PROJECT ABSTRACT
Introduction The rapid advance of technology has affected many of the activities that were being
carried out, for it has meant a change in the methods, procedures and materials that were
traditionally being used in many of the everyday tasks, both at industrial, and individual
levels.
In the industrial field, robotics has supposed a major change in the way we produce all
kinds of goods and equipment. Additionally, in other areas, this technology push has
had a direct impact on how we carry out other activities. A good example of this is in
jewelry where new possibilities for producing metal parts have appeared.
With the new perspectives offered by technology in the field of jewelry, it has
undertaken this study, trying to use the latest 3D printers and printing materials, to
develop new procedures, methods and materials in the manufacturing process of jewelry.
Aims The main objective of this project is to analyze the behavior of different castable
photosensitive resins during the process of lost wax casting in order to find a resin that
allows printing 3D models to replace wax models obtained during vulcanization.
Process followed
3D printing part includes:
• Designing in 3D with the help of a CAD program pieces to print later.
• With the appropriate software (Creation Workshop) preparing models for
printing.
• Printing the desired models with its corresponding supports.
• Curing the obtained pieces in the UV barrel to harden.
For the preparation of the tree, the oven cycle and the metal smelting, the same
procedure was followed as in the traditional casting process lost wax. First we
proceeded to the formation of a tree trunk with wax, and printed with resin, wax rings
that were attached.
After preparing the coating in the corresponding machine, the investment is poured into
the cylinder with the rings. Once solidified, it’s put into the oven to calcine the resin
following a given cycle. Meanwhile, in an electric furnace the metal will be melting so
that when the oven cycle is complete, the metal will have reached its melting
temperature. The metal is then poured into the cylinder, which will have been removed
from the oven and put into vacuum to ensure the filling of the mold.
Finally, after letting the cylinder rest, it’s carried into the water. This dissolves the
coating, leaving the metal object.

Results With the casting of the first trees a mistake was made: the cylinder was not put in
vacuum. This error caused the rings to be either incomplete or to not show at all.
However, the parts obtained were useful to verify that the resins (both Castsolid and B9
Yellow and Emerald) were calcined without many residues left during combustion.

The last two trees, knowing beforehand what not to do, came out fully and with very
good finish, showing the complex details of the designs.

Economic study With the economic study what was intended was to see which is the most profitable
process: whether the traditional one or the one followed in this project based on 3D
printing. Although the initial idea was to compare different resins economically, only
the Castsolid was available to work with the printer. For this reason the choice was
made to compare printing then rings and then assembling them to the tree, with printing
the whole tree with the rings.
Conclusions Regarding the initial objectives not many resins could have been compared, but the tests
made allowed to check that both the Castsolid and the B9 were completely calcined
which gave great detail to the rings after casting. The realization of the economic study
helped to conclude that the use of 3D printing for producing jewelry is more economical.
As for the choice of printing the full tree or not, it is more profitable to do so, although
the difference with the other procedure is not very noticeable.
