Holiness and the Human Family Family life is always a little messy and always a little miraculous. We look at certain families and think

how ideal they are in their behavior, their way of life, and their commitment to holiness. We are looking

from a distance. Up close, every family is human.

The truth is that there is always in every life, some work-related problem, or social disappointment, or

deep sorrow. There is always a need for some kind of repair in relationships. There is always a bit of

craziness that requires coping and persistence. There is always the misunderstanding that comes from

miscommunication.

Today we look at the Holy Family. We imagine the panic of losing a child in a big city. We know that

the mother who stands in awe of her child’s knowledge and ability will stand in anguish at the foot of a

gruesome cross. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph lived fully human lives.

The gospel begins with the words: Each year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of

Passover. They went to fulfill their religious obligation, no matter how inconvenient. Perhaps we look

at the young family in the pew in front of us. We see the parents labor to keep the children fairly quiet.

We see the big sister pinch the little brother, and maybe we think they should have stayed home.

Holiness is found in that pew. The inconvenience is accepted because there is a commitment to holiness.

This feast day is given to us to remind us that all human families have problems, issues, and obstacles.

We are also reminded that we are to look at all of these moments of complexity and confusion and reach

for the holiness that is at the core of every sorrow and every happiness. Holy families are holy because

they make an effort.

Santidad y la Familia Humana

La vida familiar siempre es un poco desordenada y siempre un poco milagrosa. Miramos a ciertas

familias y pensamos cuán ideales son en su comportamiento, su forma de vida y su compromiso con la

santidad. Estamos mirando desde la distancia. De cerca, cada familia es humana.

La verdad es que siempre hay en cada vida, algún problema relacionado con el trabajo, o desilusión

social o profunda tristeza. Siempre hay una necesidad de algún tipo de reparación en las relaciones.

Siempre hay un poco de locura que requiere afrontamiento y persistencia. Siempre existe el

malentendido que viene de la falta de comunicación.

Hoy nos fijamos en la Sagrada Familia. Nos imaginamos el pánico de perder a un niño en una gran

ciudad. Sabemos que la madre que siente asombro ante el conocimiento y la capacidad de su hijo se

mantendrá angustiada al pie de una cruz espantosa. Jesús, María y José vivieron vidas completamente

humanas.

El evangelio comienza con las palabras: Cada año, los padres de Jesús fueron a Jerusalén para la

fiesta de la Pascua. Fueron a cumplir su obligación religiosa, por difícil que fuera. Quizás miremos a

la joven familia en la banca frente a nosotros. Vemos a los padres trabajar para mantener a los niños

bastante tranquilos. Vemos a la hermana mayor pellizcar al hermano pequeño, y tal vez pensamos que

deberían haberse quedado en casa. La santidad se encuentra en ese banco. El inconveniente es aceptado

porque hay un compromiso con la santidad.

Esta fiesta se nos da para recordarnos que todas las familias humanas tienen problemas, dificultades y

obstáculos. También se nos recuerda que debemos mirar todos estos momentos de complejidad y

confusión y buscar la santidad que está en el centro de cada dolor y cada felicidad. Las santas familias

son santas porque hacen un esfuerzo. Fr. Hernan Cely
