Rain gardens to manageextreme rainfall events(Trondheim, Norway)
Rain gardensRain garden are lower areas in thelandscape that allow rain waterrunoff to be absorbed into theground. A rain garden looks justlike any cultivated garden and mayattract birds, butterflies and wildflowers. Rain gardens in citiesserve a double purpose: they reducethe water load on the sewersystem in case of heavy rains andserve as green havens for animalsand humans. Rain gardens can beused everywhere human structuressuch as asphalt and pavementprevent infiltration, and werevegetation can be planted. It is aflexible tool to store water and tocreate a more diverse landscapein the city. An extra benefit is thatpolluted surface water will bepurified to some extend when itinfiltrates the filter media.
