La subduccin de placas es un proceso de hundimiento de unaplaca litosfricabajo otra en unlmite

convergente, segn la teora detectnica de placas.1La subduccin ocurre a lo largo de amplias zonas

de subduccin que en el presente se concentran en las costas delocano Pacficoen el

llamadocinturn de fuego del Pacficopero tambin hay zonas de subduccin en partes delMar

Mediterrneo, lasAntillas, lasAntillas del Sury la costa ndica deIndonesia.

La subduccin provoca recurrentesterremotos1de gran magnitud los cuales se originan en la zona de

Benioff. La subducin tambin causa lafusin parcialdeparte del manto terrestregenerando magma

que asciende dando lugar avolcanesyplutones.

La causa de la subduccin es la diferencia de densidad entre la litsferaocenica, de mayordensidad,

la que subduce bajo la litsfera continental, menos densa.[cita requerida]

La formacin de algunos volcanes,montaas, islas yfosas ocenicasestn relacionadas con los

procesos de subduccin,deriva continentalyorognesis.

Magmatismo

Dado que la temperatura (hasta ms de 1.000 gradosCelsius) y la presin

aumentan con la profundidad, a una profundidad de 100 kilmetros una parte de

los materiales de la placa en subduccin son liberados (en especial el agua) lo que

conlleva la fusin delmantosuprayacente, que a su vez, asciende a travs de

lacorteza terrestrecontinental creandovolcanes.Las zonas de subduccin constituyen una parte muy importante dentro de la

dinmica de los materiales terrestres. Los materiales subducidos han cambiado

posiblemente las propiedades del manto, y han permitido que laconveccinse

mantenga. Sismolgicamente las zonas de subduccin son caracterizadas por

laszonas de Benioff.

El ngulo de subduccin, el ngulo que forma el plano de lazona de Benioffcon la

superficie terrestre es muy importante para las caractersticas de la zona de

subduccin: se refleja en el volcanismo, la orogenesis y los sismos asociados a la

zona de subduccin. Uno de los factores principales que modulan el ngulo de

subduccin es la densidad de lalitsferaocenica y la densidad; a su vez, est

muy relacionada con la edad de lacorteza ocenicade manera que las zonas de

subduccin con corteza ocenica ms antigua tambin tienen la ms densa y por

lo tanto un ngulo de subduccin mayor.

Subduccin subhorizontal (70): ocurre en zonas de subduccin dondelacortezaylitsferaocenica son viejas y gruesas y se ha mermado su capacidad de

flote. Tambien cuando sufre demasiada presion para soportarlo. En el presente la

zona de subduccin ms empinada es la de lasislas Marianasdonde esto se

manifiesta en lafosa de las Marianasque es la ms profunda de la Tierra. La corteza

ocenica que esta en camino a ser subducida en la fosa de las Marianas es la corteza

ocenica ms antigua de la Tierra sin contarofiolitas. La subduccin empinada esta

asociada a extensin deretroarco,2provocando la migracin de corteza de los arcos

volcnicos y fragmentos de corteza continetal dejando atrs unmar marginal.
