CLAUDIA CASANOVA

HISTORIA DE UNA FLOR / THE STORY OF A FLOWER

Based on the life of Blanca Catalán de Ocón, the first Spanish botanist, this is a touching love story of ayoung daughter of aristocratic family in Teruel, and Heinrich Moritz Willkomm, a well-known Germanbotanist, with the discovery of a new species of a flower in the 19th century Spain in the background.

It is the year 1879, Valle de Valcabriel, Teruel. Alba’s mother, Mercedes looks at the rugged mountains inAragón and recollects her native Girona and also her boarding school in Switzerland. A long time haspassed since she left Girona to marry Eduardo with whom she had two daughters. Both girls, Alba andLuisa, love nature and after long winters in Barcelona in their mother’s house they only dream of goingback to Teruel. Once there, Alba will spend hours wandering across the valley, delighted to add to hercollection of flowers and dreamy Luisa will write poems and chase butterflies. Mercedes firmly believes infreedom and education for women and, at her request, canon Bernardo Zapater will encourage the twogirls to follow their scientific interests. One day Heinrich Moritz Willkomm, a German botanist arrives in thetown. He is working on a book which will revolutionize botany and has been cataloguing flowers andspecies for years. Little by little Alba finds a soulmate in him and Willkomm falls head over heels in lovewith the resolute and intelligent Spanish girl but he is a married man and his world is Germany. In spite ofthe intense mutual attraction, they both know that they can only be bound together by the recollection ofone summer in Valcabriel. Alba, like the sweet-smelling flower they discovered together, decides to live thedaily life of changing seasons: there will come the winter of her melancholy, the fragrant and short spring, the summer, dry and cruel and the autumn, the prelude to the snow. But with the death of her mother andthe family’s financial ruin she must give up botany, her passion and get married as befits young girls of hertimes. On the day of her wedding, a letter and a locket arrive from Germany.

“An oasis of peace. Historia de una flor is so beautiful in its harmonious whole. It is a wonder how it is written. Withthe simplicity so similar to some flowers which do not need big leaves and bright colours to captivate you by theirbeauty and become your favourite. You are transported through its pages not even being aware of it, like lightning.Do not miss this marvel.”De lector a lector

“A novel which rescues from oblivion the figure of the Spanish botanist, Blanca Catalán de Ocón.”Librújula

PIONIERAS/ PIONEERS

A family saga of the Spanish emigrants in the heart of wild land where the law is written with blood.

Inspired by the migrations of her own ancestors, the author gives us a passionate saga of vengeance andambition in the Wild West, which since the mid-19th century until the beginnings of the 20th becomesdeeply rooted in the life of the Spanish immigrants and shapes the condition of being a woman in the mostrough and turbulent times and places where the law is written with blood. In the middle of the19th century, the Ferrer family emigrates to New Mexico in search of a better life. They settle in the LlanoEstacado, a frontier zone inhabited by the Spanish, Irish and Swedish immigrants, who like themselveshave crossed the ocean. María Ferrer begins working as a teacher in the school to help her parents getahead but her life changes dramatically when one night, bandits break into their house, kill her mother, brother and father and capture her sister Elena. Homeless and alone, with nobody to turn to for help, shewill set out on her quest to find her sister and the murderers of her family. Armed with courage and hope,María assumes a new identity: she learns to dress, behave and talk like a man and joins a group of trackerswho dedicate their time and effort rescuing captives from the hands of the Indian tribes. Dressed in man’sclothes, she will have to put up with the elements, to fight and kill and to infiltrate the man’s world neverrevealing who she really is.

With the settings of the Costa Brava, the arid land of New Mexico or the spectacular Rocky Mountains, writing in the detail-oriented, evocative and absorbing prose, the author takes the reader into the verybowels of a hostile territory and sheds a new light on the unknown part of the Spanish history. An important book for current times, coinciding with the rise of the feminist movements. The story of awoman who, finding herself in the world dominated by men decides to pass for one of them, bury her pastand disguise any feminine trait in order to survive.A story of vengeance, love and passion and a mystery that captures the readers’ attention from the veryfirst page.

ILDEFONSO FALCONES

EL PINTOR DE ALMAS / THE PAINTER OF THE SOULS

At the dawn of the 20th century, Barcelona was beginning to change. While the modernism adorned its more affluent streets, the workers in poorer districts were fighting for their rights and for a more equitable society.

