El land art es una corriente artística surgida en la década de los años setenta del siglo XIX.
Tiene como fin trasladar el trabajo artístico a los espacios naturales, los cuales son transformados por el pensamiento y la acción del artista.
Sus creaciones usan el paisaje como soporte (escenario) o materia prima de la obra.

Caracterización
Alterar, con un sentido artístico, la superficie de la Tierra.Utiliza el propio espacio natural como soporte de la obra.Muchas de estas obras tienen proporciones monumentales.Se realizan y ubican en sitios remotos, lejos de la mirada
del espectador: en la ribera de un lago, en un escarpado paisaje rocoso, en una isla, en un campo abierto al pie de las montañas, en el bosque.
Es efímero, no sobrevive el paso del tiempo, pues desaparece debido a la erosión del terreno, la lluvia, las mareas o porque el propio artista desarma su obra una vez cumplido su propósito.

Caracterización
Tiene relación con la desmaterialización del objeto.Niega el papel preponderante de los museos y galerías
desviando la práctica del arte a lugares inéditos hasta su aparición.
La obra es conocida por el público a través de registros fotográficos y fílmicos, mapas o dibujos que se exponen en museos y galerías, o se venden a coleccionistas privados.
Esto provoca que el Land art permanezca dependiente del museo o galería para darse a conocer, a pesar de la decisión del artista de rechazar los espacios institucionales, cerrados o privados.

El Land art se inspira en la arquitectura antigua o los sitios sagrados del pasado más remoto, como son los monolitos o cuadrantes solares prehistóricos del tipo de Stonehenge, tumbas egipcias, montículos funerarios precolombinos, altares o marcas rituales a cielo abierto.

Los artistas del Land art corrigen, cavan zanjas, cimas o surcos; hacen grandes movimientos de tierras usando excavadoras o camiones oruga.
