Pasa el otoño en Madrid y la ciudad se prepara para vivir momentos muy especiales. La celebración de la Davis Cup coincide con una nueva edición del Festival Internacional de Jazz de Madrid, con la presencia de grandes figuras como Joe Lovano, Charles Tolliver, Marcia Ball o David Villares, encargados de poner la banda sonora a un mes repleto de arte.

La Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson acaba de inaugurar sede en el barrio de Chamberí, con una muestra en la que podrán verse más de cien obras de su colección. Gracias, precisamente, a un acuerdo entre la Fundación y Madrid Destino se quedará un año más en la plaza de Colón la escultura Julia, de Jaume Plensa. Goya, en el Museo del Prado, y los impresionistas, en el Thyssen-Bornemisza, son también protagonistas de este noviembre en el que en el Teatro Español resonarán Ecos y en el recinto ferial de la Casa de Campo, latidos de emoción ante las acrobacias del Cirque du Soleil.

We’re well into autumn now, and Madrid is gearing up for some very special moments. The Davis Cup will coincide with a new edition of the Madrid International Jazz Festival featuring big names like Joe Lovano, Charles Tolliver, Marcia Ball and David Villares, who will provide the soundtrack for a month full of art.

The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation has just inaugurated its new headquarters in the Chamberí neighbourhood with an exhibition of over one hundred works from its collection. We also have the foundation –and the agreement it signed with Madrid Destino– to thank for the fact that Jaume Plensa’s sculpture Julia will remain in Plaza de Colón for yet another year. Further highlights this November include Goya at the Prado Museum, the Impressionists at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Ecos at Teatro Español, and the thrilling acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil in Casa de Campo.

Noviembre es sinónimo de jazz en Madrid. La ciudad se convierte en la capital mun-dial de este género musical, con más de 130 conciertos, además de muchas otras actividades paralelas (cine, danza, clases magistrales…). La diversidad estética, la visión contemporánea y aventurera, el jazz vocal y el blues, la expresividad flamenca o la oferta local son algunas de las señas de identidad de la programación de este año.

In November jazz takes over Madrid, as more than 130 concerts and scores of par-allel activities (film, dance, master classes and more) turn the city into the global jazz capital. Aesthetic diversity, an adventur-ous, contemporary outlook, vocal jazz and blues, flamenco expressiveness and local offerings are some of the hallmarks of this year’s programme.

La guitarra bronca de Mike Stern será la primera que se escuche en la que es la sede principal del festival. El día 13 esta-rá arropado por los estallidos de energía de la batería de Dennis Chambers, el acalambramiento del bajo eléctrico de Jimmy Haslip y la sonoridad rotunda de los teclados de Jeff Lorber. Tras él llega-rá, el día 14, el saxofonista Joe Lovano al frente del trío Tapestry, y el día 15 la cantante neoyorquina Stacey Kent. Boo-gie woogie, cajún, blues de los pantanos, country y rock and roll son algunos de los estilos robustos que, bien abrazados, destila el alambique de las aventuras de Marcia Ball, a quien podremos ver el día 16. Eliane Elias mostrará al público, un día después, su compleja técnica al piano.

Completan el programa el trompetista Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah (día 19), que presenta los temas de Ancestral recall, con sonidos muy de Nueva Orleans; Youn Sun Nah Trio (día 20), que tan bien representa la adaptación del jazz a la rea-lidad actual; el pianista italiano Giovanni Guidi y la cantante francesa Mina Agossi (día 21); Patricia Barber y su voz oscu-ra, repleta de emociones de blues (día 23); el cubano Roberto Fonseca, piano, teclados y voz (día 24), Guillermo McGill,

Next up will be saxophonist Joe Lovano on the 14th, leading the band Trio Tapes-try, followed by singer Stacey Kent from New York on the 15th. Boogie woogie, Cajun music, swamp blues, country and rock and roll are just some of the power-ful styles that Marcia Ball embraces and boldly makes her own. She will perform on the 16th. One day later, Eliane Elias will wow the audience with her technical piano skills.

con su Flamenco Trane, homenaje des-de el jazz y el flamenco a John Coltrane (día 26); la talentosa cantante noruega Rebekka Baken; ese trío de ases que son Benavent, Di Geraldo y Pardo, la apues-ta más definitiva del flamenco renovado (día 29), y el pianista Moisés P. Sánchez, que nos trae el temario de su nuevo álbum, There’s always madness (día 30).

Podremos escuchar también en el mis-mo escenario a grandes bandas de jazz madrileñas, como son la Arturo Soria Big Band (día 16), la Amaniel Big Band (día 23) y la Creativa Big Band (día 27). Toda una apuesta por la música y la crea-ción local.

