Esta publicación vuelve a ponerse a disposición de todos los jumillanos y de quienes nos visitan para que puedan disfrutar de nuestra Semana Santa. Recogemos aquí, con detalle, los actos y procesiones que representan nuestra tradición, religiosidad popular

que complementa la celebración litúrgica de la Pascua.

Al celebrar la Semana Santa, no sólo recordamos que Jesucristo murió por nosotros y para nuestra salvación, sino que lo hacemos presente en un espacio y un tiempo con-

creto, aquí y ahora. Invito a todos a ser actores y no espectadores, es decir a entender y comprender lo

que estamos celebrando. La motivación interior nos hará disfrutar estos días con toda intensidad.

Once again, this publication is at the disposal of all the people in Jumilla, as well as all who visit us during these days, to enjoy our Semana Santa. Acts and processions are gathered therein at detail; they represent our tradition and popular religiosity, which complement the liturgical celebration of Easter.

When we celebrate Semana Santa, we not only reminisce that Jesus Christ died for all of us and for our salvation, but we are also making Him present in a specific space and time, here and now.

I would like to invite everybody to become actors and not only specta-tors of this, that is, to realice and understand what we are celebrating. Our in-

ner motivation will make us enjoy these days with full intensity.

Leaving from Santa Ana Monastery’s Church, its atrium and cloister, then going through “Totta Pulchra” Stais, Cactus Garden, walking the path to the orchard, the paved path and finally, Holy Sepulchre Hermitage.

Procesión de antorchas con el Smo. Cristo Yacente desde su capilla de la Inmaculada en la iglesia del Monasterio de Santa Ana a su antigua morada de la Ermita del Santo Sepulcro en el huerto, donde se le rezarán cuatro estaciones hasta llegar a la ermita, que será depositado en su sepulcro, bajo una gran piedra. Podrá ser visitado durante toda la Cuaresma en recogimiento y oración hasta el día de Jueves Santo.

The image of “Stmo. Cristo Yacente” (Lying Jesus Christ), accompanied by torches, goes from his”La Inmaculada” Chapel, inside Santa Ana Monastery’s Church, to his ancient dwelling, the Holy Sepulchre Hermitage, at the orchard of the Monastery. During the itinerary, four prayers are recited at four stations, before arriving at the hermitage, where the image will be placed on his sepulchre, covered by a big stone. Visits are permitted for spiritual retreat and for praying during Lent period, up to Thursday, the Holy Week.

Los traslados de la imágenes que participarán en las Semana Santa de Jumilla, se realizan unos días antes de comenzar nuestra semana grande y consisten, principalmente en llevar la imágenes desde las parroquias donde reciben culto, durante todo el año, para depositarlas en los lugares donde las hermandades y cofradías las situarán en los tronos y las embellecerán para participar en la procesiones. En este caso se realiza desde la Parroquia Mayor de Santiago al Real Pósito.

Some days before our Semana Santa starts, images are carried out to their brotherhoods’ headquarters, so that they could participate in processions. Generally, images are carried out from the churches they have been staying, to the places where brotherhoods will beautifully prepare them for processions. In this case, they are taken from the Major Church of Santiago to the Brotherhoods’ General Headquarters (“Real Pósito”).


La Semana Santa comienza el Viernes de Dolores con el espectacular Vía Crucis, para lo cual las calles se convierten en expositores con las imágenes de la Semana Santa; altares montados con arte y sentido popular e imágenes en sus tronos, para ser contempladas de forma distinta a como se podrán ver cuando vayan en su procesión correspondiente.Our Semana Santa starts on Friday before Palm Sunday with the magnificent “Via Crucis”: streets become exhibitors for Semana Santa images, that are placed over some altarpieces created with artistic popular sense, so that they may be admired in a different way, as when they are over their thrones.

Cuatro son las imágenes que se trasladan hoy de lugar, Jesús Prendido y Cristo de la Sentencia, desde la Parroquia Mayor de Santiago, al finalizar la misa de Hermandad, hacia el Real Pósito, pero a su paso por el Arco de San Roque, esperarán a la Virgen Dolorosa del paso de las Lamentaciones, donde le realizarán la Reverencia y la acompañarán hasta el Pósito, incorporándose a la comitiva, en la esquina de la calle Pasos, el Cristo del Ecce-Homo, que viene de la Parroquia de San Juan.

