THE LUNGS• The lungs are the essential organs of respiration. They are two

in number and are separated by the heart and other contents of the mediastinum. Both lungs have a conical shape and a light porous spongy texture. The lungs consist of tiny thin-walled spaces of air called alveoli. The blood is oxygenated in the walls of the alveoli. The lungs float in water and crepitate when they are handled due to the presence of air in the alveoli. At birth, the lungs have a pinkish-white colour, in adult life the colour is dark grey, mottled in patches and as age advances, this mottling takes on a black colour. The right lung usually weighs about 625 g. and the left one, 567 g. but this may change.
