Each entry begins with some kind of problem, a real problem I have encountered with regard to family rela-tionships, and discusses solutions based upon Catho-lic spiritual practice, tradition, and scripture. The theme that arises is one of protecting and guiding the family from real world issues through Catholic Chris-tian theology. Our society places much emphasis on the idea of equality, and yet our world is filled with inequalities and injustices. It is easy to find examples of inequality in the world, and there are endless news stories about situations where the basic dignity of the human being has been degraded in one way or another. These sto-ries are upsetting to us, because each of us knows in our heart there is something more essential to the human being than gender, race, religion or nationality. There is something inexplicably sacred about equality. Jesus understood this when he told the parable of the good Samaritan as a way of explaining his command-ment “love your neighbor as yourself.” This parable has strong social commentary - Samari-tans at the time were considered second class citi-zens, and the priest and Levite avoided the wounded traveler out of fear of becoming religiously unclean. But the Samaritan did not pause to consider these complex social-religious issues. He simply acted out of compassion toward the person in front of him. The nationality, class, religion or philosophy of the traveler are not even mentioned by Jesus. In our day and age, the stories of turmoil from around the world can be overwhelming. It is sometimes diffi-cult to imagine that being kind and patient to the peo-ple immediately around us can make a difference. We might ask ourselves “If war is happening in the Middle East, then what does it matter if I have an angry out-burst in front of my children?” The fact is that loving the people in our daily lives as much as we love our-selves is at the heart of equality, it is a simple and sure way of creating the equality we want in our world. It is an act that puts us beyond our limited selves and allows us to see things from God’s point of view. You and I might not be able to single-handedly put an end to war, but if we can teach our children how to create sacred equality through love, then we are making the world a better place.

2018 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

(From New Sunday & Holy Day Liturgies by Flor McCarthy, SDB Year B.)

On a hill near Cape Town, South Africa, just below the famed Table Mountain, a gun is fired every day at noon. The hill is known as Signal Hill. The firing of the gun once served a beau-tiful purpose. It signaled that a ship, on its way to or from India, had arrived in the harbor with a cargo of goods, and was in need of supplies of food and fresh water. A beautiful exchange resulted. There was receiving and giving. But that was a long time ago. The purpose no longer exists. Yet the gun is still fired dutifully every day. However, the firing is now little more than an empty ritual. Once it had a beautiful meaning. Now the meaning has gone out of it. Most of the local people ignore it. Visitors are told, ‘If you hear a loud bang at mid-day, don’t worry. It’s only the gun going off.’ However the ritual still has one thing going for it. Most peo-ple know the story behind it. If that story were to be lost, then the ritual would become pooper still. The Eucharist celebrated a wonderful event - the gift which Jesus made of his life on our behalf. Every time we celebrate the Eucharist we tell that story again. But like that is repeated over and over again, there is a danger that it may become just a ritual. In the Eucharist Jesus nourishes us with the bread of life. But it’s not meant to be one-way traffic. Having received from Jesus, we are expected to give something in return - not to him but to one another. Often the Eucharist doesn’t produce the effect it is meant to produce - unselfish giving of oneself in the service of others. We keep giving out the bread and the cup. ‘this is my body, given for you … This is my blood, poured out for you.’ Yet it seems to have little effect on people. We don’t see a people who pour out their lives in the service of others. The people who eat the bread and drink the cup every day often are living self-centered lives. For the Hebrews, remembering was not a mere recalling. It was the making present to each generation of the saving events of the past. In the same way, the Eucharist is no mere making present of Christ’s body and blood, but is a proclama-tion and a memorial of his life-giving death. The Eucharist is the heat of everything. But it can never be separated from the washing of the feet. The two realities are linked - being in communion with Jesus so that we can be in communion with others.