Four images are carried out on this day: “Jesús Prendido” (Jesus Arrested) and “Cristo de la Sentencia” (Sentenced Christ), who comes from the Major Church of Santiago, after the celebration of the brotherhood’s Holy Mass, and going to the “Real Pósito” (Brotherhoods’ General Headquarters); then, when he arrives at the Arch of San Roque, they wait for the “Virgen Dolorosa” (Virgin Mary of Sorrows), from the “Lamentaciones” (Lamentations) group of images, and to whom they offer their Reverences; then, altogether continue their way to Brotherhoods’ General Headquarters. Finally, the image of “Ecce- Homo” joins them on Pasos Street, as he comes from the Church of San Juan.

1521 es la fecha de partida de esta procesión tan entrañable. El domingo comienza con la Procesión de Las Palmas, la chiquillería es la dueña de la mañana, todo el mundo estrena, las fotos con el Señor es la atracción. Jesús recita la profecía de la destrucción de Jerusalén “no quedará piedra sobre piedra en pie”, con sus Apóstoles entra en Jumilla.

This popular procession was first celebrated in 1521. Procession of Palms is the main act of Palm Sunday: children are the protagonists of this morning; everybody wears new clothes, everyone wants to have a picture with Jesus riding upon his donkey, when he enters into Jumilla with his apostles while reciting a prophecy over the destruction of Jerusalem, stating: “not one stone will be left standing upon another…” in verse the prophecy of the destruction of Jerusalem. It dates back from 1521.

La tarde es dueña del Cristo Amarrado a la Columna que baja del Monasterio un año más, desde 1886. El padre Guardián lo despide en Santa Ana, la gente se lo arrebata y lo baja a la ciudad, por riguroso turno de anderos. Toda Jumilla se acerca a la ermita de San Agustín a recibir a su Cristo. Autoridades, clero y pueblo lo trasladan a la Parroquia Mayor de Santiago.

In the evening, the protagonist is the “Cristo Amarrado a la Columna” (Christ tied to the flagellation column), who is carried from the Santa Ana Monastery, as every year since 1886. The guardian of the convent says goodbye to him, and then everybody wants to carry him over their shoulders, to the town. All the people in Jumilla attends San Agustin Hermitage to cheer “their” Christ. Authorities, clericals and people take him to the Major Church of Santiago.

Por la mañana

Se traslada al Cristo Amarrado a la Columna desde la iglesia de Santiago a la sede de la Hermandad, para situarlo en el trono, donde participará en las procesiones de la Amargura y del Calvario, pero es un traslado especial, pues los acompañantes son los niños de Jumilla, que con sus madres y guarderías acompañan a la imagen hasta la Casa de Hermandad.

The “Cristo Amarrado a la Columna” (Chrsit tied to the flagellation column) is carried out from the Major Church of Santiago to the headquarters of his brotherhood, so as to prepare the image for the processions of “La Amargura” and “El Calvario”. This is very special, as people who go with the image are only children from the Jumilla primary schools with their teachers and families.

Por la tarde

Desde el Monasterio de Santa Ana se baja en romería al Santísimo Cristo de la Reja, donde la Hermandad de la Caída protagoniza el traslado, con los niños de su Hermandad y todo aquel que lo quiera acompañar. Momento importante es cuando el Cristo llega a San Agustín y los niños encienden sus antorchas para conducirlo por las calles de Jumilla hasta la iglesia de San Juan Bautista.

The “Santísimo Cristo de la Reja” (Christ on the fence) is carried out from the Santa Ana Monastery by people pertaining to “Cristo de la Caída” Brotherhood, especially by children. When it reaches San Agustin Hermitage, children light their torches for the last route through the streets of Jumilla to Church of San Juan.

en el corazón del Barrio de San Antón, con inicio en el Convento de San José, de las Hermanas de la Caridad y la Providencia y finalización en la Capilla del Asilo. Nazarenos y fieles podrán, teniendo como Mediadora a Nuestra Señora de los Dolores del Calvario, recibir las promesas, bendiciones y beneficios del Santo Rosario además de realizar y cumplir ellos mismos las promesas, y agradecer favores concedidos, a Cristo nuestro Redentor. Procesión donde el Espíritu Religioso quedará reflejado en Rezos, Oraciones y Cantos.