La otra sede principal del festival será el Auditorio Caja de Música de CentroCen-tro, que arranca la programación el día 6 con el trompetista Charles Tolliver, con un concierto en el que revisará su disco Paper man, de cuya publicación se cumplieron 50 años en 2018. El día 7 será el turno de la inconformista y suge-rente pianista Myra Melford, el día 8 de Susan Santos, guitarra y voz, y el día 9 de María Toro, síntesis perfecta del jazz y el flamenco. El pianista cubano Omar Sosa llegará el día 12 a CentroCentro, por donde también pasará la pianista Kontxi Lorente (día 14).

The programme at the festival’s other main hub, Caja de Música Auditorium in CentroCentro Cultural Centre, will kick off on the 6th with a concert by trumpet player Charles Tolliver, in which he will review the songs from his album Paper Man. 2018 marked the 50th year since its release. The 7th will feature the intriguing, unconventional pianist Myra Melford, fol-lowed by the guitar and vocals of Susan Santos on the 8th and María Toro, with her perfect blend of jazz and flamenco, on the 9th. Cuban pianist Omar Sosa will arrive at CentroCentro on the 12th, and the same venue will also host pianist Kontxi Lorente on the 14th.

La saxofonista y compositora Nubya García inaugura la programación el día 7 en Conde Duque. El día 17 la cantante Noa Lur y los músicos que la acompañan harán las delicias de niños y mayores con versiones muy especiales de temas como Hakuna Matata de El Rey León. El día 22 se estrena en JazzMadrid el pianista cubano David Virelles, que, para este concierto ha invitado a los músicos fla-mencos Jesús de Rosario y Lucky Losada, con los que desarrolla un proyecto con-junto titulado Patas. Los músicos Peter Brötzmann (saxo) y Heather Leigh (pedal steel guitar), pondrán el broche final a la programación en este escenario con su propuesta en los márgenes del free jazz.

The programme at Conde Duque Cul-tural Centre will kick off on the 7th with a performance by saxophonist and com-poser Nubya García. On the 17th, singer Noa Lur and fellow musicians will delight children and adults alike with some very special renditions of songs like Hakuna Matata from The Lion King. On the 22nd, Cuban pianist David Virelles will give his first performance at JazzMadrid. He has invited flamenco musicians Jesús de Rosario and Lucky Losada, his partners in the project Patas, to perform with him at this concert. Musicians Peter Brötzmann (sax) and Heather Leigh (pedal steel gui-tar) will wind up the programme at this venue with a collaboration that explores the fringes of free jazz.

Además de los escenarios principa-les, el festival tendrá citas en diferentes salas, como la sala Galileo Galilei, donde el día 22 actúan el guitarrista John Sco-field y John Clayer, o la Sala Clamores, en donde podremos disfrutar de artistas como el trompetista Wallace Roney (día 12) y Ron Carter (día 16), voz superlati-va del contrabajo. El festival tendrá citas también en los distritos, como el Ciclo de Jazz de Ciudad Lineal.

Un total de 27 espectáculos y más de una decena de experiencias escénicas a cargo de artistas y compañías de once países conforman en este 2019 el cartel del Festival de Otoño. Una cita siempre muy esperada, en la que podremos ver en escena las propuestas más auda-ces del momento, como demuestra la presencia de la directora polaca Maja Klezckeswka, que visita por primera vez España con la pieza Under the Influence, basada en el filme de John Cassavetes Una mujer bajo la influencia, que podrá verse los días 20 y 21 en la Sala Verde de los Teatros del Canal. su generación. Con su Orestes in Mosul demostrará al público por qué es uno de los artistas más transgresores de la esce-na europea. JoStrømgren, uno de los directores y coreógrafos más aplaudidos de Noruega, llegará a El Pavón Teatro Kamikaze (días 23 y 24) con The Door para borrar las fronteras entre el teatro y danza de la mano del Lituanian National Drama Theatre.

En el programa destacan también peque-ñas joyas, como el teatro performance de los belgas garçongarçon con GENZ: searching for beauty (días 15, 16 y 17) o el trabajo multidisciplinar del premiado artista sueco Markus Örhn, que trae a Madrid Bergman in Uganda (días 22, 23 y 24), un espectáculo en los márgenes de la videoinstalación, el arte dramáti-co y la performance, ambos en La Casa Encendida.