Dalmau Sala, a young painter, will find himself entangled between his passion for the art and his love for a beautiful and vivacious woman in this brilliant novel which recreates masterfully the exciting times, distinguished by social tension and anti-clericalism in a city capable of rebelling against the power of tradition.Barcelona, 1901. The city is living the days of great social unrest. The abject misery of the most disadvantaged contrasts with the elegant opulence of big avenues where there have already appeared remarkable buildings, the symbol of the arrival of modernism.Dalmau Sala, the son of an executed anarchist, lives between two worlds. On the one hand, his family and Emma, the woman he loves, are staunch defenders of the workers’ fight. On the other, being employed in the pottery workshop of don Manuel Bello, his mentor and a conservative middle-class defender of the catholic faith, he finds himself in the environment where the affluence and artistic innovations prevail.Tempted by the attractive offers of the middle classes willing to buy his paintings and his conscience, Dalmau will have to find his true path as a man and an artist, to get away from the nights of wine and drugs in order to recognize what is really important for him: his values, his soul, the love of a brave, combative woman and, above all, those paintings which spring up from his imagination and capture on a canvas the miserable souls moving aimlessly along the streets of a city inflamed by the germ of a rebellion.

In The Painter of the Souls, Ildefonso Falcones gives us a dramatic history of turbulent times along with a moving scenario in which love, passion for the art, fighting for the ideals and vengeance blend masterfully together to recreate a Barcelona, once dull and grey, now on its way towards a brilliant future, where colour and hope begin to flourish in its homes and streets.

EL BOSQUE SABE TU NOMBRE / THE FOREST KNOWS YOUR NAME

A surprising debut, a different novel, magical, realistic, feminist, picaresque. For a long time there has notemerged a literary debut as refreshing as this first novel by Alaitz Leceaga. Their relationship, however, is tainted with malice, rivalry, jealousy and dangerous power games and it deteriorates when the girls reach adolescence. After atragic incident and on the eve of the Civil War, Estrella abandons the family mansion and sets on a long tripthat will take her from a boarding school in England to the dry lands of California and the glamour of LosAngeles and on her return trip she will have a taste of lavish parties in the Madrid of a new regime. SUSANA MARTÍN-GIJÓN

PROGENIE / PROGENY

A bold novel that gives no breathing space to the reader while delving into one of the major themes of our times: a reflection on motherhood, and with it, on family models and on still existing social demands imposed on women. A captivating thriller and a powerful way of telling a story that is much more than just the plot and the characters, but also the issue of artificial fertilization and genetic manipulation. Susana Martín Gijón offers a spectacular coup de theatre in the novel that will leave no-one indifferent.

Seville, in the grip of a heat wave. Whoever can, dashes for the beach. But not Camino Vargas, the unexpectedly-appointed and temporary head of the homicide group since the shooting that left inspector Arenas in a coma. And neither do the criminals. Someone has deliberately run over a woman and fled. This fact will become the focus of media attention when a disturbing piece of information is leaked out: the murderer left a pacifier in the mouth of the victim before escaping. All the clues point to the ex-partner, a psychological abuser who made her life impossible. The statistics are not good: there have already been fifty fatal attacks of gender-based violence this year. However, when the autopsy reveals that the victim was pregnant, things will no longer be so clear. And when other murders begin to happen following the same modus operandi, the entire city will be shaken to the core. This hard and rather awkward inspector will have to handle the toughest case of her career, helped by the few members of her team that remain in the city. In an exercise of literary maturity, the author reaches a perfect balance between the subject and a gripping and absorbing thriller what with the big unknown that generates high tension in the whole city: has Seville become a dangerous place for women? Who and why is committing such brutal murders?

LA NOVIA GITANA / THE GYPSY BRIDE

Inspector Elena Blanco has to raise every fold of the Gypsy Bride’s veil to get to the truth: who hatedSusana so much, who hated her sister and her father? While working on the case she will have to dealwith a dangerous murderer, a vengeance, the age-old religion and the revelation of some terrible factsabout herself.

