Outreach Corner :

Back to School Backpack Program If you are in need of backpacks for your children please stop by the Outreach Office Monday thru Friday from 10:00 am to 11:45 am or call 408-378-8086 to set up an appoint-ment to sign up for our backpack program. You will need to bring in an identification document for each child and we will be asking for the age of each child so that they can receive an age appropriate backpack.

If you wish to help with the packing or distributing of the backpacks you may call 408-378-8086 and leave your name and phone number. We will call you back to let you know when we will need your help. Teenagers are wel-come and can earn service hours for helping.

Third Sunday Food Collection - Weekend of July 20-21 Please help the Society of St. Vincent de Paul with food for the hungry who come to our Outreach Office. Items needed: peanut butter, jelly, non-sugary cereal, pasta sauce, tuna fish, 1 lb bags of spaghetti, beans and rice, and hearty soups. We distribute over 50 bags of food per month to those in need. You may also bring food to the Outreach Office Monday thru Friday from 10 to noon any-time during the month.

Dear Fr. Kevin and St. Lucy Parish,

Andrew is doing very well. I recently spoke to his doctor and she said he's doing almost perfect at the moment. He had blood work done today and his counts are high and all looks well. He began the maintenance phase of treatment on April 22nd and that will continue for 3 years. He was able to return to school on May 1st. He's attending summer school at St. Lawrence and also gets tutoring several times a week. We truly appreciate all the prayers and know that they do make a high difference. We thank God every day for all that has been done for us and for people like you who care about us and keep us in their prayers. Thank you and God bless you.

Andrew Brown is very elated to be St. Lucy's new Director of Faith Formation! Andrew & his wife, Mary Beth, have been married since July 2010. He was actually baptized at St. Lucy's Parish in 1983. He lived in San Jose his whole life until moving to Los Angeles in September of 2011. Andrew first felt the call to work in youth ministry when he began volunteering in 2003 at Holy Family Parish. His “Church career” began as a sophomore in high school as the “weekend bulletin stuffer” which evolved into working Director of Youth Ministry at Holy Family. An-drew recently worked in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles at Holy Trinity Parish in San Pedro. He has served on (Arch)Diocesan committees and Retreat teams (Sacramento, San Jose, & Monterrey) as well as led over 30+ Re-treats for Catholic Jr. High Students, High School youth, and their Core Teams. He has written Life Nights, Blogs, and Liturgy Guides through serving as a Life Teen Area Contact since 2007 and has given over 30+ talks at vari-ous workshops, Core Trainings, & Conventions. This Bellarmine graduate continued his Jesuit education by earn-ing a Bachelor’s degree from the University of San Francisco in Organizational Behavior & Leadership. Welcome Andrew! his first day with the parish will be July 15th! As Mary Beth & Andrew transition back to the San Jose they ask if any parishioners would like to lease property to them they'd be very interested. Irma Guadalupe Alarcon de Rangel is delighted to be Director of Faith Formation at St. Lucy Parish and having the opportunity to share her faith and experience with our vibrant community. Irma was born in Tampico, Tamauli-pas, Mexico. She came to California with her husband David where they have been blessed with four children and two grandchildren. Irma worked as Pastoral Ministry Associate and Catechetical Director at St. Patrick Parish from 1994 to 2000, as Hispanic Ministry Director at St. John Vianney Parish from 2001 to 2005, and as Director of Reli-gious Education at Christ The King Parish from 2005 to June 2013. Irma was the Hispanic Catechetical Ministry Associate for the Office of Pastoral Ministry in the Diocese of San Jose from 1998 to 1999. She has also taught sessions in Catechesis at the Institute for Leadership in Ministry since 2001. Irma got an Electrical Engineering Degree in Mexico, and when her children were growing, she studied her Master Degree in the same field at San Jose State University where later she worked for 12 ½ years. Irma also has a Master Degree in Catechesis from Santa Clara University. Irma’s first day with St. Lucy’s will be July 15th.

Classics Bingo Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to join the Classics as we play Bingo on July 19, 2013. Bingo will start at 7:30 pm in the Parish Activities Center. We will play 10 games. Bingo cards are $5 each, or 2 for $9. For every 2 cards you purchase you receive a free raffle ticket. Bring an appetizer or dessert to share. We have a raffle for door prizes about 8:30 pm. If you have prizes to donate contact Robin for Peter at 408-364-2015.

ATENCIÓN ADULTOS Y JÓVENES: Nues-tros jóvenes necesitan modelos positivos en nuestros programas y los adolescentes son un placer. Life Teen (nuestro programa juve-nil) se junta todos los domingos por la noche y las clases de confirmación segundo año los martes a partir de finales de septiembre. Demos la bienvenida a Irma Guadalupe Alarcón de Rangel y Andrew Brown

