    InnovafunProduct Data Technology

    Some of the reasons are:

the quantity and the quality of product information necessary to sell a product are increasing

the product life is increasing due to reuse and recycle the life of the product data sometimes last longer than the product itself (as in the medical

    and nuclear field)

the information society has an increasing role in any business

products have become more complex due to the development of the materials technology andnew processes

automation is spreading in any phase of the product development, from the design to therecycling

A new branch of technology is rapidly developing:

    the Product Data Technology

    InnovafunIndustry concerns and demands

Most industrial data is generated and stored on computers and otherelectronical devices. This is causing that: many companies are obliged to maintain the hardware and software that has generated that data because it

cannot be interpreted by modern systems.

    The information society is developing very fast and a system becomes obsoleteafter a few months: different computer systems;

different softwares; different program languages; different representation of the data; different structure of the data.

Industry is requiring that their information, besidesbeing perpetual, becomes also independent of

    software systems

    Systems need to be INTEROPERABLE!!!

    InnovafunInteroperability

Interoperability (Def) is the ability of two or more systems or

components to exchange information and to use theinformation that has been exchanged

    IEEE Standard Computer Dictionary

Carnegie Mellon, Software Technology Roadmap, 2004

Enterprise systems and applications need to be

interoperable to achieve seamless operational and businessinteraction, and create networked organizations

    InnovafunMotivations1 for Interoperability

    e-Commerce is not working.

    Market developments have slowed.

    The investment communities have retrenched.

There is an abundance of technical solutions and standards.

    But implementations

    are far from pervasive

are more often than not isolated efforts and lack interoperability.

    There is a need

to go back to the technical basics of what enables business practices in a given

    context

    to re-evaluate interoperability problems

to re-assess the models and value propositions of e-commerce businesses

to build industry confidence and buy-in.

    InnovafunThe SMEs Challenge

SME present a major economic driving force.

However each SME cannot compete with large enterprises on equalbasis. Alone SMEs find it difficult to exploit market opportunities that exceed their

production capacity or ability of some sort.

In an global networked business environment, organizations need to be able todynamically adapt in order to take advantage of market opportunities.

In particular, SMEs need to be able to establish collaborativeactivities Principaly with others, i.e., externaly Willing to be able to compete with big enterprises.

Challenge is on presenting SMEs frameworks that will solve interoperability and integration issues

while facing the major concerns of SMEs when taking emerging technologies

    InnovafunWhat is STEP ISO 10303?

[ISO 10303 is an International Standard for the computer-interpretable representation of product informationand for the exchange of product data. The objective is to provide a neutral mechanism capable of describingproducts throughout their life cycle. This mechanism is suitable not only for neutral file exchange, but also asa basis for implementing and sharing product databases, and as a basis for archiving.]*

ISO 10303, also known as STEP (Standard for the Exchange ofProduct data) is a multi-part open-standard for the computer-interpretable representation of product information and for theexchange of product data under the manufacturing domain.

    InnovafunApplication Protocol (AP)

STEP Application protocols (APs) are information models that capture the

semantics of an industrial requirement and provide standardized structureswithin which data values can be understood by a computer implementation.

An AP defines neutral file formats (ISO 10303 Part 21 and Part 28) which cansupport all the product data required by the application. The neutral file formatscan be used for exchange between CAD, CAE and PDM (Product Data

Management) systems, and for the long term archiving of product data.

Also defines a reference data model that allows to describe context specificindustrial information along the full PLC:

conceptual view of that information (ARM Application Reference Model)

implementable specification (AIM Application Interpreted Model)

Data model is described both textually and graphically using the EXPRESS (ISO10303 Part 11) modeling language.

    InnovafunSTEP Strengths - STEP Weaknesses

Contains more than forty APs focused on ProductData Modeling

Large body of standardized, rigourously defined (byindustry people) technical concepts

Based on public data models, open architecture andsharable data, allowing companies to effectivelyexchange and share product information

Supports design reuse and provide access to dataacross all stages of PLM

Can integrate all Product Data providing a singlestandard Product Data Storage.

STEP modeling language (EXPRESS - ISO 10303-11)is very powerful.

Recent studies proved that the use STEP couldgenerate savings of about $1 bilion per year in the USautomotive, aerospace, and ship building industries(PDES, Inc)

Traditionally exchanged using ISO 10303-21(Part 21) Part 21 is an ASCII character based syntax, which

lacks extensibility and is hard for humans toread.

However recently XML structure (Part 28) wasalso introduced

STEP modeling language (EXPRESS) is complex andunfamiliar to most application developers

Lack of low-cost support Characteristic essential for reduced budget

    organizations