The 2019 Autumn Festival programme will include 27 performances and more than ten performing arts experiences by artists and companies from eleven different countries. The event, always eagerly awaited, will give us a chance to see today’s edgiest offerings performed onstage. The presence of Polish director Maja Kleczewska is a testament to this. She will visit Spain for the first time with her play Under the Influence, based on John Cassavetes’ film A Woman Under the Influence. It will be performed on the 20th and 21st in Sala Verde hall at Teatros del Canal. Sala Roja will host Alain Platel and his acclaimed company Les Ballets C de la B on the 21st and 22nd, when they will present Requiem pour L. alongside Fabrizio Cassol. On the 30th it will wel-come Milo Rau, whom many consider to be the most influential director of his generation. His Orestes in Mosul will leave

the audience with no doubt as to why he is one of the most iconoclastic artists on the European scene. Jo Strømgren, one of Norway’s most acclaimed directors and choreographers, will be at El Pavón Teatro Kamikaze (23rd and 24th) with The Door, a production by the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre that blurs the boundary between theatre and dance.

The programme also features some lit-tle gems, such as GENZ: Searching for Beauty, a performance piece by Belgian company garçongarçon (15th, 16th and 17th), and the multidisciplinary work of award-winning Swedish artist Markus Örhn, who will bring Madrid his Bergman in Uganda (22nd, 23rd and 24th), a piece that lies somewhere between video instal-lation, dramatic art and performance art. Both of them will be shown at La Casa Encendida.

También habrá durante el festival una completa panorámica de la mejor crea-ción escénica española. Toda una oda a la resistencia en su apuesta por visibilizar y reivindicar el trabajo de compañías que llevan tres décadas a la vanguardia, como El Canto de la Cabra (Gota a gota, El Pavón Teatro Kamikaze, días 22 y 23) o Mal Pelo (On Goldberg Variations / Varia-tions, Teatros del Canal, días 26 y 27). La escena latinoamericana estará represen-tada por, entre otros, la enérgica troupe chilena de La Re-Sentida (Paisajes para no colorear, Teatro de La Abadía, del 21 al 24) y los argentinos Claudio Tolcachir (Próximo, Teatro de La Abadía, del 28 al 30) y Fernando Rubio, que propone una experiencia innovadora, con siete camas para siete espectadores (Todo lo que está a mi lado, Teatros del Canal, del 15 al 17), en la que cuenta con la complicidad de actrices como Susi Sánchez y María Mora-les. Además, tendrá lugar un homenaje especial a la artista portuguesa Helena Almeida y a Federico García Lorca.

The festival will also feature a compre-hensive overview of the best Spanish performing arts creations. It’s an ode to resistance, in line with its mission of showcasing and promoting the work of companies that have been in the creative vanguard for three decades, such as El Canto de la Cabra (Gota a gota, El Pavón Teatro Kamikaze, 22nd and 23rd) and Mal Pelo (On Goldberg Variations / Variations, Teatros del Canal, 26th and 27th). La ciudad de Madrid ha sido designada por la Federación Internacional de Tenis como sede para este 2019, y también para el próximo año, de la nueva Fase Final de la prestigiosa Copa Davis, el mayor torneo del tenis internacional, con más de un siglo de historia. La competición comenzó en 1900, cuando Estados Unidos retó a Gran Bretaña, que compitió entonces bajo el nombre de Islas Británicas. El torneo se escenificó en el Longwood Cricket Club en Boston y los estadounidenses dieron

la sorpresa consiguiendo una inalcanza-ble ventaja de 3-0. La idea de la Copa Davis fue concebida un año antes por cuatro miembros del equipo de tenis de la Universidad de Harvard. Uno de ellos, Dwight Davis, diseñó el formato y ordenó la adquisición de un trofeo, comprándolo con su propio dinero.

Ha pasado mucho tiempo desde enton-ces y hoy todo es distinto. El torneo que veremos en La Caja Mágica estrena un nuevo modelo de competición. Francia, Croacia, España y Estados Unidos, por haber sido semifinalistas de la última Copa Davis, y Argentina y Gran Bretaña, que recibieron sendas invitaciones oficiales, se clasificaron directamente para esta fase final en la que participan 18 selecciones, divididas en seis grupos de tres equipos. Cada eliminatoria consiste en tres par-tidos, dos individuales y un doble, a un máximo de tres sets. Los seis ganadores de grupo más los dos equipos clasifica-dos en segundo puesto con los mejores registros -basados en el porcentaje de sets ganados, seguidos por los juegos y los puntos logrados-, pasarán a cuartos de final.

Los cuatro semifinalistas tendrán acceso directo a las finales de la Copa Davis de Madrid 2020. Los países clasificados del quinto al decimosexto puesto competirán 14

The city of Madrid was chosen by the Inter-national Tennis Federation to host the 2019 and 2020 finals of the prestigious Davis Cup, the world’s biggest international ten-nis tournament, which has a history span-ning more than a century. The competition began in 1900 when the United States issued a challenge to Great Britain, which competed under the name The British Isles back then. The tournament was held at Longwood Cricket Club in Boston, and

the Americans surprised their opponents by achieving an unassailable 3-0 lead. The idea for the Davis Cup was conceived one year earlier by four members of Harvard University’s tennis team. One of them, Dwight Davis, designed its format and ordered a trophy, buying it with his own money.

