Lucas 24:35 - 4835 Cuando los dos discípulos regresaron de Emaús y llegaron al sitio donde estaban reunidos los apóstoles, les contaron lo que les había pasado en el camino y como habían reconocido a Jesús al partir el pan.36 Mientras hablaban de esas cosas, se presento Jesús en medio de ellos y les dijo: “La paz este con ustedes”.

37 Ellos, desconcertados y llenos de temor, creían ver un fantasma.

38 Pero él les dijo: “No teman; soy yo. ¿Por que se espantan? ¿Por que surgen dudas en su interior? 39 Miren mis manos y mis pies. Soy yo en persona. Tóquenme y convénzanse: un fantasma no tiene ni carne ni huesos, como ven que tengo yo”. 40 Y les mostró las manos y los pies.41 Pero como ellos no acababan de creer de pura alegría y seguían atónitos, les dijo: “¿Tienen aquí algo de comer?”

42 Le ofrecieron un trozo de pescado asado;

43 él lo tomo y se puso a comer delante de ellos.44 Después les dijo: “Lo que ha sucedido es aquello de que les hablaba yo, cuando aun estaba con ustedes: que tenia que cumplirse todo lo que estaba escrito de mí en La ley de Moisés, en los profetas y en los salmos”.

45 Entonces les abrió el entendimiento para que comprendieran las Escrituras46 y les dijo: “Está escrito que el Mesías tenia que padecer y había de resucitar de entre los muertos al tercer día,

47 y que en su nombre se había de predicar a todas las naciones, comenzando por Jerusalén, la necesidad de volverse a Dios para el perdón de los pecados. 48 Ustedes son testigos de esto”.

Luke 24:35 - 4835 The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way to Emmaus and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.36 While they were still speaking about this, Jesus stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.”37 But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost.

38 Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? 39 Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” 40 And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.41 While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?”42 They gave him a piece of baked fish;

43 he took it and ate it in front of them. 44 He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.”

45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures.46 And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day

47 and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

48 You are witnesses of these things”.

Today’s Gospel, the Good News of Jesus Christ, tells us that from now on the risen Christ was to be recognized in the “breaking of the bread.” This was referring to the Eucharist, instituted by Christ at the Last Supper. Jesus, the living bread come down from heaven, was to be with us forever at Mass in a special way, and in the Holy Spirit all the time. No one can take him away from us! Glory to God! Alleluia!

El evangelio de hoy, las Buenas Nuevas de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, nos dice que de hoy en adelante, Cristo se ha de reconocer al “quebrar el pan”. Esto se refiere a la Eucaristía, la Misa. Fue instituida por Cristo en la Ultima Cena. Jesús, el pan vivo bajado del cielo, estará para siempre presente en la Misa de una manera especial, y en el Espirito Santo todo el tiempo. ¡Nadie nos lo puede quitar! ¡Gloria a Dios! ¡Aleluya!

Also, it is in speaking to one another about Jesus that the Holy Spirit is said to “break bread”. He opens up the minds of the Apostles and earliest Christians to understand the scriptures, and to understand Jesus. St. Jerome said the “ignorance of the scriptures is ignorance of Christ.” That is why it so good to have bible study classes.

También hay que notar que es en el hablar de Jesús que el Espirito Santo también se puede decir que “quiebra el pan” de la sagrada escritura. Abre la mente de los Apóstoles y los primeros Cristianos para poder comprender las escrituras, y poder comprender a Jesús. San Jerónimo dice que “ignorancia de las escrituras es ignorancia de Cristo.” Por eso es bueno tener estudios bíblicos.

What the Apostles spoke about has been recorded in the New Testament, so that we are an “apostolic church.” This is important because only they knew the mind of Christ, having lived with him for three years of his public life. St Paul comes later and says: “Put on the mind of Christ” (Philippians 2:5).

Lo que los Apóstoles dijeron es lo que leemos en el Nuevo Testamento. Por eso se dice que somos una iglesia “apostólica.” Es importante porque solo ellos conocieron la mente de Cristo de una manera intima, siendo que vivieron con Él por tres años de su vida publica. San Pablo viene después. Dice: “Pónganse la mente de Cristo” (Filipenses 2:5).

That is a key to open the doors of our minds to understanding Jesus. To speak about Jesus with love and faith is a trigger that brings so much joy! It sets off the multiplication of beautiful ideas, and thoughts, and memories. Mysteriously, from being dead, we can be alive.

Esta es la llave para abrir la puerta de nuestro entendimiento de Cristo Jesús. ¡Hablar de Jesús con amor y fe es el gatillo que trae tanto gozo! Se multiplican tantas bellas reflexiones, pensamientos, y memorias. Misteriosamente, se dice que sin Él, estamos muertos, pero ¡con Él vivimos!

By virtue of the resurrection, Jesus is accessible to us. He transcends time and space. That is the “power of the resurrection” (Philippians 3:10). This is what St. Paul sought. He longed for us to share the same Jesus Christ that he had met when his mind was opened.

Por virtud de la resurrección tenemos acceso a Jesús. Él trasciende el tiempo y el espacio. Este es el “poder de la resurrección” que buscaba San Pablo (Filipenses 3:10). Él quería compartir el mismo Cristo que Él había conocido cuando su mente se le abrio.

“Peace be with you! ” Jesus said. And he showed them the marks on his hands and feet and side. It is so important that I never forget the price Jesus paid for our salvation. We begin every Mass with this words of Jesus. And we wish every believing Christian the same peace and love right before Communion, right after the Our Father.