Recently created, this procession will walk through the streets of the Neighborhood of San Anton, leaving from the Convent of San José and ending up on the Chapel of the local Nursing Home. Both nazarenes and parishioners will be able to receive the promises, blessings and benefits of the Holy Rosary, as well as carrying out and meeting these promises by themselves, giving thanks for the favours granted to Our Redeemer Christ, with the mediation of our Mother, Virgin Mary of Sorrows on the Calvary.The religious spirit of this procession will be reflected on prays and chants.

La excepción de las procesiones de Jumilla se hace realidad esa noche. Resuenan en nuestros oídos el sordo redoble del tambor y el tintineo de las cadenas de los penitentes. En nuestras retinas se fijan y conservan el calor de las hogueras que dan luz al Cristo de la Vida y a Ntra. Sra. de la Esperanza, a su paso por las estrechas calles que cobijan a nuestra Parroquia Mayor.

On Tuesday night the Holy Week, the most different procession takes place. In an atmosphere of silence, we can only hear the deaf beat of drums and the tinkling of penitent’s chains. Our eyes get fixed upon the lights of bonfires, reflecting on our “Cristo de la Vida” and “Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza”, as they walk along the narrow streets around the Major Church of Santiago.

Procesión de Jesús PrendidoProcession of “Jesús Prendido” (The Arrest of Jesus) Siglo XIX | 19th Century

Con más de siglo y medio de historia sale la procesión, desde las mismas puertas de la antigua Ermita de la Virgen del Loreto, hoy iglesia de El Salvador, de estilo barroco murciano. La Samaritana murciana inicia el recorrido con el resplandor de sus tulipas, en el Huerto de Getsemaní donde prenden a Jesús, antes de ser negado por San Pedro, la primera espada se clava en el pecho de la Virgen.

This procession, with a history of more than half a century, leaves from the ancient doors of “Virgen del Loreto” Hermitage, now Church of el Salvador, of Murcian Baroque style. “La Samaritana” (the Samaritan woman) opens the procession by representing with its bright lights the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus is arrested, just before the Denial of Saint Peter, on this night, we reminisce how Virgin Mary’s suffering start.

Por la tarde no podemos dejar de ir a la Plaza de Arriba, a ver y escuchar El Prendimiento, obra en verso de mediados del siglo XIX que el pueblo ha hecho suyo. Representado por actores de la localidad. La gente se lo sabe de memoria, pero año tras año, poderoso imán que nos llama y nos retiene en la Plaza, “¡Mundo, atención...!”, comienza Lucifer en su tentador parlamento a Jesús.

On Wednesday the Holy Week, everybody should attend to the representation of “El Prendimiento” (The Arrest of Jesus), in the “Plaza de Arriba”. This is a play in verse, dated on the XIXth century. This is normally performed by local actors; people enjoy it year by year, and even learn it by heart. “World, attention: …!”, this is how this play starts with Lucifer’s tempting speech to Jesus…

Visita a los Monumentos “Las Manolas”Visit the Sacred Monuments, “The Manolas”Siglo XIX | 19th Century

Por la tarde, las hermandades con sus nazarenos vestidos con la túnica de la cofradía, sin capuz, acompañan a novias, mujeres y amigas, vestidas con mantilla y teja, a visitar los monumentos de las distintas iglesias de Jumilla. La música del maestro Julián Santos nos envuelven, una y otra vez con “las mantillas del Jueves Santo”.

On Thursday evening the Holy Week, nazarenes wearing their tunics with no hoods, and together with their girlfriends, wives or friends, beautifully dressed on black elegant suits and their typical “teja” and “mantilla”, visit the monuments in the several churches in Jumilla. Music is also the protagonist, with Julian Santos’ unforgettable sound of “Mantillas de Jueves Santo” surrounding us.

Es la procesión más antigua de Jumilla, seis siglos de andadura por nuestras calles, fundada por el santo valenciano San Vicente Ferrer. El corazón de Jumilla está al raso, la fe se despierta, la señal de la cruz nos santigua, el respeto y la devoción nos pone en pie, al paso del Cristo Amarrado a la Columna. El incienso se adueña del ambiente, la Virgen de la Amargura cierra la procesión.

