WELCOME FRIENDS & VISITORS

TO OUR EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION

FROM FATHER CHUCK’S DESK The final days of Advent are here. There is just a day or two of this holy season to complete the preparation of

our hearts and minds to celebrate and receive our Lord Jesus Christ. In the world around us people (maybe includ-ing you!) are stressing over those last minute gifts that need to be purchased or are supposed to have arrived. Per-haps there are food preparations that need to get done. And then there’s the housecleaning for those Christmas guests to complete. These are all important and good things for the season, but they ought not overshadow the es-sential readiness to which we are called in our hearts. That is the ability to sing without the music, to joyfully gather with no feast and no gifts, and simply to proclaim the story of the birth of the Lord Jesus and the extravagant love that is revealed through His birth, life, suffering, death and resurrection. No matter what we don’t have, we always can stand in the midst of this story and make sense of our lives. For the readiness to which we are called is not about getting to heaven, it is about living that incredible love in our own lives now, in big & small ways and in every way, not out of obligation or to get a reward but out of pure gratitude and the desire to love as we are loved. Advent reflection and wandering brings us to Christmas joy & wondering!

I want to thank our parish staff and volunteers who work extra hard to help bring our parish into the Christmas Season. Like any home, there are additional things that need to get done this time of year and all is readied without a lot of fanfare. I especially want to acknowledge Oscar and Sergio, our wonderful maintenance team, who along with volunteers like Cuu, Tim, Stephen, Gonzalo, Baldemar, Susan and so many others, create and keep a beautiful environment in which all of us may worship, from Advent through feast days and into the Christmas Season. Thank you, one and all, for everything you do!

This year we are adding a Mass with a children’s focus at 4:00 PM on Christmas Eve. Amy and Lori, along with Tammie’s and our religion teachers’ support, have been teaching our children songs. We will have teen lectors & other assistants. As our first attempt, it is a bit unpredictable as to attendance numbers, so we will plan to have an overflow Mass just in case the church gets too full. With an old church building we must be mindful of safety. Once the church gets full, others will be directed to Righini Hall for a Mass that will start at 4:15 PM. IF NECESSARY.

The last Mass on Christmas Eve will be at 10:00 PM, celebrated by Bishop Calvo. It will be preceded by “Lessons & Carols”, which will include the proclamation of various readings from Sacred Scripture interspersed among Christmas carols by our small, but lovely four-part choir. That will begin just after 9:00 PM. With the coming of vigil Masses that begin after 4:00 PM, such as we have on Christmas Eve, we no longer have a “Midnight Mass.” Midnight Mass was celebrated because at one time the first Christmas Mass allowed was at midnight, considered the beginning of Christmas. Vigil Masses recognize the very ancient tradition, connected to the Jewish roots of Christi-anity, that a holy day begins at sundown before the morning that follows.

The midnight Mass I have celebrated every year since my ordination is on New Year’s Eve because midnight begins the new year in our world. St. Pope John Paul II called for New Year’s Day to be a day of prayer for peace. I can’t think of a better way to begin our new year than around the tables of the Word and the Eucharist in the Mass. If you can stay up that late, mark your calendars and bring your family and friends. Perhaps we will also have a simple potluck of snacks in Righini Hall following the Mass.

Please remember to give yourself extra time for the Christmas Masses, in the parking lot and in the church. We make room for all who come, even if, and perhaps especially if, it is the one time of year they may come to Mass. We do not know the individual story of any who may come, and we are called to offer the Lord’s hospitality to all – even if they are sitting in “your” seat!

May the Lord bless all of you with a glorious and spirited Christmas Season. If you are travelling away from the parish, may your journeys be safe and calm and your time with family or friends good. If you are visiting our parish family, may your time here also be good and filled with the joy of the Lord!

