Haciendo un poco de

historia

Let’s make some

Next Friday will begin in the city of Auckland, New Zealand, the XIII ISF Men’s World Championship, with the participation of 16 teams that come to this city from all the continents. This is the third time this tournament is played in New Zealand. In 1976 the third edition was held in Lower Hutt; and Christchurch did so in 2004, for the XI edition of the event.

The history of the ISF World Championship dates back to 1966 when Mexico City hosted the first ISF Men’s World Championship. In this edition the United States would stand with the gold medal, beating Mexico in the final game of the tournament. The third place went to New Zealand. Twelve editions have been played continuously since that time, every four years. The only exception to this rule was the last WC in Canada in 2009, when the sport spent five years between 2004 edition and Saskatoon. This was because the ISF decided to take five years between this WC to not overlap the Men’s competition with the running of the Olympic

Games.

Six countries have hosted a Major Men’s World Championship ISF: Mexico (1966), United States (1968 - 1980 - 1984 to 1996), the Philippines (1972-1992), New Zealand (1976-2004), Canada (1988 - 2009) and South Africa (2000).

Only four countries had climb to the top of the podium in this events: United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Both the U.S. and New Zeal have won five World Championships, while Canada has won the crown three times and Australia did it in the last edition for the first time. The curious thing about it occurred in 1976, when three teams (Canada, USA and New Zealand) were proclaimed champions because the final games were rained out.

Besides the mentioned four countries that were crowned world champions, only three other teams have been able to get on the podium: Mexico was runner up in the first Worlds edition, in 1966, and third in the second edition of the World Championship in 1970 in Oklahoma City; another country that has been on the podium is Bahamas, which in 1980 was bronze medal in Tacoma, United States; and the last country to be among the three best teams in the tournament is Japan , which was bronze in 1996 in Midland, United States, and silver in 2000, in South Africa.

Among the most impressive stories of the World Championships, certainly is the game between the United States and New Zealand, in 1976. This is the longest game in history, as they played 20 innings to decide the winner. If this were not enough, the left-hander Ty Stofflet stamped his name forever in the great history of Softball in this legendary game pitching a 20 innings no-hitter against New Zealand, and drove in the only run of the game with a single, to claim the victory by 1-0. Ty Stofflet pitched perfect

ball for 18 2/3 innings, when a New Zealand batter finally reached first base after being hit by pitch. During the game, Stofflet stroke out 32 hitters. Stofflet set the record for strikeouts in a single game with 32. In addition, the American hurler has the record for most innings pitched without receiving a run in a World Championship, with 59 that year. In the other hand we have to mention the work of Kevin Herlihy, New Zealand pitcher in this game, who shut out the United States for more than 19 periods.

However, other pitchers have molded the history of the sport with his pitches, throwing a perfect game in the World Championship. Joe Lynch and Chuck Richard (USA) in 1966 combined to pitch a perfect game, in what was the first one in history. However, the first to accomplish that feat individually was Canadian Dave Ruthowsky, who did it in 1976. However, if we speak about perfect games, the 1984 World Championship in Midland was a special one because there were three perfect games in the same tournament. Jim Cowdery and Gene McWillie (Canada), Reggie Knowles (Bahamas) and Kevin Herlihy (New Zealand) made history.

The funny thing is that Jim Cowdery and Gene McWillie (Canada) combined again in 1988 for his second perfect game. The only pitcher who has achieved this feat twice is Michael White from New Zealand, who pitched perfect games in 1988 and 1996, in the final game of the latter competition.

In this sense, the 2009 Worlds put two Australians pitchers in the center of the stage, carrying their team to the championship: Adam Folkard and Andrew Kirkpatrick. The first one not only was the winning pitcher in the final, but also threw a no-hitter game against the New Zealand team. Meanwhile, Kirkpatrick pitched a five inning perfect game in the 8-0 victory against Argentina.

On the offensive side the numbers are also interesting. The 1988 World Championship (played in Saskatoon) was a contest of offensive records. The player with the highest batting average in the history is Clark Bosch, with an average of .647, while the best sluggers in a single tournament are Brian Rothrock from USA and Marty Kernaghan from Canada, with 8 homers each one. These two players also set a record for total bases with 46. However, Rothrock set the record for RBIs with 23, while Kernaghan holds the record for runs scored with 19.

A new page in the history of the sport will be written next week. From March 1-10, the world’s best players seek glory in the next ISF Men’s World Championship, and raise their names to the Olympus of our sport.

Men’s Softball returns to

Pan American Games

Men’s Softball first appeared at the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, but was not selected to the 2007 and 2011 Pan American Games. Now will make its return in 2015.

The Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) approved the reinstatement of Men’s Softball as an official sport for the next Pan American Games to be held in Toronto, Canada, in 2015. This way, the Men’s competition returns to the maximum continental sport event after twelve years of absence, since his last appearance was in Santo Domingo 2003, where Argentina won the bronze medal.

PASO decided to reinstate Men’s Softball to the Pan American family on its last Extraordinary General Assembly, which was held in Kingston, Jamaica, on

February.

This is great news for continental Men’s Softball, which was not included in the program for editions of Rio 2007 and Guadalajara 2011. The Pan American Games are the second largest multi-sport event in the world, only behind the Olympics Games, so the participation in this competition is very important for athletes in particular and for the Softball as sport.

This confirmation puts Softball Argentina facing a great opportunity, as our National Team was third place in the last three continental competitions, including the bronze medal at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo 2003. Moreover, Argentina was third in the Pan American Championships in Hermosillo 2006, and recently returned to the podium at the Pan American Championships in

Argentina en el podio de Santo Domingo 2003. Esa fue la última aparición del Softbol Masculino en los Juegos Panamericanos / Argentina on the podium in Santo Domingo 2003. That was the last appearence of

Medellin 2012. Thus, Men’s Softball will be a real chance of medal for Argentina for the Games in Toronto, bringing a big challenge and opportunity for our Softball family.

Softball debut at the Pan American Games was in 1979, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, both in the Women and Men side. Softball had a continuous presence with both disciplines through Rio 2007, when the men were excluded from the continental party, a decision extended into Guadalajara 2011. However, in Toronto 2015 will see the eighth edition of Men’s competition in the Pan American Games.

Argentina Senior National Team receives a new motivation before the start of the ISF World Championship: give to Argentina a new Pan American medal. Toronto 2015, here we come!
