ESCUELA
SUGERENCIAS
¡Padres y maestros!

SCHOOL
SUGGESTIONS
Parents and Teachers! Make sure to coach your kids to drink water every day by setting a great example.
You are their best role model!
Encourage yourkids to choose water or white milk with meals at home and dining out.
Blend/add WHOLE or FROZEN fruits to sparklingor regular water for variety.
Put bottles or pitchers ofwater in your fridge for quick access to a cold drink.
Reusable water bottles keep kids hydrated all day longand help save the planet!
Add a school logo for agreat fundraising idea!
Water is the healthiest choice foryour kids.
Replace sugary drinks with water!
Try to keep your house free ofsugarybeverages so your kids will drink water.
Juices (even 100% fruit juice) are high in sugar. Limit to no more than 1 cup (4-8 oz.) per day. Just because a product has “water” in the title doesn’t mean it is healthy—check the label on all “healthy” drinks for sugar.
Healthy drinks, such as water and skim or 1% milk, are “GO”drinks. Always try to satisfy kids’ thirst with “GO” drinks to limit sugar intake. Drink as much as you like!
Encourage kids to drink water during the ENTIRE day, not just at meals.
Tap water is safe, clean,
and free!
Schools should make water an available and attractive choice by: • Not selling sugary drinks in vending machines • Ensuring water fountains are working well • Providing cold tap water in lunch lines
Even mild dehydration can impact a student’s ability to learn.
Drinking sugary drinks can hinder a student’s ability to focus and lead to poor academic performance.
GOfood
MILK
Consider adding gooseneck spouts to water fountains or hydration stations for easy water bottle filling.

PTA HISTORIA EN RIDGETOP ... AMIGOS?
NEXT AMIGOS PTA MEETING – FEB 23 The next PTA meeting will be Friday, February 23rd, 7:45 a.m. in the library.
DUAL LANGUAGE COMMITTEE – FEB 26 If you weren't able to attend our meeting last night please put the next one on your calendar. The next Dual Language Committee meeting will be Monday, February 26t , at 7:45 AM in the library! Be on the lookout for the topic we will be discussing in the weeks to come via FB, e-mail, or the Wednesday folder.
PTA HISTORY AT RIDGETOP...AMIGOS? What is the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) or “Ridgetop Amigos”? In 2011, Ridgetop parents and community were unsure how to proceed as a PTA. There were preconceived ideas of what a PTA is, and there were many that didn’t even know what PTA is and made the community question it’s cultural appropriateness for this community. The Austin ISD recognizes PTA’s as the chosen group of organized parent/teacher action for every school, and so this prompted our community to slowly adopt the policies and rituals of a traditional PTA, but slowly. We called ourselves (and still do) “AMIGOS”, because as an official Dual Language school this ultimately captured what we were trying to do as we were building a parent-teacher organization that unified, embraced the dual language pillars (biculturism, bilingualism, & biliteracy) and was built upon trust and inclusion to work for the betterment of our kids. Every child, one voice.
National Wear Red Day®.
WELLNESS CORNER
February is American Heart Month Find time to be active. Adults need at least 2
hours and 30 minutes of moderate physical activity (i.e., brisk walking) per week. Invite fitness buddies on an afternoon stroll, try an exercise class, or challenge the whole family to a soccer match.
Make healthy eating a habit. Small changes in your eating habits can make a big difference. Try making healthier versions of your favorite recipes. How? Look for ways to lower sodium and trans fat, and add more fruits and vegetables. For example, use more spices and less salt to flavor your food.
Quit tobacco—for good. Smoking cigarettes and using other tobacco products affects nearly every organ in your body, including your heart.Quitting can be tough, but it can be easier when you feel supported. Text QUIT to 47848 to get free 24/7 quit help texted to your phone!
Know your numbers. High blood pressure and high cholesterol are major risk factors for heart disease. Ask your health care team to check your blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels regularly and help you take steps to control your levels.
National Wear Red Day®. Help the American Heart Association celebrate American Heart Month and raise heart disease awareness by participating in National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 2, 2018.