Andrew Brown está muy entusiasmado de servir como Director de Formación de St. Lucy. Andrew y su esposa, Mary Beth, se casaron en julio de 2010. Él fue bautizado en la Parroquia de St. Lucy en 1983. Vivió en San José toda su vida hasta que se mudó a Los Ángeles en septiembre de 2011. Andrew sintió por primera vez el llamado para trabajar en pastoral juvenil, cuando fue voluntario en la Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia en 2003. Su "carrera en la Iglesia" comenzó cuando era estudiante de high school en donde fue voluntario en los fines de se-mana y luego esto se convirtió un trabajo como director de la Pastoral Juvenil la Parroquia de la Sagrada Familia. Andrew trabajó recientemente en la Arquidiócesis de Los Angeles en la Parroquia de la Santa Trinidad de San Pedro. Ha formado parte de comités diocesanos y de retiros (Sacramento, San José, y Monterrey), así como orga-nizado más de 30 Retiros para estudiantes High School, los jóvenes de secundaria, y sus equipos de lideres. Ha escrito Life Nights, blogs, y Guías de Liturgia a través de su servicio como coordinador de Life Teen desde 2007 y ha dado más de 30 presentaciones en varios talleres, entrenamientos básicos, y convenciones. Se gradúo de Be-llarmine High School y continuó su educación jesuita con un título de licenciatura de la Universidad de San Fran-cisco. Bienvenido Andrew!. Irma Guadalupe Alarcón de Rangel está encantada de servir como Directora de Formación en la Parroquia de Santa Lucia y tener la oportunidad de compartir su fe y su experiencia con nuestra comunidad. Irma nació en Tampico, Tamaulipas, México. Con su esposo David se mudaron a California y fueron bendecidos con cuatro hijos y dos nietos. Irma trabajó como Asociada Pastoral y Directora de Catequesis en St. Patrick Parish desde 1994 a 2000, como Directora del Ministerio Hispano en el St. John Vianney 2001 a 2005, y como Directora de Educación Religiosa en la Parroquia de Cristo Rey de 2005 a junio 2013 . Irma fue la Asociada Pastoral de Catequesis Hispa-na en la Oficina de Ministerio Pastoral en la Diócesis de San José desde 1998 a 1999. También ha impartido se-siones de catequesis en el Instituto de Liderazgo Ministerial desde el año 2001. Irma obtuvo una licenciatura en ingeniería eléctrica en México, y cuando sus hijos estaban creciendo, ella estudió su Maestría en la misma materia en la Universidad Estatal de San José, y luego trabajó en ingeniería durante 12 años y medio. Irma también tiene una Maestría en Catequesis de la Universidad de Santa Clara. Bienvenida Irma! Su primer será 15 de julio.

Querido Padre Kevin y los Parroquianos de Santa Lucia,

La salud de Andrew está muy bien. Hace poco hablé con el médico y me dijo que está casi perfecto. Realizo análisis de sangre ahora y todo se ve bien. Comenzó la fase de mantenimiento del tratamiento el 22 de abril y continuará durante 3 años. Fue capaz de regresar a la escuela el 1 de mayo. Asiste a la escuela de verano en St. Lawrence. Apreciamos sinceramente todas las oraciones y sabemos que hacen una gran diferencia. Damos gracias a Dios to-dos los días por todo lo que han hecho por nosotros y para la gente como usted que se preocupan por nosotros. Gra-cias y que Dios los bendiga.

LEADERSHIP NIGHT June 27, 2013 – Parish Activity Center

Each month, St. Lucy’s five leadership commissions – Worship, Community, Formation, Outreach and Ad-ministration – meet for a “Leadership Night” to pray, plan and serve the St. Lucy community.

COMMISSION UPDATES ADMINISTRATION COMMISSION:

- New Security Upgrades Coming: These include new fencing, improved parking lot lighting, improved security for the school entrance, and integrated school/parish communications system.

- Tech Committee Forming: To advise the parish on selection and integrate of tech tools.

- St. Lucy “Happy-Meter”: The Stewardship Committee is preparing a parish survey. Stay tuned! COMMUNITY LIFE COMMISSION:

- Ministry Mingle – Saturday, October 19th: Come explore your calling at this exposition of the many ministries of our parish.

- Sept. 14th Parish Picnic shaping up to be a bash! Over 80 volunteers are helping plan our first (annual!) picnic, to be held at John D. Morgan Park. Mark your calendar!

- Database upgrades: To be sure that we are addressing the needs of all our parishioners, we’re working to implement new software to track ministry engagement.

FORMATION COMMITTEE:

- Family-Centered Faith Formation Update: Brainstorming plans for implementing “Strong Catholic Families” is going strong. Ideas include a family movie night, a family day of service, and providing fami-lies faith tools they can use at home.

OUTREACH COMMISSION:

- $5,000 for St. Vincent de Paul! Our SVP team has received this grant from the Catholic Community Foundation to help provide emergency rent support and a school backpack program.

- Refugee Support Ministry: Our Social Justice Ministry is running a tutoring program for our sponsored refugee family through the end of the summer, and then will transition into a new project.

- Prayer Chain: Is now up and running, at 23 members strong! No meetings required – just a commit-ment to pray. Check the bulletin for how to get involved!

WORSHIP COMMISSION:

- Youth mass best practices: To explore ways of engaging our youth, commission members will be fan-ning out in the next few weeks to see what other parishes do to make youth liturgy come alive.

- Formation retreat for liturgical ministers – Sept. 28: This is an opportunity for ministers to reflect on the meaning of their ministry, and the part it plays in their faith lives and the life of the Church.

- Portiucula Indulgence in the Spirit of St. Francis – Aug. 2: The Pope has authorized this practice, which involves attending mass on Aug. 2 and going to Confession within a week thereof.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: KEY POINTS OF DISCUSSION

- FY 2013-14 parish budget approved: $1.38M annual budget projects a small surplus, and includes safety and security capital projects and computer hardware/software investments.

- Leadership Training: A $1,500 grant and a deep discount from a professional trainer will permit us to offer training to a set of parish leaders – something that has been in demand for some time.

- Parish Council Retreat: This year’s retreat will be August 16-17.