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PADRE CHUCK Los últimos días de Adviento están aquí. Sólo nos quedan uno o dos días de Adviento para preparar nuestro

corazón y mente para celebrar y recibir a nuestro Señor Jesucristo. En el mundo hay gente (tal vez usted) que se están estresando sobre la compra de regalos de último minuto o que se supone ya tendrían que haber llegado. Tal vez aún hay preparaciones y organización que hacer para la cena de navidad. Y luego está el limpiar la casa para los huéspedes. Todas estas son cosas importantes, pero estas no deben oscurecer el llamado de preparar nuestros corazones. Significa tener la capacidad de cantar sin música, de congregarse alegremente sin banquete y sin rega-los y simplemente de proclamar la historia del nacimiento Jesús y el amor extravagante que se revela a través de su nacimiento, vida, sufrimiento, muerte y resurrección. No importa lo que nos pueda faltar, siempre podemos estar en medio de esta historia y dar sentido a nuestras vidas. Pues la preparación a la que se nos llama no se trata de ir al cielo, se trata de vivir ese amor increíble en nuestras vidas, ahora, en grandes y pequeñas maneras y en todos los sentidos, no por obligación o para obtener una recompensa, sino por gratitud y el deseo de amar porque somos amados. ¡La reflexión de Adviento y el ajetreo nos llevan a la alegría y gozo navideño!

Quiero agradecer al personal de la parroquia y voluntarios que trabajan arduamente preparando nuestra parro-quia para la temporada navideña. Como cualquier casa, hay tareas adicionales que necesitan hacerse en esta épo-ca del año y todo se prepara desapercibidamente. Quiero agradecer especialmente a Oscar y a Sergio, nuestro ma-ravilloso equipo de mantenimiento, que junto con voluntarios como Cuu, Tim, Stephen, Gonzalo, Baldemar, Susan y tantos otros, crean y guardan un bello ambiente en el que todos podemos adorar, desde el Adviento y los días festi-vos hasta la temporada navideña. ¡Gracias, cada uno de ustedes por lo que hacen!

Este año tendremos una Misa con enfoque para los niños en la víspera de la navidad a las 4:00 PM. Amy y Lori, junto con el apoyo de Tammie y nuestros catequistas que han estado enseñando a nuestros estudiantes cantos na-videños. Tendremos lectores adolescentes y otros asistentes. Como este es nuestro primer intento a una Misa para niños, es un poco impredecible saber cuántas personas asistirán y para no poner en juego la seguridad, estamos planeando una Misa adicional en el salón parroquial. Una vez que la iglesia se llene, las personas serán dirigidas al Righini Hall para un Misa que comenzará a las 4:15 PM. SOLO SI ES NECESARIO.

La última Misa de Nochebuena será a las 10:00 PM y será celebrada por el Señor Obispo Calvo. Será precedi-do por "lecciones y villancicos", que incluirá la proclamación de varias lecturas de la Sagrada Escritura intercaladas entre villancicos navideños por nuestro pequeño, pero encantador coro de cuatro personas. Eso comenzará justo después de 9:00 PM. Con la celebración de la Misas de vigilia que comienzan después de 4:00 PM, ya no tendre-mos "Misa de Gallo". La Misa de Gallo era celebrada porque en un tiempo, la primera Misa de Navidad permitida era a la medianoche, considerada el comienzo de la Navidad. Las Misas de vigilia reconocen la tradición muy anti-gua, conectada a las raíces judías del cristianismo, que un día santo comienza al atardecer antes de la mañana que sigue.

La Misa que he celebrado cada año a la medianoche, desde mi ordenación, es en la Misa de víspera del Año Nuevo, porque a la medianoche comienza el nuevo año en nuestro mundo. El Papa Juan Pablo II pidió que el Día de Año Nuevo fuese un día de oración por la paz. No puedo pensar en una mejor manera de comenzar nuestro año que alrededor de la Mesa Eucarística, de la Palabra de Dios y la Eucaristía. Si usted puede permanecer despierto hasta tan tarde, marque sus calendarios y traiga a su familia y amigos. Tal vez también tengamos un simple convi-vio comunitario con aperitivos en Righini Hall después de la Misa.

Por favor, recuerde darse tiempo extra cuando venga a Misa, tanto para estacionarse como para buscar asiento en la iglesia. Debemos hacer espacio para todos, aun para las personas que posiblemente sea la única época del año en la que pueden asistir a Misa. No conocemos la historia individual de quien puede venir y estamos llamados a ofrecer la hospitalidad del Señor a todos, incluso si están sentados en "su" asiento favorito. �

Que el Señor los bendiga con una gloriosa y enérgica temporada navideña. Si viaja lejos de la parroquia, que su viaje sea seguro y tranquilo, al igual que su tiempo con la familia y seres queridos. ¡Si usted está visitando nues-tra parroquia, que su estancia aquí también sea placentera y llena de la alegría del Señor!