“In Madrid there are not many murders committed”, deputy inspector Ángel Zárate’s old mentor in thepolice force used to say, “but when they happen, there is nothing the other cities can be envious of”,would add inspector Elena Blanco, the Head of the Analysis Brigade, a police department created forresolving the most complicated and most heinous crimes. Susana Macaya, a Gypsy girl, educated in a non-gypsy environment, disappears after her hen party. Nothing is known about her until two days later whenher body turns up in the run-down Quinta de Vista Alegre park with its abandoned gardens in the district ofCarabanchel. It might have been just another routine investigation, were it not for the fact that the victimwas brutally tortured and that her sister Lara, also about to be married, also a young and beautiful Gypsygirl was murdered in the same manner seven years before. Lara’s killer is serving a sentence in prison, sothere are only two possibilities: it is either a copycat murder or an innocent person has been imprisoned. This is why the Head of Operations, inspector Rentero decides to take the case from young Zárate and giveit to the experienced Elena Blanco. She is a peculiar character, a loner, a fan of grappa, of karaoke, of oldSoviet cars and of romantic encounters in underground parking bays. A very special police officer whokeeps working in the force because she must not forget that there is a case in her life she cannot close. Toinvestigate implies getting to know people, revealing their secrets, their lack of consistency, their life. Inthe case of Lara and Susana it will be necessary to delve into the life of the Gypsies who have renouncedtheir customs in order to integrate into the society as well as into the life of those who condemn suchattitudes and do not forgive. It will also require acknowledging petty displays of racism they face everyday…

LA RED PÚRPURA / THE PURPLE WEB

The fight to finish off The Purple Web will push the Case Analysis Brigade to the limit and, in a way, it mayeven destroy the Brigade itself. A race during which Ángel Zárate will see Elena Blanco slowly breakingdown, tormented because her son can be part of that horror. But what would not a mother do to save herchild?

A small townhouse in a residential neighborhood on the outskirts of Madrid. The last days of a hotsummer. Alberto Robles has to order his daughter to get out of the pool while his wife, Soledad, is trying toget her teenage son, Daniel, to come down from his room and help her set the table for dinner. It couldhave been a night like so many others. But tonight, everything will fall into pieces. Inspector Elena Blanco,in charge of the Case Analysis Brigade (BAC), bursts into the house of Los Robles. Convinced of what shedoes, she goes straight to Daniel's room, followed by the rest of the agents. On the computer screen ofthe teenager there is the confirmation of what they feared: the boy is watching a live snuff show in which agirl is tortured by two hooded men. The efforts of the agents to try to locate the place from which it comesare unsuccessful. Helpless, they can only witness how the torture continues until the death of the girlwhose name, in that moment, they are not even able to know. But she was not the first victim. How manyhave died at the hands of the Purple Web in similar shows? That is the conclusion reached by the Brigadeagents after investigating this sinister organization with which they came into contact for the first time inthe case of The Gypsy Bride. For months they have been collecting information about this group thattraffics in videos of extreme violence on Deep Web, the hidden side of the Net. And during all this time,Elena Blanco has not told anybody what she discovered: that her son, Lucas, who disappeared when hewas only a child, is perhaps a part of the Web. Perhaps he has become a monster. Could her son be one ofthe hooded men torturing that girl? Elena does not know if she will have the courage to face up to theanswer to this question. But, inevitably, the truth will be getting closer and closer to her. The video thatthey managed to intercept on Daniel's computer will serve the agents to gradually surround The PurpleWeb. However, the new discoveries will make them realize that this torture was only the tip of the iceberg. That the perversion of the human being is capable of reaching extremes they never imagined.

“Sangre demi sangre by Rebeca Tabales. The birth of a great novelist.”“Sangre de mi sangre is a thriller with elements of a detective story and a psychological horror. By showing the darkside of maternity, Rebeca Tabales offers the readers a very personal alternative to suspense.”En Edición Original

“In Sangre demi sangre Rebeca Tabales demonstrates her psychological knowledge and her writing skills and offers thereaders a story which is fascinating, compassionate and also rousing anger. Her prose is strong and brutal and at thesame time extremely enjoyable. The characters come to life in the heart-rending story while the still prevailing, unjustsystem of defence of the abused adds moral significance to the narrative. Undoubtedly, an engrossing psychologicalthriller with an unexpected and brilliant culmination.”Mayte Expósito , Negra y mortal

“Few years ago Rebeca Tabales’ Eres bella and brutal dazzled me. With Sangre de mi sangre I can only keep saying: followthis girl! Rebeca Tabales entered the genre twisting the cliché and doing something very personal. ”Carlos Zanón
