Una joven franco-kurda conoce a un periodista que lucha por los derechos de las mujeres y a dos estudiantes de Cine de la NYU, guiados por una estrella de la televisión kurda en su periplo por proyectar películas de Charlie Chaplin en al-deas remotas. Esta unión les conduce, en última instancia, a la búsqueda de la aldea de su madre, destruida durante el Genocidio Anfal.

A young French-Kurdish woman meets two NYU Film students, guided by a Kurdish TV celebrity as they screen Charlie Chaplin fi lms in remote villages, and a Kurdish journalist fi ghting for women’s rights, ultimately bringing them together on a quest to fi nd her mother’s village, destroyed during the Anfal Genocide.

BIOGRAFÍACineasta autodidacta nacido en el Kurdistán iraquí, emigró a los Estados Unidos como refugiado en 1976 y realizó su debut cinematográfi co en 1995 con Dance of the Pendulum. En 2002 volvió al Kurdistán, donde realizó Jiyan, película premiada que retrata la vida en Halabja tras los ataques con armas químicas. Chaplin of the Mountains, su último trabajo rodado con actores americanos, europeos y kurdos, está actualmente en postproducción.

BIOGRAPHYSelf-taught Kurdish fi lmmaker, born in 1961 in Kurdistan-Iraq. He moved to United States as a refugee in 1976 and made his feature fi lm debut with Dance of the Pendulum in 1995. He returned to Kurdistan in 2002 and made Jiyan, an award-winning fi lm that depicts life after the chemical attack on the town of Halabja. Rosebiani’s latest fi lm Chaplin of the Mountains, shot with a cast of American, European and Kurdish actors, is now in post-production.

En una habitación de 6 metros cuadrados, nos encontramos con 32 niños enloquecidos por el fútbol con los ojos pegados al televisor. La mitad de ellos anima al Real Madrid, la otra mitad al Barcelona.

Viven, duermen, comen y estudian en la misma habitación de un orfanato situado en el distrito más peligroso de Al Sadr City, en Baghdad.

La escuela y las luchas entre los americanos y las milicias, junto con la amenaza de perder su hogar, son parte del día a día de los huérfanos en Irak.

In a 6x6 sqm room we meet 32 football crazed children with their eyes glued to the TV. Half of them cheer Real Madrid, the other half Barce-lona.

They live, sleep, eat and study in the same room of an orphanage set in the most dangerous district of Al Sadr City, in Baghdad.

School and fi ghts between the Americans and Militias, coupled with the threat that they will loose their home, is all just part of what it means to be an orphan in Iraq.

BIOGRAFÍA - Nació en Baghdad en 1964 y se graduó en el Departamento de Cine de la Academia de Bellas Artes. Atia fundó Iraq Al-Rafi dain, la primera empresa productora iraquí, y se ha consolidado como unos de los más prominentes productores de largometrajes y documentales de Oriente Medio.

BIOGRAPHY - Born in Baghdad in 1964 and graduated from the Final Art Academy Film Department in 1993, Atia is founder of Iraq Al-Rafi dain, Iraq’s premier fi lm production company. He has established himself as one of the middle-East’s most prominent feature fi lm and documentary producers.

BIOGRAFÍA - Co-fundador de la productora Human Film y discípulo de Sundance, Mohamed estudió Producción de Cine y TV en la Media Academy de Hilversem y dos Máster en Cinematografía y en Dirección en la Northern Film School de Leeds. Tras la caída del régimen de Saddam en 2003, Mohamed volvió a Iraq para rodar Ahlaam, su primer largometraje, y en 2008 para rodar Son of Babylon.

BIOGRAPHY - Co-founder of the feature fi lm production company Human Film and Sundance fellow, Mohamed studied Film and Television Production at the Media Aca-demy in Hilversem, and completed two Master degrees in Cinematography and Directing at the Northern Film School in Leeds. Following the collapse of Saddam’s regime in 2003, Mohamed returned to Iraq to make his fi rst feature fi lm, Ahlaam and in 2008 to shoot Son of Babylon.

BIOGRAFÍALeïla Kilani, nacida en Casablanca en 1970, vive entre Paris y Tánger. Tiene un Máster en Historia Musulmana y Civilizaciones en la Región del Mediterráneo y está preparando su tesis en la Escuela Francesa de Estudios Avanzados en Ciencias Sociales (EHESS). Periodista freelance desde 1997, escribe para Qantara, revista publicada por el Instituto del Mundo Árabe sobre culturas árabes y mediterráneas. Comenzó a rodar documentales en 2000.

BIOGRAPHYBorn in Casablanca in 1970, Leïla Kilani lives between Paris and Tangier. She has a post-graduate degree in Muslim History and Civilization in the Mediterranean Region and is currently preparing her doctoral thesis at the French School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS). A freelance journalist since 1997, she writes for Qantara, the magazine published by the Arab World Institute on Arab and Mediterranean cultures. She began making documentaries in 2000.

En Tanger, Badia e Imane, dos jóvenes veintea-ñeras marroquíes, caminan en línea en medio de un ejército de trabajadores que inundan la ciudad con su ir y venir de un lado a otro. Las dos trabajan en una empresa de envasado de gambas, un trabajo humillante y difícil, en el cual el olor de las gambas penetra en los poros de la piel.

In Tangier, Badia and Imane, two young Moroc-can girls of around twenty, walk in line amongst an army of workers who fi ll up the city with their coming and going back and forth. They both work in a shrimp-packaging factory, a diffi cult and humiliating job, where the strong odor of shrimp seeps into the pores of their skin.

Badia’s hands are busy but her head is idle; she perfumes herself with lies to wash away the shrimp smell and pretends to be someone else. Badia can fl ap her wings as much as she likes. She’ll never fl y.

MAHMOUD AL MASSADBIOGRAFÍAMahmoud al Massad nació en Jordania, donde estudió Arte y Cine en la Universidad de Yarmouk. Emigró a Euro-pa y trabajó en la industria cinematográfi ca en Rumania, Italia y Alemania, realizando un total de 12 cortometrajes. Su documental Recycle (2007) se proyectó en varios festivales internacionales, resultando ganador del World Cinema Cinematography Award en Sundance y de la tercera edición de Cine en Movimiento en el Festival de San Sebastián.

BIOGRAPHYMahmoud al Massad was born in Jordan. He studied Art and Film at the University of Yarmouk in Jordan. He moved to Europe where he worked in the fi lm industry in Romania, Italy and Germany, making 12 short fi lms. His documentary Recycle (2007) was shown at many fi lm festivals around the world and won the World Cinema Cinematography Award at the Sundance Film Festival and Cinema in Motion Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