A lot of time has passed since then, and everything has changed. The tournament that we’ll see at Caja Mágica will feature a new competition format. France, Croatia, Spain and the USA, the semifinalists of the last Davis Cup, automatically qualified for this year’s final stage, and Argentina and the UK were invited as the wildcard teams. The final will include 18 teams, divided into six groups of three. Each tie (elimination round) will consist of three rubbers: two singles matches and one doubles match, with a maximum of three

sets. The six group winners plus the two second-highest ranking teams, with the best records based on percentage of sets won (followed by games won), will advance to the quarter-finals.

The four semi-finalists will automatically qualify for the 2020 Davis Cup Finals in Madrid. The countries that finish in 5th to 16th position will compete in next year’s qualifier, while the two lowest-placed teams will be relegated to Zone Group action. Spain has won the coveted trophy five times. Rafael Nadal is the player with the most consecutive wins in Davis Cup history, having won 23 straight singles and doubles matches combined. He also ranks third for consecutive singles match wins, with 24. All eyes will be on him –and on Serbian player Novak Djokovic– at the final, where Croatia will defend its title in what’s sure to be a thrilling competition.

TSIFEMA MADRID HORSE WEEK

La séptima edición de este gran encuentro ecuestre convertirá a Madrid en la ciudad hípica por excelen-cia durante el último fin de semana de noviembre con una programación repleta de novedades. En el ámbito deportivo podremos disfrutar, por segunda vez en España, de la Copa del Mundo de Doma Clá-sica, además de la III Copa Maestros de la Vaquera, la Copa del Mundo de Salto y un CSI2*. En el Salón del Caballo habrá espectáculos, exhibiciones y acti-vidades lúdicas y didácticas como demostraciones de doma western, doma natural y volteo. Los más pequeños tendrán a su disposición un Pony Park en el que recibirán su bautismo hípico.

The seventh edition of this major equestrian event will turn the city into the global horse-riding capital par excellence over the last weekend of Novem-ber, with a programme full of new features. For the second time in Spain, the programme will include the Dressage World Cup. It will also feature the 3rd Maestros de la Vaquera Cup (a Cowboy Dressage competition), the Jumping World Cup and a CSI2* event. The Horse Show will host displays, demon-strations and fun and educational activities such as Western dressage, natural dressage and vault-ing demonstrations. The little ones will be able to enjoy the Pony Park, which will initiate them into the equestrian world.

Los museos Cerralbo, Lázaro Galdiano, Artes Decorativas, del Romanticismo y Sorolla conforman el grupo Cinco Museos, que durante este mes ofrecen una serie de visitas guiadas en las que los visitantes podrán, a través de la selección de una serie de estancias en cada uno de ellos, reconstruir una casa ideal. Un jardín, un Salón de Baile, una escalera de honor, la cocina… Durante el recorrido se hará hin-capié en estos espacios seleccionados y su importancia.

The Five Museums is a group made up of the Cerralbo, Lázaro Galdiano, Decora-tive Arts, Romanticism and Sorolla muse-ums. This month they will offer a number of guided tours for visitors, who will be able to recreate their ideal home from a selection of rooms in each of the museums. A garden, a ballroom, a grand staircase, the kitchen… Along the tour, emphasis will be placed on these areas and their particular importance.

La feria decana de Madrid en el sector del automóvil y la motocicleta de colección celebra este año su 17ª edición. Retromóvil mostrará una vez más un perfecto equilibrio entre piezas centenarias, coches deportivos y otros que, en su momento, tuvieron un importante eco social. Además, los aficiona-dos podrán conmemorar los 50 años del Seat 124 Sport, el deportivo de lujo español de la época, del que se exhibirán diferentes unidades de este mode-lo. La novedad de este año es la celebración de un Concurso de Elegancia para vehículos de dos y cuatro ruedas.

Once again Retromóvil, Madrid’s longest-running classic auto and motorcycle show, now in its 17th edition, will strike the perfect balance between pieces over a hundred years old, sports cars and other vehicles that had a big social impact in their time. Enthusiasts will also be able to mark the 50th anniversary of the Seat 124 Sport, the luxury Span-ish sports car of that era. Several different examples of the model will be displayed. Luis Coloma wrote a story about Pérez the Mouse (the Spanish equivalent of the tooth fairy) to comfort King Alfonso XIII when he was a child and had just lost one of his milk teeth. This much-loved character used to live right here, where a museum now delights youngsters from far and wide.
