Are either feminine or masculine
Most nouns ending in “a” or “ad” are feminine
Most nouns ending in “o” or “e” are masculine
Of course there are PLENTY of exceptions ( see pg. 17-19 Spanish Demystified

Add -s when the noun ends in a vowel: casa/casas
Add -es when the noun ends in a consonant that is not “z”. If it ends in “z”, drop the “z” and add a “-ces”
