    Springville Cadet Squadron Blue

    Sky Riders traveled to Wetumpka

    Airport. The cadets came prepared

    for Glider operations, thus the

    tennis shoes and no hats.

The tow plane (the only plane in

    the Alabama Wing currently

equipped with a tow hook) had

    engine trouble and glider flights

    had to be cancelled. However,

through the quick thinking of Capt.

Locke and the support of Capt.

    Swenson from Auburn, we were

    able to provide powered

    orientation flights and save the

    day.

    Capt. Locke contacted Capt.

    Swenson and informed him about

the situation. With the day quickly

    slipping away, Capt, Swenson

    immediately flew from Auburn to

Wetumpka, and within an houroperations were airborne

    providing powered flights for our

    cadets.

    Special Thanks to:

Capt Jim Locke, glider pilot and AL

    hirteen Cadetsexperienced thethrill of aviation,

    with their firstorientation flights with

the Civil Air Patrol atNortheast RegionalAirport on Saturday,February 8, 2014.Youth from SpringvilleCadet Squadron,Gadsden CompositeSquadron, andCullman CompositeSquadron flew a

    combined 13 hours inCAP’s sophisticatedCessna 182’s.

Cadets each took partin hour-long flightsfrom Gadsden insingle-engine Cessnaaircraft

which introducedthem to the sciencethat makes flightpossible. They learnedabout navigation, weather, aircraftinstruments, flightmaneuvers, and more.

The cadets werepaired in teams andbegan by helping topre-flight the aircraft.Pilots taxied eachaircraft ontoNortheastern RegionalAirport’s runway, gaveit full throttle andtook off, climbing to3,000 feet. While aloft,it was the cadets whohandled the controls, during the non-criticalstages of the flight.Once they reachedtheir assignedaltitude, the cadets

navigated toneighboringairports inScottsborro, Talledega,Guntersville, orAlbertville, where theymade a brief stop. Then it was theirpartner’s turn at thecontrols for the flighthome.

Cadets enjoyed a pizzalunch before learningabout airport and pilotpre-flight operationsfrom certified Ground

Cadets also learnedhow pilots must behealthy, drug-free,and alert.

Pilots fromBirmingham andCullman volunteeredtheir time for the

flights, while the CivilAir Patrol provided theaircraft and fuel, at nocost to cadets or thepilots.

Thank you to pilots, parents, and everyonewho helped to make

    the o-flight day asuccess.

    The 2014 Annual

    Alabama Wing Cadet

    Conference was held at

    Maxwell Air Force Base in

Montgomery, AL on the10-12 of January. The

    Conference was a training

    event to help Cadets learn

in all of the core areas of

    the Civil Air Patrol.

    Classes at the conference

    were separated into

    different groups forAirmen, NCOs, and

Officers. As a Chief, I was

    admitted into the class for

    the Officers.

    Our first class was in

    Creative Thinking, which

    was taught by Cadet Lt.

Col. Ben Shea. The classwas about thinking

    outside the box to find

    solutions. One example

    that he used was about

    the man who invented

    Braille, and who got the

    idea from a pinecone.

He also taught a class on

    how to be a Cadet

    Commander and select

    your staff.

    We had several guest

    speakers during the

    weekend. Our first

    speaker was Dr. Jamie

    Demick, who was a

    former NASSA engineer.

    She talked to us about

    projects at NASSA and

    working hard to achieveour goals.

    Our next guest speaker

    was Lt. Col. Sam Bernard

who was there to teach a

    Critical Incident Stress

Management class andtook time to come and

    speak to us about Suicide

    Prevention. Lt. Col.

    Bernard told us what we

    should do in the event

    that someone we know is

    thinking about suicide. He

    also acted out a scenario

    with us for practice.

    We had a Drug Demand

    Reduction class that was

    taught by Capt. Gloria

    Carnes. She spoke about

    the side effects of

drinking. To show theeffects, Capt. Carnes let

    us wear “drunk goggles”

and try to walk a straight

    line. The class was not

    only interesting, but also

    fun!

    The Aerospace

presentation was taughtby Maj. Melissa Lewis who

    brought a hovercraft and

    several cadets had the

    opportunity to ride it.

    Saturday evening after

    classes we had an Award

    Ceremony and Banquet.

    Two Alabama Cadets;Catherine Guthrie, and

    Austin Holliman were

    promoted to Cadet

    Colonel and received their

    Spaatz Award. Cadet

    Colonel is the highest rank

    a cadet can receive. We

    enjoyed honoring them

    and celebrating theirachievement with them.

    The Cadet Conference

    was a great learning

    opportunity and a great

    way to meet new friends.

I really enjoyed it and plan

    to attend again next year.

Springville Cadets havefound out how fun it canbe to help out at theSouthern Museum ofFlight! In 2013Springville CadetSquadron began a

partnership with theflight museum to helpaccomplish many of themuseum’s plannedprojects.

AL126 cadets have sinceadopted the F86D Saber

jet that many of us old-

timers remember as the“Banks High School jet” as their own specialproject. Cadets havecommitted to keepingthe North American“Saber Dog” fighter intip-top shape byregularly washing theKorean War intercepter

jet and others for themuseum. In the springthe jet is scheduled to berepainted, and AL126Cadets are lookingforward to helping.

On January 25 theweather was cold andrainy, yet AL126 Cadetsshowed up ready andeager to work at theSouthern Museum ofFlight. Cadets helpedmuseum displaymanager Zachary Edisonto get one of the showrooms ready for a newdisplay by movingdisplay cases whichwere no longer needed.

    They moved aircraft

inside the displayhanger, and helpedready a helicopter forrepair.

Thank you to all Cadetsand Parents who havevolunteered your time tothe Southern Museum ofFlight.

The next volunteer dateis 22 February, everyoneis invited to help.
