La homeostasis fue descubierta por Claude Bernard en el siglo XIX, pero el término homeostasis fue acuñado por el biólogo Walter B. Cannon (1871-1945), que recibió el Premio Nobel por definir en 1928 las características que rigen la homeostasis que son:
