and Spirit in our world. God speaks to hearts and minds that are ready of receive and under-stand. In so many ways, all life is sacred because it is an encoun-ter with the ever present God. Our world is sacred because it com-municates the loving presence of God to us in these profound encounters. This is our gift to the world that we see the sacred in all things, most significantly through signs and symbols that speak of a deeper, spiritual reality. Our Catholic Imagination finds God present not only in the wonder of creation, but in the life of the Church. Through sacramental sign, we celebrate that we are the Lord’s and we belong to Him. We celebrate we experience for-giveness of sin and healing of body, mind, and spirit. We cele-brate our call to love one another as a manifestation of God’s Cov-enant love and our Service to one another as the Priestly call to minister. Finally, the central Sacrament of our Faith, the Eucharist, brings Christ to us that we might become who we receive.

There is no greater gift than this: “Love one another as I have loved you.” When we are open to this profound self-gift of God to us then we have a chance of dedicating the same in the midst of God’s People. It makes sense that the fruit of knowing and loving God is reflected in our service and care for others. May the power of the Holy Spirit descend upon us and remain with us forever. AMEN

AMEN.
