NEWS FROM FRANCERuins of Roman Street Excavated in Paris

In the centre of Paris’s Latin Quarter, archaeologists areexcavating the vestige of four houses and a street from ancientLutèce. The ruins, which date back to the first and secondcenturies A.D., are part of the second neighbourhood discoveredin the ancient Gallo-roman city. The excavated street isapproximately 6 metres wide and is bordered by sidewalks. .

The first floors of the houses, built around the beginning ofthe century, were constructed with cob, a mixture of clay andstraw to build walls. By the middle of the century, masons beganbuilding the upper floors with large stones. Remnants of paintedmurals and heating systems have also been uncovered. The ruinswere discovered underneath the garden of a courtyard from an

ancient visitation nunnery near la rue St. Jaques in 1910, butonly today are they finally being examined. Director of theexcavation team, Didier Busson, and other archaeologists fromthe National Institute of Preventive Archaeology Research(INRAP) concluded their work on the site by last June. Later, auniversity building was set to be built on the site to help preservethe ruins.

Lutèce, a Gallo-roman city founded at the beginning of thecommon era, extended 270 acres from the Seine to the top of thehill Saint-Geneviève. Archaeologists have already uncoveredprinciple prehistoric monuments of Lutèce including a forum (rueSoufflot), a theatre (rue Racine), an amphitheatre (rue Monge)and thermal baths (boulevard Saint-Germaine).Source: News from France – French Embassy Press &Information ServiceNEXT ISSUE: History of the Cannes Film Festival
