The Renewable Energies and the German Energy Transition changes the system of energy generation and distribution. Further the distribution network operators (DNO) are becoming Smart Grid operators.

- What are the changes caused by renewable energies?

- What means intelligence in the network?

off grid areas be helpfully in the future?

• Project IRENE: “Integration of renewable energies and electro mobility” • Project IREN2: “Intelligent power grids, Microgrids and battery storages”

Both Projects in the town Wildpoldsried Rural area – approx. 2500 habitants High percentage of renewable energy feed in (P = 8.175 MW)

(situation in 2011 comparable with expected status of 2020 in Germany) produces 2.5 – 3 times more energy than they use

• The gird is able to supply approx. 10,000 electrical vehicles in the Allgäu region (Scenario 2020: 1 Mio EV’s in Germany)

• Stationary battery storage systems can be integrated usefully in the distribution grid

The Energy Transition and the upcoming Nuclear Power phase-out changes the energy production and distribution systems:fewer big scale power plants results in a reduction of services like

• Reactive power supply• Black start capability after an error

Microgrid in Wildpoldsried The existing grid was expanded: Control technology, battery storage systems, flexible and converter-controlled DC-link between MV and LV level, synchronization and protection equipment, two back-up generators (vegetable oil and biodiesel)

Research objectives:• Operation as an island grid –

disconnected from the main grid

• Utilization of the Microgrid as a topological power plant (provision of ancillary services)

• Stable and economically optimized grid operation

IREN2 is the first Microgrid test of its kind outside of a laboratory.

Microgrid – island operation

What a Microgrid provides:• Plants have to ensure grid stability

at all times – particularly with fluctuating power infeed from solar and wind power.

• A control system maintains the balance between generation and consumption – this provides for autonomous operation.

Renewable and conventional energy production units form a hybrid structure. This ensures grid stability and optimizes efficiency during operation.

A Microgrid enables the profitable use of renewable resources independently of the supply grid.

Microgrid – topological power plants

A Microgrid provides ancillary services from the distribution grid for the market.

What a topological power plant provides:

• The potential for ancillary services is predicted.• If ancillary services are agreed upon, the

Microgrid has to be capable of supplying them at any time.• A control system ensures that the

distributed energy sources provide ancillary services in addition to normal operation.

At times the Microgrid can replace conventional power plants by supplying ancillary services.

All applications tried and tested in Germany‘s Allgäu region could be used in other applications world wide:

• Rural areas with an increasing demand for energy• Geographic islands and • Regions without grid connection• Self-contained industrial grids