This is the most ancient procession, with six centuries of history and funded by the Dominican Saint Vicente Ferrer. The heart of Jumilla goes out to the streets, within an atmosphere of faith and respect to all the images, especially to our “Cristo Amarrado a la Columna” (Christ tied to the Column); people stands up as he passes in front of them, showing their devotion, also to the “Virgen the la Amargura” (Virgin of Sorrow), surrounded by the scent of incense.

Bullicioso y luminoso despierta el Viernes Santo. La formación en la Parroquia de El Salvador. La catequesis se hace larga, la pasión de Cristo desfila hasta su muerte con El Cristo de la Salud, por fin se hace visible a la salida de su parroquia, un año sin ver la luz, los nazarenos traspasan el umbral de la puerta y lo dejan descansar junto a ella para su contemplación, orgullo y admiración del semanasantero expectante.

This is a bustling and shinning morning on Friday the Holy Week. Point of departure is El Salvador Church. All the images representing the Passion of Christ leave for a long procession, until our “Cristo de la Salud” (Christ of Health) appears on the threshold of the church, after one year of expectations. Nazarenes show this impressive image with proud and admiration to all Semana Santa lovers.

“After being condemned to death, Jesus stayed in the hands of the governor’s soldiers, who took Him to the praetorium and, once the troop gathered, they mocked Him. When the time came, they took off the scarlet robe they had put Him for the mocking, put His own cloths on Him, charged Him with the Cross with which He was expected to die in, and then, they carried out the road to Calvary, where He would die in the Cross.”

La noche se hace recogimiento y seriedad procesional. Los tronos se aglutinan alrededor de lo que fuera la primera iglesia de la Jumilla actual, los rostros de los nazarenos se cubren con el capuz, los anderos comienzan orgullosos su trabajo religioso, sus hombros soportan el sagrado peso de su devoción, el trono no pesa, su caminar se hace firme y majestuoso, la noche tan esperada se hace realidad.

On Friday night, it becomes the most serious and faithful procession. Thrones meet around what was the first church built in Jumilla; nazarenes cover their faces with hoods; those who carry the images over their shoulders begin their mission with proud and devotion, forgetting thus its weight, firmly and stately moving along on the most eagerly-awaited night.

Al pie de la cruz estaba la Madre, que recibió en sus brazos y puso en su regazo maternal el cuerpo sin vida de su Hijo.”

Una de las más reciente de las procesiones jumillanas, trata de recuperar el diseño de túnicas antiguas del siglo XIX, la seriedad y religiosidad de antiguas procesiones. Parte de la Parroquia Mayor de Santiago y tiene como destino la Ermita de San Roque. Una parte andaluza, sevillana y costalera; otra castellana, franciscana y austera. Tres tronos para una procesión con importante participación de la mujer.

One of the most recent of all processions in Jumilla, tending to recover some ancient tunics from the XIXth century, as well the seriousness and religiosity of those primitive processions. It leaves from Major Church of Santiago and finishes at San Roque Hermitage. On the one hand, this is Andalusian and Sevillian; on the other hand, this is Castilian, Franciscan and austere. Only three thrones participate on this procession, which has an important female participation.

Procesión de Jesús Resucitado Procession of “Jesús Resucitado” (Jesus Resurrected)Siglo XX | 20th Century

La procesión se hace fiesta y se traslada a la calle, los alegres pasodobles llaman a la procesión. Momento importante es el Encuentro, entre Jesús y la Virgen, mientras los Armaos, realizan el Caracol. Como colofón de luz y color está “la Caramelada”, auténtica batalla de caramelos que enzarzan a nazarenos y vecinos, como desahogo final de tanto esfuerzo y trabajo desarrollado durante todo un año.

This procession brings the feast to the streets. The music of pasodobles cheers us to attend the procession. After “The Encounter”, procession leaves from “El Rollo” square, with a street full of people celebrating Jesus Resurrection. Finally, color and joy flood the streets in the popular “Caramelada”, a battle of candies between people and nazarenes, to celebrate their relief after so much work and so many efforts during a whole year.