¡La Paz este con ustedes! Dice Jesús. Y les mostró sus llagas en sus manos y en sus pies. Es importante que nunca se me olvide el precio que Jesús pago por nuestra salvación. Por eso es que cada Misa se comienza con estas palabras de Jesús. Y le deseamos a todo Cristiano creyente la misma paz y el amor inmediatamente antes de comulgar, después del Padre Nuestro.

Peace in Hebrew is “shalom”. It means tranquility of order, integrity, wholeness, togetherness, healing. All of these Jesus brings when we commune with Him. And Jesus reassures the Apostles: “Why are you troubled?” “Why do questions arise in your hearts?” He says the same to us so many times. Anytime we go through troubled times, or anxiety, it is good to remember the words of Jesus. Peace!

Paz en hebreo es "shalom". Significa tranquilidad de orden, integridad, unidad, curación. Todo esto Jesús nos trae cuando estamos unidos a Él. Jesús asegura a los Apóstoles diciendo “¿Por qué se turban? ¿Por qué tienen en sus corazones esos pensamientos?” Así nos dice a todos, muchas veces. Cualquier vez que estamos pasando tiempos molestos, o ansiosos, allí esta Él. Y nos dice lo mismo: ¡Paz!

Jesus wants us to focus on his hands and heart and feet, and less on ourselves. “By his stripes we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). “Touch Me,” he says. What a tremendous gift to be aware of the love of the Lord and never forget how much he has done for me. How beautiful it is to feel his love, with reverence. How marvelous it is to feel the power of his resurrection!

Jesús quiere que nos enfoquemos en sus manos y en sus pies, y menos en nosotros. “¡Por sus llagas, somos sanados!” (Isaías 53:5). “¡Toquenme y vean!” dice el Señor. ¡Que tremendo don eso de conocer el amor del Señor y jamás olvidar cuanto ha hecho por mí! ¡Que bonito sentir su amor, con reverencia. Que maravilla sentir el poder de Cristo resucitado.

They recognize Jesus at the “breaking of the bread.” (Luke 24:30). This term is also cited in Acts 2:42; Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 10:16, and Luke 9:16.

It seems that the disciples on the Road to Emmaus were disappointed. They seem to be convinced that miracles like rising from the dead couldn’t happen. They were expecting a nationalistic messiah. Jesus dispels their disillusionment by citing the scriptures. No particular texts are cited. Let me offer a few that I have found. Here they are.

Parece que los discípulos en el camino a Emaús estaban desanimados, y convencidos que milagros como levantarse de la muerte no pueden ocurrir. Estaban esperando a un Mesías nacionalista. Jesús remueve su desilusión citando las escrituras. No se mencionan cuales, pero yo propongo algunas que he encontrado. Aquí están.

Zechariah 13:7 says “Strike the shepherd, that the sheep may be scattered; I will turn my hand against the little ones.” (That is what Satan did at the Passion of Jesus).

Lamentations 3:30 says: Let him give his cheek to the smiter, and be filled with insults.

Psalm 22:7-9 says: “But I am a worm, not a man, scorned by men, despised by the people. ” “All who see me mock me; they curl their lips and jeer; they shake their heads at me.” “He relied on the LORD—let him deliver him; if he loves him, let him rescue him.”

Salmo 22:7-9 dice: “Pero yo soy un gusano, no un hombre, vergüenza de la gente, desprecio del pueblo; al verme se burlan de mí, hacen visajes, menean la cabeza; “Acudió al Señor, que lo ponga a salvo, que lo libre si tanto lo quiere.”

Psalm 22:14-19 says: “They open their mouths against me, lions that rend and roar. Like water my life drains away; all my bones are disjointed. My heart has become like wax, it melts away within me. As dry as a potsherd is my throat; my tongue cleaves to my palate; you lay me in the dust of death. Dogs surround me; a pack of evildoers closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and my feet - I can count all my bones. They stare at me and gloat, they divide my garments among them; for my clothing they cast lots.”

Salmo 22: 14-19 dice: “Estoy como agua derramada, tengo los huesos descoyuntados, mi corazón, como cera, se derrite en mis entrañas; Mi garganta está seca como una teja, la lengua se me pega al paladar; me aprietas contra el polvo de la muerte. Me acorrala una jauría de mastines, me cerca una banda de malhechores, me taladran las manos y los pies, y puedo contar mis huesos. Ellos me miran triunfantes, se reparten mi ropa, se sortean mi túnica.”

Isaiah 53:12 says: “…because he poured out his soul to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sins of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

Isaías 53:12 dice: “...cuando derramó su vida hasta la muerte, y fue contado con los pecadores; habiendo él llevado el pecado de muchos, y orado por los transgresores.”

Zechariah 12:10 says: “…so that when they look on him whom they have thrust through, they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and they will grieve for him as one grieves over a firstborn.”

Zacarías 12:10 dice: “…de modo que cuando ven a él a quien han traspasado, van a llorar por él como quien lamenta por un hijo único, y llorarán por él como quien se aflige sobre un primogénito.”

In conclusion we can see that this is a very rich passage. I have added the texts from the scriptures about the Messiah that were fulfilled in Jesus. I hope this helps you appreciate better the story fo the two disciples who saw Jesus on the road the Emmaus. Jesus Christ the Lord is risen, alleluia!
